One of my personal headcanons is that Nina didn't even actually DEFEAT Sanae in conventional danmaku combat. She just told her the moon landing is fake and that the Earth is flat and Sanae got so riled up and sad that she left and went home and told Marisa that Nina is dangerous.

No 2hu does. Their individuality is centered on their accessories and clothes.
There's that one image of all the blonde 2hus in a hot spring with no clothes and accessories to differentiate them and it's quite hard to actually tell some of them apart. The artist throws you a bone by having some of them use their abilities or sit next to 2hus they're known to be friends with, but if you took that away too, it'd be extremely hard to tell them apart.

I guess it depends on how you draw her. Giving her the ahoge would make it easy to tell who it is if you're just looking at a silhouette of her. Making her hold her gohei would help the most.

She went up 1 place this year, didn't she? To be honest, Sanae's placing in the vote is always the one I'm least interested in, because she just hops around 2 or 3 places like everyone else in that bracket. The characters that get less votes are the most interesting to look at.
Though I do enjoy seeing the comments every year. There's lots of dedicated fans there, and some people even post personal stories relating to how that character helped them.

I initially didn't like her or even understand why anyone did, but then I played her in LoLK, just for the sake of completion, and got to stage 4. I already liked Sagume, but her interactions with Sanae really made me properly appreciate both characters. It's kind of funny, since she's the second 2hu I now really like, but initially didn't until I playing her in a game.

It was her popular girl energy and autism that drew me in. She's such a sunny girl it's impossible not to love her, and at the same time I love her boasts and gloating - her boldness and self-assuredness (especially when she oversteps, and is completely socially unaware of how dorky it is). I love Sanae and all, but how did she get so popular in the past half year or so? I'm a little frustrated that my favorite Touhou no longer gets nearly as much attention, nobody wants to talk about her anymore.

I didn't want to answer this yesterday since I was drunk, but, here goes:
I actually disliked Sanae at first. I started with the games and was hopping between 6-10 practicing my danmaku skills, and I couldn't get past Sanae because I was a shitter. All my favorites back then were based on looks and Sanae didn't really strike me as an interesting design. I didn't understand why people would like her.
Then I decided to read the omake, I played as her in Touhou 12, I progressively started getting more and more interested in Sanae as a character until she finally usurped the #1 spot and became my favorite.
So that's the how, here's the why:
I enjoy that she's a nerd and that she's very in your face about it. She constantly makes references to games she likes and is very open about being an /m/tard. She's optimistic, positive, contagiously so. Even then she can be a prick and overly competitive and bold. She likes gloating, she's overly confident in herself despite not really being all that powerful, she's willing to tell the goddess of Hell herself that her t-shirt looks like shit and get away with it. She's genuinely a hard worker, someone who not only works hard for herself and her shrine, but also cleans up after her friends. Despite all her competitiveness, she likes helping people. She comes off as a total tone-deaf dork that doesn't realize that people don't really care about the things that interest HER, but is either unaware or doesn't care at all, she simply speaks her mind and ropes in whoever is nearby to listen to her ramble about her interests. She's easily excitable. I like how connected she is to a real life shrine and family. About the only thing I dislike about her, and many other characters, is that ZUN refuses to give her any sort of backstory that's not the most barebones shit ever.
Finally, I feel as if I'm forever stuck with having her as my favorite. Other characters may periodically grip me and be more interesting to me, but I feel as if I can't just decide to not like Sanae anymore. It's a done deal.

The BWS could have been a drone or a manned support fighter, like a G-Fighter that could actively combine during combat. My number 2 is Youmu. I love her design, and the fact that she’s an idiot contrasts so well with her outward appearance.

Best PC-98 is Yumemi, since she’s an ordinary human that manages to be one of the hardest Touhou final bosses ever. Also she’s really hot. A friend of mine also turned me onto Rika with his headcanon that she’s a socially awkward genius who masks her social ineptitude with massive overconfidence in her creations and a cackling supervillain facade. Also I’m convinced that if she ever met Sanae, Sanae would turn her into a mecha fan.

Other standouts for me are Raiko, Minoriko (great wife candidate since she’s adorable and you’ll be eating healthily and heartily), Kogasa, Chimata, Momoyo, Sagume and Yorihime (mainly because moonies look so fucking hot!), and recently Nareko.

What Touhou-related things(games, albums, printworks) would Sanae like?

I feel like she would like MoF, even though she is one of the bosses. It fits her well, it's mostly joyous and a little melancholic and nature-focused. UFO would probably fit her better thematically and emotionally, although it's focused on Buddhism, but I also think she would like MoF's gameplay more. It's a pure Touhou, stripped of any superfluous details and gimmicks, with some creative uses of danmaku towards the end.
As for the albums, I can only imagine her liking TGA the most. It's the most action-packed album, which I'm sure Sanae would enjoy, it has an interesting combination of themes and it's very green. And I don't know how to explain it, but the music sounds like something Sanae would like.
