Up to this day, why is Grimsokyo still more lore-accurate than Cutesokyo? ZUN never left behind the horror element of Touhou.

Youkai still eat outsiders.
Villagers still fear the youkai and are being spied upon.
Reimu still uphold the "status quo" (meaning: youkai run amok and humans can do nothing but endure incidents).
Nothing has changed, really.

The Youkai sages don't want you to know this, but the Youkai women are free. You can just take one home and seal her with a spell you can learn from some old perverted magician.

I just want regular Gensokyo with Grimsokyo aesthetics.

The cold hard truth that neither side wants to admit is that Grimsokyo and Cutesokyo are both bullshit interpretations that sacrifice a lot of nuance for the sake of indulging.
Touhou has both cute slice of life influences and darker mythological influences, but it's so much more than the sum of those two parts. Gensokyo is a beautiful and nostalgic place, one that invokes wonder and fantasy in its tales.

Thankfully, newer studies suggest eradicating mosquitos would have little impact on things. They're far from the only flying insect that matures in the water or serve as pollinators. Plenty of other species would fill the gap.
Sadly, things like wasps and wasp adjacent are the ones you have to keep around. Given they often keep other species in check.

Outside of DiPP getting retconned I don't really feel like Touhou has ever really been sanitized. If anything it's only gotten more serious since the start, given how early Windows was very breezy and inconsequential with characters sharing banter and breaking the fourth wall. Hell, going even further back PC98 was practically an era of Cute'em Ups.
