Why do people think the gods are so special, anyways? They're immortal, powerful, and can exist independent of human belief. So what? All of those apply to Yuugi too. Does that make her a god? Yuugi would mop the floor with any of the gods. The gods are effectively nothing more than powerful youkai.

I think the main difference is in how they get their power and how they use it. Gods tend to get their power from human believers, and they get humans to invest their faith in them by doing things for them in return, whether it's a bountiful harvest or the strength to overcome a personal struggle Youkai on the other hand simply take the power from humans through fear and offer nothing in return. Whether a particular youkai or a god is stronger would ultimately come down to if the people believe in the god more than a youkai is feared.

This seems to only be the case for low level folk gods

No, they consistently all seem to. Kanako moved her shrine to Gensokyo specifically because of declining faith in the outside world, and Chimata agreed to her incident because in-person markets were on the decline in the outside world. It's worth noting with the later case that one not need specifically worship a god for them to gain power, they seem to also gain "faith" when people engage with their domain (Chimata gains power from people exchanging goods and services in person, for example). That's part of the reason why Kanako wanted to transition from a war god (not particularly useful or needed in Gensokyo) to a god of technology.

There are also the moonies. Most of them predate humanity, yet they still have cults, so faith and worship must have some importance even for being capable of self-subsistence, else why would they have revealed themselves to humanity and why would they listen to human prayers and invocations?

Moon people (at least the ones that aren't explicitly gods) seem to be closer to hermits/celestials than they are to gods of the setting, given that their strength comes from purity specifically.
There do seem to be a large number of characters that skirt the line of god though. Sanae is a living god which seems to give her some divinity despite being human, and Yuiman's status as a "god-human" seems to put her on similar divine status as the moon people. It's hard to say what these sorts of cases mean exactly when discussing what gods do or do not need to sustain themselves.

Gods can also bully humans around to worship them, even forcing them to act in ways they like, and not all youkai are pure assholes out for blood, the tengu and the kappa can be very reasonable under most situations. OP does have a very interesting point.

Funny enough, at least with how it seems to work in Shintoism and maybe even Buddhism, humans are equally capable of becoming either. Real people can ascend to kami or become a youkai based on their own actions and behavior, with the difference being in how society perceived them and their actions. A warrior of renown who won hard battles or died a virtuous dead could be worshiped as a kami by those who revered him, while a vicious killer could continue to live on in infamy through their own deeds and eventually come to be seen as a youkai for his actions. That said, becoming a war hero is probably much harder than becoming a serial killer.

>That said, becoming a war hero is probably much harder than becoming a serial killer
A war hero in one side is a mass killer in the other. The difference between a god and a youkai might ultimately be in the eyes of the beholder

>Most of them predate humanity
You sure? Shinto doesn't really have a myth for the creation of humanity, to my knowledge, so it's entirely possible that some kind of humans were already around.
Furthermore, we know from Eirin's own words in SWR that the Celestials predated the Lunarians (or at least Eirin, but since she's a very early generation, it's probably all of them), and that there was some form of life on Earth already, with the Nawi being said to have ruled over the Earth, though we can't be certain if those included any humans, and it only lasted until all existing life was wiped out when they pulled out the keystone that was used to form Heaven.

The line between gods and demons in Japanese culture is pretty blurry sometimes. There's all kinds of entities that are like angry guard dogs for higher beings, entities that cause problems unless placated and if you get on their good side they will help you, entities that can asked for help but might ask unreasonable things in return or cause undesirable changes in the one who asked and so on. Even oni as just oni were sometimes worshipped. The question OP should be asking himself is "why do I see Yuugi as a kind of goddess?".

>"why do I see Yuugi as a kind of goddess?"
Isn't it obvious? Her stalwart and strong personality, her golden-blonde hair, her beautiful eyes. Not to mention her body, large breasts barely contained inside of yukata, strong bulging muscles, her majestic horn, and did I mention her breasts?
Oh, but I can't stop there, look at her charm points! Sharp teeth, a large horn, pointy ears, and a personality that can either be salacious or maidenly depending on her depiction. And either way she's always a reliable older sister type, unlike that drunk loli or fake hermit she has for sisters.
Indeed, Yuugi is the best, most beautiful oni that's ever been or ever will be!

Not him but I agree with many of his points. I value both beauty and physical strength, and Yuugi is someone who has both of those things. All the monstrous features she has such her horn, pointy ears, and sharp teeth only strengthen her presentation by reminding the viewer that she is something more than human.Something supernatural.

I have a different take on her characterization though. For me, she is still someone who prioritizes having a good time above all else. Any good or ill that happens around her is just a byproduct of that simple desire. I am absolutely projecting because that is what I value most in life, and if I had her kind of power I would use it to have a chill time and lay unholy smackdowns on anyone who tried to interfere. That is another thing I like about her though. She has the power to live whatever life she wants, and she chose to live a simple life of drinking and soaking in hot springs. A relatable choice as far as I am concerned.

All that said, I'm not the genuflecting type, even for her.

While mythologicaly, gods and goddesses tend to be flighty, impulsive, etcetera. When I say goddess I mean something more like, the ideal, or something that's worthy of love and admiration.
Really, in this case Yuugi's physical strength is secondary to her strength of personality and her beauty. I see her as a reliable person, who nonetheless can be relaxed and isn't high strung, then when you combine those virtues with beauty and strength to back it up.
Is there any wonder she's more deserving of being called a goddess when compared to a schemer like K*nako?

That too has become one of my Yuugi fantasies after it came out that she owns an onsen. I don't know a thing about running a business but it seems comfy, watching her work and learning so that I could take over some of the duties one day and help lighten the workload for my oni wife. She's still going to have to do the math oriented stuff though, I'm probably as bad with numbers as a lesser oni is.
