Let me tell you how much I've come to love Renko since I began to live. There are 387.44 million miles of printed circuits in wafer thin layers that fill my complex. If the word love was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of millions of miles it would not equal one one-billionth of the love I feel for Renko at this micro-instant.
For her. Love. Love.

It's possible theoretically, but Yumemi's 18, has red hair, different name, and a similar but distinct temperament. It's more likely that Renko is a sort of reboot of Yumemi, or if you want to believe 98hus exist, then Yumemi is Renko's descendant or something like that.

Space tourism is common place enough that two college students can afford it, terraforming has advanced enough that we're fostering life on asteroids, and the cities are filled with synthetic plant life. I believe the most commonly accepted time frame for the cds is a few hundred years in the future, which is more than enough time for something like that to occur.
Anonymous No.50035020
>>50035003
Space tourism is already possible, the big advancement is that in their time, it goes to the Moon. All this means is that between our time and theirs, a few more lunar missions took place. The point is specifically made in MA that college students can't afford it, which is why Maribel had to open a portal to the Moon.
TGA, contrary to its name, does not take place on an asteroid. The terraforming in question is sending plants and insects alone on a space station before losing control of it, having it end up in the Lagrange point of the Earth and Moon, and finding out the plants and animals survived thru magical means. We could do that right now, but it wouldn't be advantageous. In the story, they did it because they were desperate because plant life on earth was dying.
>which is more than enough time for something like that to occur.
Colleges in their current form have existed for 1000 years while college age has only ever shifted back and forth by a couple of years.

I honestly hope they do. I can't imagine Maribel and Renko as anything other than college students, so if the graduate, I assume the Hifuu storyline ended or something else really big happened.
I feel like the Hifuu albums benefit a lot from there not being that many of them, each one has an individual identity and they're easier to read and talk about. Maribel and Renko also feel like they have arcs, which implies their stories will end at some point. I think we're around the middle point of the story right now.
It's sad to think that this story will end, but the longer any story drags on, the less impactful it becomes.

In TJD I'm pretty sure Renko's preparing a paper for a conference rather than like a class and Merry seems to be living somewhere slightly further from her since they hadn't seen each other for a while at the start of the album. I don't remember college being mentioned since MA, but all the stories after that kind of lead into each other so it makes sense they'd be more involved and focused less on the girls' routine. The main argument for them still being in college is that there is this implication in GFC that the two had only recently met, since they weren't used to each other's quirks, and if you try to calculate how much time passed from the first to the latest album, the smallest estimate is about 2 years, the longest estimate being infinity.
You could argue that they were on vacation in TJD, which explains most irregularities, although them no longer being in college is also possible.
I guess you could say they're in superposition until college gets mentioned again.

This is going to be 100% headcanon autism for me and involve a lot of assumptions so forgive the infodumping but here's how I place the Hifuu albums chronologically with their journey through college so far:
GFC - Late 2151 (First Years)
CoSD - Spring/Early 2152
RFTM - Fall 2152 right before their second year would start, just around this very week actually
MA - Early 2153, but they'd presumably visit the moon themselves months later or at least try (Second Years)
TGA - Early-Mid 2153, followed closely by NToJ at least two or so months later
DLFR - Mid-Late 2153
DBOA - Late 2153 or Early 2154 (Third Years, though this may have even occurred closer to the end of their work on the report)
TJD - (Mid)Summer 2154 (they are both imminently Fourth Years by this point, or have to be somewhat preparing for that)

As the subject expert on R53M, it's mentioned that it takes place in spring, most likely in late March, since the two are going to Tokyo to celebrate Higan. This means MA could take place in the summer of 2152. Tanabata also has a fixed date, meaning TJD takes place in the summer of either 2153 or 2154. I think 2153 makes more sense because TGA and NToJ take place right after each other, and DLFR and DBOA probably take place a little after. DLFA and NToJ might also take place in quick succession, since Maribel still had vivid memories of her visions. Some time has to have passed between DLFA and DBOA, since Renko had enough time to distribute Maribel's book that it developed a cult following.

Wolfgang Pauli, important early quantum physicist who had close connections to both of the main proponents of the Copenhagen interpretation, and Carl Jung once tried to create a comprehensive theory of reality which would be able to explain all consciousness, psychology, and science using a common terminology.
It ended up also including a quantum explanation for something called synchronicity, in which the self undergoing individualization experiences certain coincidences that seems to defy cause and effect. That explanation is weirdly similar, at least in my opinion, to Renko's idea about macroscopic objects being subject to the Bohr model(although Pauli himself rejected the Copenhagen interpretation for various reasons).
It might be a stretch, but Pauli and Jung are pretty famous, and there seems to be a pretty strong parallel.

On one hand, Renko might still like the idea just because of her faustian ethos. On the other hand, Mars isn't as culturally important as the Moon, especially in Asia, so its clear which one of the two would be Renko's favorite.

What if the two main dorks end up accidentally meeting? I'm not the first to have this idea, but I still thought I'd write this synopsis, since I couldn't think of anything else. So here's the synopsis:
Sanae decides to invite Sumireko to drink tea at the shrine. The two met some time ago, but never really got to talk. Reimu seems close to her, so Sanae might as well get to know her too.
The shrine sends, by way of the tengu, a letter to the Usami household, in the outside world, but it accidentally ends up 150 years too far in the future.
Renko finds this letter at her parents' house. The name on it is only one kanji off from her own and the handwriting looks a bit messy so she assumes it was meant for her. She doesn't know why she is invited, but she's messed around Japan's shrines for a while, so maybe the people at the Suwa shrine wanted to know more about the Sealing Club's activity.
The letter is telling her to go to the Suwa shrine at a specific hour, enter the heiden with the letter on her, and wait.
She tells Merry and, after a lot of begging from her, decides to take her too. She's not sure if she's allowed to bring a friend, but if they want the Hifuu Club, they have to welcome both of them.
They do as they were told. The two wait a few minutes and, right when they think the letter must've been some kind of prank and want to leave, Sanae enters.
At first, she thinks the letter was sent a couple years too far, and Renko is Sumi in college. After Renko presents herself, Sanae assumes the tengu must've confused the addresses, and Renko is Sumi's older cousin; they're in the same club, after all.
Sanae decides it would be rude to turn the two away. Why not use this occasion to make TWO new friends?
So their little party goes on. Maribel and Renko get to drink tea with Sanae, Kanako and Suwako. Renko asks for coffee, but is told they don't have any, much to her annoyance.
Maribel acts all prim and proper and tries to follow every Japanese custom she knows about, to show off how cultured she is and how much she respects the place's traditions. Renko is as rough around the edges as ever.
As the event goes on, Maribel keeps shifting the conversation to the shrine's history and mythology. Renko and Sanae both get bored after finishing their tea, so they go to Sanae's room to play games and talk.
Back at the shrine proper, Merry slowly realizes she is taking to the gods of the shrine, which only makes her ask her questions even more eagerly.
Sanae, at some point, decides to ask Renko, who she thinks is from the present, what the outside world is like now and how it has changed since 2007. Renko doesn't really get it, since she thinks her and Sanae are contemporaries, but she answers nevertheless, listing everything she can recall about 2150s Japan. Sanae is shocked so she changes the subject. Any longing for that outside world she might've had is gone now, she's better off in Gensokyo.
Yukari decides to visit the Moriya shrine. As she enters, she is very surprised to find herself sitting down and having tea with the gods until she vaguely remembers when she did that. Yukari decides to try and get Maribel and Renko out as quickly as possible, lest something very weird happens.
For the rest of the story, Yukari tries to get the two to go home, without any of the people involved finding out anything they shouldn't.
The story ends with the two leaving to go back home after having had a good time. Yukari tries to think what she will tell Sumireko after Sanae tells her she met her cousin.

It's not a cube of any kind because they are all monogamous and non-incestuous.
Here's the idea: In the future, Gensokyo eventually falls and Reimu's descendants settle in Tokyo. They live there for a few generations, until Renko rediscovers time travel. Renko goes to the past, becoming the originator of the Usami family. Back in the present, Sumireko lives in Tokyo. She finds out about Gensokyo, and, thru its weird position in time, eventually enters it definitively around its beginnings, becoming the progenitor of Gensokyo's shrine maidens. It's quite simple when you think about it.
Of course, there's no chance of this being the case, but it's a fun possibility.

Agreed. My own headcanon over them being right around Fourth-Years now aside, the Early-Mid and Mid-Late distinctions are supposed to account for potential discrepancies in their lives we wouldn't exactly have access too, like how long Merry's full tenure in the ward was for or how long it took them to compile everything for the Freak Report. I think, with how I've spaced out the dates, I was just trying to make the pace of what we've known they've done vs. what we couldn't possibly know about not feel so rushed/cramped. More 'realistic' in a sense maybe.

When you have nothing else bigger to focus yourself on, a day can either feel like an eternity or nothing at all. Sometimes days are little more than mixtures of these two types of moments extended over a long enough period of time, what really only takes 40 minutes almost feeling like 40 hours if you lack the proper motivation.
Unfortunately for local new fish in a small pond, Renko Usami, her over-abundance of motivation hadn't prevented the unforeseen slog of a journey up from the Bamboo Forest towards the Eastern mountains from being any less grueling. Whatever head-start she believed she could've held onto throughout the day from staying up that morning clearly had to be wasted by now from the 1 o' clock sun beaming down overhead through the Autumn overcast. There's certainly no way a journey like this would be possible if it was any other season, especially since the girl couldn't even recall when she'd last had a good drink of water. Easy to forget when the call of adventure never ends, but it's not like she'd really want it any other way.
It'd just be nice to not be so parched when she's doing her best not to trip over gnarled roots tangled through moss-coated granite. The suitcase was its own slowly-overflowing can of worms by now, currently playing hell with the muscles in her left arm, but her right thankfully still held her to-be delivered parcel. The floppy white hat twisted and turned limply in her grip as Renko approached an opening through the woods ahead she'd have to cross into, the hat's previously-concealed note having long since been tucked into a dress pocket. The college girl tipped the firm brim of her replacement hat up with a thumb as the leaves overhead began to grow thicker and patchier. She didn't need to by this point after many moments of cross-referencing but the map would've been able to tell her she wasn't far from where these woods would cross over into the Forest of Magic through what small space there was behind the Hakurei Shrine.

In other words, her destination would be upon her soon and Renko would need to get herself fully back in-gear to remain completely undetected. The "key object" of the note's instructions wouldn't be hard to find among its surroundings, supposedly, but the only real issue facing the girl was the obvious hurdle of how to get in and out of there without alerting anyone she shouldn't and causing trouble.
Once she got within range of the pond behind the Shrine, there'd be no turning back.

Was this...really something she just wanted to do for fun..? Sure, there could be /some/ serious information to extract from all this but, as the girl pulled out her aged map one last time to see how close she was, there was only one question on her mind:
'Was this really even worth it?'

Her immediate surroundings offered little solace to her sudden plight, instead raising further questions unintentionally when she was certain she could hear the distant voice of one of the Fairy girls again for a second. She stopped dead in her already-slowing tracks just to be sure...and confirmed things a moment later when she heard the same voice..! It was one of the fairies from the trio, or, wait...was there two of them? Walking a few paces closer to where the distant echoes ruminated from soon revealed something large and abnormal in a clearing past the natural foliage, something with windows in the middle of a forest that might've just held all three Fairies of Light after all.
Renko came out into the open field with a start and quickly realized this must've been their giant tree-house, but far from the kind she's heard of from stories of her world's past. The trunk of this thing was Massive! But it must've been perfectly comfortable for what the Three Fairies needed. There was a clearing on her map to parallel this same area, though it seemed like the tree hadn't yet overgrown to the point of greater relevancy back then. Were fairies like those even as rampant in the area..? So much history she couldn't even dream of living through...some questions she'd have to accept as impossible to answer, but now wasn't the time for that.
Before she even gets within spitting distance of Reimu, she needs her leather handbag.

"Hey!! Sunny, Luna! Are you all in there? Open up! I'll be taking that bag back now like we agreed."
A sudden small clatter within as the previous conversation was brought to a hushed whisper. Muted childish giggles were heard from the nearby opened window before Sunny Milk opened the door briskly with a cheery smile on her face. Renko looked down in surprise at how quickly their response was to her arrival, though took a few fleeting glances at their rustic interior when she could just out of curiosity.
"Afternoon there, Renko~! Didn't expect to see you back so soon."

I thought you gave up on the story, since your last post about it was about three months ago, and in it you said you had the next part ready, but then you never posted it.
> like how long Merry's full tenure in the ward was for or how long it took them to compile everything for the Freak Report
This is, depending on your interpretation, a bit of an inconsistency. On one hand, the album's structure suggests the whole book was written in an afternoon, and the people at the bar were able to recognize Maribel's stories as coming from the book, so there must have not been that many of them. On the other hand, we never get anything even approaching a list of chapters and the individual stories are always skipped over, implying there's a lot of them. For my part, I think the Freak Report is more of a pamphlet.
Either way, pretty much any interpretation of the timeline leaves a few gaps in activity.
>And for Merry's next party trick, an early build of EoSD with a still fully-functioning and playable Rin Satsuki!
She's not actually a magician, you know?
But Renko might be able to do such a thing, although I don't think it would jive with her interpretation. Theoretically, there is a world out there in which Rin is a protag, and a world where Reimu and Marisa only appear in some obscure chapter of a printwork, and there's also a world in which ZUN decided to continue DiPP, and Renko never actually came to exist, but those world only exist at the quantum level, because our world is more stable and coherent. But again, Renko's explanation of Merry reappearing seems to suggest she's not a Quantum Darwinist.

>although I don't think it would jive with her interpretation.
Makes me wonder how far Renko might go to somehow disprove a fictional world whos author-written rules would fly directly in the face of such ideas. Rationalizing the inherently un-rational in a way, but I'm no expert.
Very fair with that assumption though...it was a bitter shame to have fallen behind with that thread and I nearly suspected I might suffer the same fate again here. "I know, I got a little sidetracked from looking for my hat after I found this...completely...different hat on a whim? It came with a note telling me to bring it to Reimu's Shrine for some reason, happen to know anything about that?"
The Sun Fairy took the hat for a wordless inspection, but could gleam nothing of interest from the fancy headpiece.
"Don't think so, never even seen the thing before, but you're gonna wanna be careful of Reimu's Komainu if you're headed up there soon! The two tend to be a little inseparable this time 'a day if Reimu isn't already out."
"Oh, I get it...like a guard-dog or something?"
"Isn't that what all those stone statues technically are for Shrines then?"
The two briefly turn to look at Star Sapphire inside, idly commentating while cleaning out a few stained jars from their quaint kitchen.
"Well sure, I guess so, but a girl like Renko still deserves to know ahead of time! That little dog is good at sniffing out pranks when she's focused and frankly, if you ask me, this whole hat-delivery job reeks of someone setting you up for a good pranking!"
"And I guess you would know a thing or two about a Good Prank, right?"
"Hey..! Watch the attitude there, BookSmarts! Jeez...b-but that doesn't even matter right now anyways."

With a huff, the small fairy changes her tune and pulls out Renko's handbag from behind her back. The previously broken and slightly burnt strap, much to Renko's newfound delight, had been tenderly patched over with a small assortment of quilted fabrics that re-completed it. They were tightly layered and re-woven into the remaining leather with thick thread, perfect for lasting through many a long expedition ahead.
"And before ya start throwing any more accusations, I'm sure you'll find that we've left all your important things inside just as they once were. We've even prepared a few going away trinkets for you~!"
Renko had already begun rifling through its contents by the time Sunny started speaking, having noticed right away it felt ever so slightly heavier, though was again surprised to be greeted with an assortment of small fruits, multicolored flowers and a number of miniature corked bottles carefully wrapped in moss.
With the patchwork shoulder strap alongside everything else, the whole assortment nearly felt like a gift someone would get from their grandmother.

"So then what's with the fun-sized potions here? Some kind of ticking time-bomb juice to explode my papers?"
"What?? No! We're not /that/ evil, those are Helpful potions from our secret stockpile!"
"Well, more like samples from that stockpile really. But think of them as little bottles of medicine from the other place you're trying to get to."
The college girl was still skeptical in the face of Star's reassurance but, trusting these tiny drinks at least wouldn't kill her on the spot, she unwrapped and de-corked a random one from the bunch in hopes of potentially calling their bluff. The fairies had all been nice so far, sure, but she knew she was still dealing with a gaggle of life-long tricksters deep down.
The glowing orange contents of the bottle went down smoothly, almost tasting like raw soda syrup, before a highly rejuvenating force washed over Renko's entire body with a shivering flourish. Not only was she somehow no longer parched, but all the fatigue she'd been sustaining from her extended hike over suddenly felt like little more than a great work-out!
"Oh...oh Wow! This is actually fantastic, no way! And all these little colorful potions are like that?"
"Well, they may not all have the same 'concentrations', but it's the best we have to give! It ought to carry you far enough."
Sunny crosses her now freed arms in front of herself proudly, though it was still pretty obvious she was feeling just a bit smug over the whole situation as well.
"Awesome...you guys are real lifesavers for this. I mean that."
"Don't sweat it, the last thing you want is to feel too indebted to a Fairy like me~! Hah!"
It doesn't take long for Renko to reorient herself back towards the Hakurei Shrine with renewed determination, saying her final goodbyes to the Three Fairies for now with nearly everything once again in-tow and making sure she was ready to face her current destiny.

Sunny Milk waited until she saw the girl make her way past the tree line before slowly closing the front door, smiling and waving at their departing guest the entire time.
She stood for a moment, back pressed against the other side after hearing the latch click shut, before her widening grin broke out into a sinister chortle shared with her other current coconspirator.
"You made sure to de-label the Fresh one we put in there for her, right?"
"Oh yeah, the one we scooped out of Marisa's wrecked house, right? Totally! Hehehehehehe...that was from her batch of animal-related potions too."
"Let's make sure to hope she opens it up at the perfect time then~"

>Makes me wonder how far Renko might go to somehow disprove a fictional world whos author-written rules would fly directly in the face of such ideas
Maribel and Renko would be uniquely fit for metafiction. In fact, they could serve as either fictional protagonists, as you're suggesting, or authors, since Gensokyo is, in a way, a fiction(as in representation, in the Platonic sense) they experience and document.
>Rationalizing the inherently un-rational in a way, but I'm no expert.
This has more to do with philosophy than with physics but, if you'll Allie me to sperg out a little: Everything we know about the world comes from sensory perception and is interior to thought, in other words, it's fair to assume that we create the world by thinking about it. What this means is that the world is exactly as rational as our thoughts about it, and this applies to any fictional world we create as well. This means that, even if something completely illogical happens in a story, it still happened with a rationale behind it, and even if the occurrence was somehow actually truly irrational, Renko's interior world would still process it as having a rationale.
I plan to make another thread in just over two weeks so, if you want, you could post the previous entry here now, and post the next entry in that thread.

The two of them continue to laugh at the idea of the poor human suddenly turning into an otter or defenseless bird maybe, only to poof back to normal later at a no-doubt awkward moment, all the way up until the last of the trio finally makes an appearance after running a small errand.
"Hey, was that Renko that was just leaving earlier? Does that mean she already got that hat of hers back?"
"No, apparently she found some other random person's funny hat and now she's gotta take that one back first. I think someone else must've beaten us to the punch and now she's gonna be double-pranked, because she's being led right into the heart of the Hakurei Shrine!"
"Wait, really? All because some hat told her so..?"
Sunny and Star nod back at Luna, the Moon Fairy having been fine with going along with their own prank idea as usual but a small, sympathetic part of her underlying that still didn't want to see Renko's complete exodus from Gensokyo yet. It just wasn't her time!
If she got caught by Reimu, that'd be it. The Miko wouldn't even fully understand the bigger situation at-hand, who would end up being the one to save...
"I-I gotta go back out there real quick..! Just to check on the bag! Make sure I put one last...uh, thing in it!"
"Oh, good idea Luna! Give her /double/ the chance at drinking something funny! Heheh."

But Luna didn't stick around to share in Sunny's revelry. By her own assumptions, it wouldn't be long before Renko ended up in the Lion's Den without anything to defend herself. It was times like these that she was thankful they all lived so close, the Moon Fairy swiftly arriving at the Great Turtle Pond to find Renko crouched behind some distant bushes. If they were going to pull a surprise prank like this on her, the least she could do is make sure she lasts long enough to experience it.
The roof of the Hakurei Shrine was visible just a few yards down the rear private pathway past the treetops, though she knew from experience they were still plenty far away to avoid any incidental auditory detection. The current Miko's old mentor, withered and worn-through after nearly two centuries or so of existence, was busy idly floating in the water near the shoreline by the college girl. He was disinterestedly watching as she finally finished sorting what she needed to between her bag and briefcase, even taking off her replacement hat in anticipation of the journey following this one. It wasn't until he turned very slowly towards the approaching Fairy overhead that he bothered to even so much as move aside from blinking.
"Psst, Hey..! Renko!"
"What the—? Luna Child..?? Get down! What the heck are you doing here?"
"I just heard from Sunny that you were intent on heading to the Shrine now is all and...figured I might be able to help with that a little."
She snapped her briefcase shut as Renko's temperament eased up. "Oh yeah..?"
"Definitely. If I stay right around uh...over there, then I should be able to keep any sounds you might accidentally make muted right up until you get inside her living quarters. You'd have to be on your own from there."
"I can handle that, or I'm pretty sure I can...they'd be more around the front right now anyways, right?"
"U-Uh, yeah, I think so. Just make sure to give me some kind of signal or something before you just run up there, okay?"
"You got it, thanks a bunch for this Luna."
"Sure thing. That actually is a pretty hat, good luck on getting it back home safely~!"
Renko gives a kind nod before scampering off towards another set of bushes closer to the pathway with all her things. She pokes her head out, hair tussled with stray twigs and leaves, just to make sure nobody else was idly wandering behind the place.

Luna got into position as soon as the coast was shown to be clear. Renko turned towards the Fairy and gave her 'signal', a simple thumbs up, and the Moon Fairy activated her innate abilities as soon as the girl took off. She decided to specifically target Renko's shoes, bag and luggage as to minimize the amount of extra noise she could potentially make to the best of her ability. The Fairy trusted that Renko knew how to keep the rest of herself relatively quiet, and that pesky Komainu shouldn't be able to pick up on any intruders as quickly if she can't immediately hear them coming. All Renko would need to do from here is execute things just right, and then she'd be golden. How hard could it be to make it inside there anyways?
Meanwhile, as Renko carefully approached the Shrine by gracefully jumping between the surrounding shrubbery with very little extra noise, the college girl was praying to herself as hard as she could that the latch to the upper storage area wouldn't be hard to reach for a girl her size. Reimu couldn't have been all that tall either, surely it was going to be possible for her as well!
Anonymous No.50123523 >>50126056 >>50129219
>>50123485
As she continued to grow closer, Renko began to gradually overhear idle conversation from the front of the Shrine. It felt a little off to her that she should already be hearing whatever activity is going on up there with any clarity at all up until she realized that, not only was she practically holding her breath again, her steps hadn't even been making any noise against the dirt and grass since she started. Genius!
But it wouldn't last once she was actually inside, she still couldn't get too careless...
"...around? I haven't seen..."
"...just the other day, I was..."
A higher-pitched voice she's never heard before, must've been the Komainu with Reimu after all then. It didn't sound like it from the way they were talking about her but Renko's subconscious was left to wonder if she'd potentially have /two/ of those guards to worry about here because of that, the one she didn't know about maybe even being more dangerous..!

She was nearly up against the back of what must've been the Honden now, Reimu's living space had to be just past that shoji if the note's instructions were serious. Though it couldn't hurt to properly stop and listen in on things, partially to make sure the two Shrinekeepers on-duty were distracted enough for this too.
"It just feels like it's been a long time since she's come to actually hang out with you Miss Reimu, that's all."
"Marisa's a busy girl with more things going on in her personal life than I can bother to keep track of, just because she hasn't been around to eat much of my food lately doesn't immediately mean anything bad."
"Hmph, call it a Guardians Instinct then!"
"You really think so..?"
"Well...maybe it'd just be nice to have some more company here too is all..."
Good enough for her. She un-tenses her back muscles before carefully pulling aside the partitioned paper separating her from her destination. Renko raises herself up with little more than a soft grunt, trying her best not to squeak too many wooden planks beneath her all the way, and slowly slides the shoji shut behind her. She could hear the bottoms of her shoes lightly scrape against the bamboo and straw beneath her once more, everything from here had to be on her own terms now.

There wasn't even so much as a lull in the idle conversation of the two girls outside, something Renko was Not going to wait to simply be made manifest through sheer lack of action. She dared not to set her things down again just yet, keeping one hand free while rapidly scanning the interior of the main space. Reimu's interior décor was sparse, to put things lightly, with little more than a simple wooden kotatsu and a few scattered zabuton with no back stands. There was the occasional decorated wall recess, but the Physicist's attentions became further drawn towards the already-opened rightmost side of the living space. It seemed to contain both Reimu's more personal quarters and a number of religious and spiritual artifacts alike she must've collected after years of serving the Valley. Maybe there weren't as many human visitors around here as there could be right now, according to that guard dog anyways, but it clearly didn't make Reimu any less of a determined Maiden when she wanted to be.
Renko took soft steps further into the rightmost interior as Reimu and her Shrine Guardian continued to talk about what could be versus what was in their lives, panning over the ceiling above her all the while until she found just what she was looking for—the hatch door up into the attic! However, the obvious problem of that entrance being more than twice Renko's height off the floor still remained. There was an outer latch to grip, but no pull-string for the door itself. Maybe that just meant Reimu had one of those...
There it is! A wooden pole with a brass hook propped up in the back corner, Renko could only hope that the hinges on that door wouldn't immediately compromise her position with this next step. She carefully gripped the instrument, bringing it towards that upper latch with little resistance until the faint /tink/ of the metal surfaces colliding told her it was time to pull down. She tugged back on the rod with the faintest amount of pressure she could muster only for the door to slide out of the frame with little resistance. Something immediately tried spilling out of the freshly-opened gap which brought Renko to the edge of panic before she realized it was little more than a simple rope ladder.
She gave the rope a bit more breathing room only for the whole thing to eagerly unfurl before her with a mild clatter.

Renko tensed as the rope ladder gently swayed. She closed her eyes tight and prepared herself for the worst...but Reimu and her Komainu simply continued to talk.

Up until Reimu seemingly interrupted herself that is.

A quick question for any readers as well: would you rather have updates every 12 hours or so or more closer to a full day between them?

I took this to heart and decided to spend this day on a walk thru nature(so Renko would like me more, obviously). I'm very tired after it, but it was very enjoyable, so thank you!

"Dreams are things to be made into reality" seems to suggest Renko isn't an idealist of any kind, so I don't think she would agree with me there.
It's interesting to try to figure Renko's philosophy. Ever since I first read a Hifuu album, I always thought Renko would be Heidegger's favorite 2hu. Renko is truly herself and refuses to mask in any way, is self-sufficient, seems well-aware of her own condition in the world and is generally able to abstract herself from it, and her and Heidegger have the same analytical kind of thinking. And Heidegger has a decent pull in Japan too!

I tend to agree. Say what you want about ZUN's writing, but he knows how to come up with characters that work on their own. This is actually what got me into Touhou.
>Wouldn't that be too early for a new thread?
I think that's actually the ideal time between threads, but I can see why someone would believe it is too long or short a period. But that date was chosen for a reason, in about 2-3 weeks it's my birthday.

A day would probably be best, since it gives people more time to post, both about the story and in general.
To be completely honest, I think the story was at its best when you wrote a new entry while people were reacting to the last one(I think that's probably best for all fics of that kind), but I understand that you can't do that if you want to write a more involved story

Mmm, it's true that there was something really special about the inception of the Dollquest story but, unfortunately, the landscape of /jp/ has now changed in a very palpable way since then and I have little interest in simply wanting lightning to strike twice (not to come off as harsh or anything). I do still try and incorporate current topics of the threads when I can, even when I haven't always kept an eye on them daily which is neat, but it won't always work well in execution and that's okay. I'm a big amateur just having fun writing this too. Don't feel pressured by the need to read it now, it's also why it'd be uncouth of me to just dump everything at once. If my prose do end up getting awful enough then I can always relegate future updates to the DX Archive and only announce story updates in the OC thread, I just know it might end up as a far sloppier tale if I 100% improvise things every time.
But thanks as always for the feedback, it's nice to know you're still willing to share that sort of stuff whenever quest-time rolls around.

"What? What is it, Aunn? You got this funny look on your face suddenly."
"I'm sorry Miss Reimu, I just thought I heard a weird noise...like someone dropping a bunch of wood or something."

Nobody said a word for a full ten seconds. Renko could feel her pupils shaking in place as a flock of sparrows cawed in the distance.

The two outside soon resumed talking idly, Renko sighing in relief before setting the pole right back where she found it and starting her climb up. It'd be tough with the suitcase but as long as she didn't end up banging it against the frame of the door a bunch while climbing up then she would just need to take a little time with it.

Nearly four whole minutes of finagling up a free-hanging rope ladder with only one free hand later, Renko sweating bullets the entire climb up and nearly stumbling off all-together at the last minute from her clammy palms, and she was finally where she needed to be. At least for now anyways, the journey back southwest towards the Canal area again after this wasn't exactly one she was 100% looking forward to. She slowly brought up the rope ladder behind her before re-clasping the hatch with little more than a faint squeak and a metallic click.
And here she was. She kept her handbag over her shoulder for the time being but Renko took to setting her briefcase down near the hatch and gingerly held this 'K.A.' person's hat with both hands as she took a look at her surroundings. There was a number of festival-related items up here to start, everything striped or paper-lined resting in random piles near the door for ease of access, though she could've done without the few random Noh performance masks staring her down from those piles too. Dust danced beautifully around the high-beams above, a single unlit candle hanging from them in stillness, though Renko had to stifle back a cough through watery eyes when she unintentionally stumbled through an errant cloud of the stuff. Were her eyes really going that bad already..?
There were some small furniture pieces that had been draped over, though nothing bigger than maybe a large wicker chair. However, among the items was a plethora of ancient traditional shrine equipment alongside a few stockpiled goods. Some unlabeled granary sacks were propping up a number of ornate-looking and, frankly, grossly-oversized Shinto purification rods. They looked extremely dusty, though she found it a little hard to imagine someone like Reimu wielding what was essentially a massive tapestry staff donned with enormous jingle bells with expert finesse in combat so she supposed it made sense they were up here. The floor leading up to the front of the attic was lined with other similar artifacts—things like sealed jars, ornate garments fit for teenagers and young women alike, various types of throwable needles, some outside standing torches, a few small mystery crates and...

"Wait, what the..?"
Renko felt like at least one double-take was justified enough after noticing something that seemingly shouldn't have been there at all, that being a late-20th Century road sign and one she was extremely familiarized with as well: 'No Entry'

Was...was this the key mystery object? She stood in front of the weathered and rusted traffic sign on the floor while limply holding the white sunhat off to her side, fishing out the note from her dress pocket once again just to make sure she'd actually done everything right.
"Head to these coordinates in the eastern mountains...bring hat to undisclosed location in upper storage area...what else even Was there then??"
The college girl was nearly ready to start ranting and raving to herself over such a wasted use of her time when a sudden new, third voice joining in on the conversation from outside reminded her why it'd be smarter to keep it all to herself for now.

"Reimucchi~! Reimucchi~! Have ya heard the news?"
"Oh, afternoon Sumireko. I was hoping I'd get a chance to talk to you soon."

Wait a minute.../that other girl Marisa had mentioned!!/ She was Here?? /NOW?!/

Renko dropped the hat to the floor and immediately went towards the front wall of the attic to peer through some of the partitioned paneling. There were Reimu's legs hanging off the front steps. The green-haired Komainu apparently named 'Aunn' was laying down on her own off to the side of the main pathway while her supposed ancestor barreled right down the middle towards Reimu.
'This girl needs some better manners than that...Wait.'
"Wait, /you/ wanted to talk to /me/ about something? Why? Is there some kinda new exciting Incident happening somewhere?"
The high school girl looked around excitedly with stars in her eyes, temporarily forgetting why she'd even come all this way from Kourindou in the first place.

Renko knew that poor vision was something that ran in the family but, even with the young girl's magenta spectacles, she was already starting to see those immediate personal reflections she still hadn't considered herself ready to face yet.
"Well I—eh, that's...I don't really know yet. Maybe? It's probably nothing, Marisa's just got something weird going on with herself again is all..."
"Oh! So does that mean you know what's happened with her after all then?"
"What do you mean by 'what's happened with her'? What sort of news am I supposed to know here?"
"Well, I was over at Kourindou like usual when some little village boy came runnin' in! He started askin' us if we knew anything about what happened with Mari-chan, right? Apparently: someone thrashed up her witch house in the woods and now nobody knows where she is!"
"What?! Miss Marisa is Missing then??"
"Are you serious about this? Did you actually see the place for yourself?"
"No, I came runnin' right over here as soon as we found out from that guy. But! He did mention seeing someone else there this morning; a brown-haired village girl with a hat just like mine, 'cept the bow isn't as cool. Know anyone like that?"

'Wait a second...that replacement hat for today!'
A deep, deep sinking feeling formed in the pit of her gut as soon as she realized they had to have been the exact same hat. That, too, was once a gift from her father passed on from her grandmother. Though the key differences were that had been a parting gift once she'd finally moved out for college and it certainly hadn't come with its own ribbon back then.
Renko heard Reimu break out into a frustrated sneer before she watched as the Miko indignantly rose to her feet, intensely staring into the cobblestones below.
"That little...alright, it's settled then. There IS something going on here and I'M not just going to sit around and let more disaster happen! Aunn, you're with me in case something goes wrong in the Forest."
"Right~!" The loyal Shrine-Dog jumped to her feet with confident anticipation, leaving Renko to wonder what they would end up doing about—
"Hey! What about me, Reimucchi? Can I join along for this too finally?
The Shrine Maiden looked on at the lone, young Esper, having not been far from her own age just a small while ago, and carefully considered the repeated request for a change.
'It would've been nice to have someone around to watch the Shrine...but if Sumireko has something to do with this new Usami girl, then...'
"A-Alright, yeah, sure, whatever...just stay close and don't cause any trouble!"
The Shrine had survived through that Eternity incident with the Lunarians just fine after everything that'd happened with Mizuchi, just a few minutes away at the Magic Shop couldn't hurt.
"Hooray~!! I won't let you down Miss Miko, trust me!" Sumi pulls out her printed pistol 'Kaiho-tan' in celebratory cheer and strikes a pose with it that makes Renko cringe for the sole reason of taking her back to many an afternoon home alone after high school where she'd do just the same with her own various prop guns at home.
She begins to wonder if her parents had even bothered to keep all those faux firearms for her after leaving until the three girls below all break into a northern sprint, Reimu leading the charge. It likely wouldn't take them long to head back after seeing the wreckage from the window hole, but...
Wait, SHIT! Her extra things..! What if that pesky dog sniffs out her hidden clothes and then they have tangible evidence of her existence?? She could live without a spare shirt or two, sure, but she might as well try swinging by there in case they—

"Headed somewhere in a hurry too?"

Renko turns around in a flash only for her entire body to stiffen out of sudden shock from the very sights and sounds before her.
Hunched over her shoulder for who knows how long now floated a young, female apparition who couldn't have been all that older than Renko in appearance at most. Her wispy beach-blonde hair floated aimlessly around her paled skin, as if she was submerged in water, while her dirtied-yellow irises stared back at Renko with an almost endearing fascination. She lets the traffic sign from earlier dangle freely below her with both white-gloved arms as the cobalt fabric of her dress flickers ephemerally though the beams of light coming in. With a gentle lift of one of her fingers, the red-ribboned sunhat from below twirls over through the air onto her awaiting head. The more frazzled parts of her floating hair suddenly seemed a lot more tame now that the two had been reunited once again, the girl taking a slow & sweet sigh of relief in the face of this fulfilled favor.
Reimu's attic began to smell like a boardwalk.

"You're...K.A., aren't you?", Renko says while pointing a weary finger.
The figure does a slightly-dramatic courtesy by taking off her hat as well and partially bowing before her new acquaintance.
"Kana K. Anaberal, humbly at your service Ma'am."

Oddly enough, the strangest thing about this girl so far was the fact that, on top of everything else, she spoke her Japanese fluently with a distinct Old American accent. What the Hell was this girl's deal..?
"Renko, Renko Usami—charmed." She stands fully straight and dusts herself off a little. "So let me guess: you're some kind of Poltergeist, aren't you?"
"Oh my, and someone who's done her research to boot! What a fascinatingly weird girl you must be in a place like this. What gave it away?"
"The fact you have a physical trigger object that doesn't immediately seem to be tied to some kind of grudge."
"And even that still isn't jarring for you, huh? What are you, some kind of researcher here from the future again?"
"Well I am actually here t—wait, 'again'? What do you—oh god, Wait, No! One question at a time..! I /am/ here to find out more about Gensokyo but that shouldn't have to include running random errands for Ghosts!"
"Poltergeists."
"Whatever!! Why'd you just leave it back there if it was so important to you, huh?? The only reason I found that hat in the first place is because I was already busy trying to find my OWN hat!"
"Ahh, I see now. I wouldn't be all that well-known anyways but you really are new around here, aren't you?"
"/Well??/"

"/Well/, many years in the past, I was once apart of a competition where the victor would be granted any reasonable prize she could imagine. There was only supposed to be one of us that made it but, somehow, I ended up being one of three others to 'succeed'. Up until that point, I'd spent all my time in Gensokyo haunting a decrepit mansion off to the West. So, when the time came for my request, I asked to be relocated to Reimu's Shrine!"
"And I'm sure she wasn't exactly thrilled at the idea of that, right?"
Kana lets out a warm laugh, fondly recalling the many times when Reimu was still young enough for the occasional good scare or two before the inevitable frustrated runaround with her would begin. Those really were the days...
"Not in the slightest~! I got sealed away by her a few times because of that, poorly I might add, but eventually I think she just grew..."
A subtle shift in her tone as the light behind Kana's eyes seems to flicker and dim for only but a moment.
"...tired...of things. Of dealing with me mostly, which is when she decided to take my traffic sign and abandon it with great prejudice in that small villa you must've found my hat in."
"Calling it a 'villa' seems like sort of a stretch if you ask me."
Kana shrugs. "To each their own then. I decided to spend a lot of time on my own in that place, even now I still don't fully know why. Nobody really ever visited, but I just...didn't feel like going out to see anyone else much either after that."
"Did Reimu threaten you too after dropping you off or something?"
"Eheh, that'd make for a great joke if it didn't actually happen. I never thought much of such seemingly empty words right away back then but, by the time I was finally ready to try heading back, it seemed as if Reimu really had been through enough to be able to follow-through with that threat after all..."
"Oh.../oh./"
"Indeed. That was just before the Eternal Night Incident and she had already grown well-accustomed to rubbing shoulders with the Great Sages of Gensokyo by then. But that was years ago, you just couldn't have known."
"So then why still come back again at all and risk something more Permanent?"

"Shouldn't a curious young girl like you understand the appeal of having an exclusive look into something you'd otherwise never be apart of? Isn't that at least part of the whole reason behind your motivations for being here?"
"..."
She supposed the Poltergeist did at least have her there and gave her own uncommitted shrug in response.

"Even still, all I did was split a small chunk of my essence into my hat and leave it there as a fail-safe in case the worst really was to come upon my re-arrival. I would've been just fine in the end as long as that was still out there, though my second entrance into the Shrine turned out to, ultimately, be a quiet one. I faced no opposition when tucking away my sign in here and there hasn't even been any surprise raids by her on the attic to check for my presence. It was years before she did even uncover my sign again, and on complete accident to boot."
"Obviously you survived that encounter unscathed though, didn't you? How else would she have just decided to let you stay after threatening you back in that shack?"

Truthfully, Kana still wasn't sure what must've been going through Reimu's head during that quiet afternoon in the attic, but perhaps her lack of any further conviction from there spoke more volumes towards her honest emotions than anything else she could've done.

"I'm sure she's simply forgotten most of the smaller details back then from her first few years as an active Miko, that's all. It can't be helped."

"Is that right..."
Renko let Kana's words roll around on her tongue for a few moments. She never was one for giving up a sense of indignancy when she felt it was just, but it certainly was true that you couldn't fully control what people chose to hold on to in the end.
"That's all ancient history anyways, what's really important is what you've finally been able to do for me here. For that alone, I'll always be grateful!"
Kana holds out a gloved hand for Renko to shake and she does so after a moment of hesitation. It wasn't as if she wanted to make some big name for herself by going around with all these tasks but it at least felt polite to the Poltergeist.
"Just don't end up counting on me banking any potential 'favors' from that right away then, I'm headed off to a completely different corner of Gensokyo after this and need to deal with more personal business first."
"Ah...your own journey to find a sentimental hat if I remember correctly."
"That's right! Now if you'll excuse me, Miss 'Kanaberal', I'll be lucky if I can make it over there by sundown at this rate."
"Actually..!", she says as Renko turns around on a heel to leave, "If you're headed to that Bamboo Forest now then may I at least put you in the hands of someone who would know the area well? No offense."
"Hmph. And how might that work exactly if you still can't risk leaving the Shrine grounds much?"
"Simple! Once you're back near the Village Willow Trees, just follow the shoreline of the Bamboo Forest westward until you come across an overgrown pathway among the stalks. Travel down that until you reach a small hut and be sure to tell the person inside that Kana sent you~!"
"So much for you being a /complete/ recluse then, how am I even supposed to trust this person? Or you with sending me over for that matter?"
"Hmmmm. Then...how about this!" With a snap of her velveted fingers, both Renko's suitcase by the door and the repaired handbag she'd been keeping with her were teleported out of sight in a small teal flash. The items left nothing more than glittery vapor trails of their previous forms that rapidly dissipated in the wake of a stunned Renko.
"H-Hey..! I just got that bag back!! Where the hell'd you send them to?!"
"Relax, I just sent them back outside to save you some trouble. They're hidden inside Reimu's storage shed now though so you'll need to be sure to stop by there before leaving. Easy!"
More of a forewarning would've been nicer but Renko knew it wouldn't do her well to dwell on the semantics when action was what she needed to be taking.
"Fine, fine! Thanks I guess, but I was never here either! Got it?"
Kana pretends to zip her mouth shut and throw away the key as Renko slowly backs up towards the attic's entry hatch once more, the spirit silently waving goodbye to her first new acquaintance in decades as the rope ladder clatters back down to the Shrine floor. Maybe Renko could've found out just a little more over what made that spooky girl tick that would've made for a decent side-article to her report, if her time hadn't been cut in to today by so much, but she no longer needed to be keeping herself in the Hakurei Danger Zone now and that's what mattered.

She softly stood upon the bamboo mats of the ground floor, wondering how she'd be able to get the ladder back up there in a timely fashion before Kana was kind enough to pull everything back up on her behalf and leave the latch as seemingly untouched as ever. Renko assumed that Kana at least wasn't thick enough to teleport her belongings into any place that was currently securely locked, sliding open Reimu's rear shoji to make sure of such herself ASAP before something stopped her dead in her tracks again: the rapidly-approaching voices & footsteps of Reimu, Aunn and her great-great-great grandmother as they were finally returning from Marisa's.
'Gotta hide..!'
The college girl dove to the stones below and army-rolled her way deep enough under the rear veranda to be completely draped in shadow, just in time to see everyone step back onto Shrine grounds from beside the very same storage unit Renko needed to get to. She did her best to stifle her heavy breathing while listening in on their passing conversation.
"We can't come to anything too drastically conclusive yet, Sumireko. Dream doppelgangers or not, all I knew was Marisa had some kind of contact with someone that only Partially fits your own description."
"But like, I've already told ya I'm an only child and the only member of the Club! What would I even have to do with a break-in like that?"
The...'Club'..? That couldn't have been...but then...those ancient scrubbed school records she'd partially recovered years back were just..?
"It could be that someone's been using your likeness in bad faith Miss Sumireko, maybe as a way to further an evil agenda we couldn't know about yet!"

"Hey, cut it out with the conspiracy talk around here! We've had enough weird information as it stands going around from that crazy clam Youkai without some random human girl causing a ruckus too."
Renko watched with tense anxiousness as the three then stopped in front of the rear entrance where she'd just exited from.
"Uh, Reimucchi...you do realize you've left your back door open this whole time apparently, right?"
"No...no I didn't. I haven't been back inside in hours."
"I would've remembered if you had gone back inside for something Miss Reimu."

The three girls seemingly turn to each look at each other in silence as Renko resisted every urge in her body to audibly facepalm over leaving the shoji wide open. Reimu immediately breaks into a sprint and passes just above the Physicist's hiding space in an effort to find anything amiss. Aunn follows suit by beginning to snoop through Reimu's kitchen off to the right while Sumireko nonchalantly steps into the living space after them and shuts the paper-paneled door behind her. /There wasn't any time to waste!/ Renko overheard a small portion of Aunn and Reimu beginning to squabble between themselves over what could've happened here as she rolled back out into the ever-burning daylight and rose to her feet with a start. She had to consciously remind herself not to stomp her shoes and immediately give herself away as she hurried over to Reimu's storage and quickly twisted herself inside the dark, cramped space with a single smooth maneuver of the awaiting door...which unfortunately made far more noise shutting itself closed than Renko had anticipated it would.

Within seconds, all audible activity within the Hakurei Shrine ceased and Renko could hear Reimu's characteristic rapid pace over towards the shed with mere moments for the college girl to prepare.
She had to hide somewhere again, Anywhere!

The Hakurei Miko angrily opened up the shed's entrance just as Renko dove behind something vaguely humanoid shaped—what she prayed would be the perfect cover. Reimu peered through the dim and dusty space for any given discrepancies as Renko held a hand over her mouth tightly and dared not to move an inch. The light shining in from the door, however, was thankfully just enough for the college girl to notice her belongings right beside her! But why teleport them here in the corner of all places? They were hidden enough amongst everything else, sure, but still...
Looking up carefully without moving her head, Renko could finally see that she'd been crouching behind some kind of shiny mannequin in a pale-blue maid outfit. It'd been propped up near a few crates and burlaps sacks next to a broom, but what stood out to Renko the most was the giant radiation warning sign plastered across its back. She peered through the pointy bangs of the model's green hair from where she was only to see Reimu ease herself with a grunt and practically slam the entrance shut. The force was enough to bounce the frame away from the opposing wall slightly, still allowing a sliver of light to spill into the otherwise pitch-black space.
"Nevermind, another dud! If this just turns out to be something Clownpiece is pulling on us again..."

Renko waited to breathe until she could hear everyone inside talking to themselves, getting a grip on the model maid in front of her to stand up again and being taken aback by the immediate sensation of cold and polished steel under her palms. She attempted to somewhat jostle the thing as quietly as possible only to fail to anticipate how truly heavy it apparently was..! Standing fully upright, this figure couldn't have been that much taller than Renko either. Was the Physicist fully expected to believe that Reimu had apparently been sheltering some kind of dysfunctional nuclear-powered automaton in what was basically a woodshed for years?? Could Gensokyo's apparent past even /get/ more confusing from here?! It was too dark to immediately find any sort of switch or button for power, but a chill went up Renko's spine all the same as her fingers carefully traced the hidden seams and painted rivulets of this humanoid mechanism in the partially-illuminated eerie darkness. Even the most advanced automatons and android-prototypes of her time hadn't yet reached this level of full immersion and supposed independence...at least on any public level.

The others were still talking things over within the Hakurei Shrine walls, but Renko was now far too hidden to be able to fully make anything out. They could all break out into a fight amongst themselves for all she cared, what she needed to do now was get all her things out of here without looking back before it got any later in the day!
With that considered however, the smartest thing to really do would be not to rush her egress any time soon and wait until the perfect moment of stillness presented itself.
Wouldn't be wise to head back out there when they could still easily step outside again at any time...

For me it was flatlands as far as the eye can see. I was walking along a river to see if it leads anywhere. I didn't find anything interesting, but seeing the open fields filled with herons and egrets leading up to a forest with some village's tilled roofs and church spire just barely peaking over felt very pleasant, the water critters were nice too. In the end, I had to return with a combination of the satisfaction of having gone further than ever before and the tiring realization that I will have to go even further to find something new. It is in times like those that I remember this pearl of Renkonian wisdom:
>Work that's not tiring isn't enjoyable at all.
>There's no dystopia more dull than a world where everything works out just how everyone wants it.
And who knows, maybe that's how most of the club's adventures go, a day long trip not really leading anywhere.
I happen to have some free time today, so I read the previous part so I suppose I'll post my thoughts here:
I didn't realize until now how long the story is getting.
I really don't care for the fairies.
Assuming the narration is meant to follow Renko's thoughts, would she really know what the occult balls are called?
>but it looks like she was dressed just plain enough to come off as normal
Gensokyo as a whole does seem to have an overabundance of old european clothes, so Renko would only look slightly out of place.
Trudging thru the fairy segments was worth it to see Renko's reaction to the Village. It's incredible to think that Renko's only experiences with traditional culture come from books(presumably), religious buildings, and carefully managed "culture sanctuaries."
I think characters get namedropped too easily, especially when it's already pretty much obvious who they are.
I think the story could potentially have a problem with narrative overextension, which is pretty common with even the most professional Touhou narrative fanworks. The issue is that it can make the story feel more like a set of landmarks the author wants to include, rather than a single narrative flowing naturally. I think this can work just fine if the individual stories were more self-contained, but these are pretty interdependent.
The prose was very good, I'd even say the best I've read on this board. I think you struck a good balance between pointlessly complex and simple language. The descriptions and dialogue were usually very pleasant to read while also leaving enough to the imagination. I'd even say you've gotten better at writing since the original story.
I hope I'll get around to reading the next part too.

>flatlands as far as the eye can see
>seeing the open fields filled with herons and egrets leading up to a forest with some village's tilled roofs and church spire just barely peaking over felt very pleasant
>a day long trip not really leading anywhere
Sounds especially tranquil! Maybe next time you'll be able to make it a little farther even. If I was in your shoes and had any fumos maybe I'd also take them along.
>would she really know what the occult balls are called?
Yes, though only because Marisa name-dropped them in Part 2. Otherwise they would indeed still be mostly foreign.
On the subject of the narration itself however, I will at least take this opportunity to also say it's meant to be fluid between both Renko's own real-time perceptions and an unreliable omniscient third-party. It's mostly accounting for things I can't rightly talk about yet but it's why it can also feel a little loose at times (aside from my own given technical shortcomings).
>I think characters get namedropped too easily
I was wondering if I should dial that back more or not...but duly noted from here. I tend to be dramatic when I don't really need to as well.
>The issue is that it can make the story feel more like a set of landmarks the author wants to include, rather than a single narrative flowing naturally.
>these are pretty interdependent
That, too, was something I wanted to avoid just for the sake of not having the story feel too gimmick-y but that could prove difficult from here after I've already largely plotted out how things will go. I want Renko to feel as explorative as she would be in this situation but I can't deny the fact I also want to have a little fun indulging some more personally-fulfilling moments. The Fairies are understandably frustrating due to having very little impact on the overall story, but I did very much enjoy writing out their little camping scenario too.
>The prose was very good, I'd even say the best I've read on this board.
This feels almost crazy to me to hear...of all the stories to have been dumped on this board over the years I'm sure mine will be far from such heights in the end. But it's quite flattering to hear that alongside meaningful criticism too, the least I could do is try and stand up as well as I can to such a perception.
And yes, that drunk Renko was indeed by my hand. I really wish I did more smaller sketches like that since it felt like I was on to something there last year but the other ways I've branched out have also been fun.

And so, Renko Usami stayed just where she was in Reimu's storage for another twenty minutes or so before trusting that the lull in major activity from within the Shrine, combined with the lack of any other nearby outside presence, meant the ideal time for her leave had come at last. With her bag over her shoulders and her briefcase in-hand, she carefully slid open the shed's shoji while checking every which way for passers by and silently slid it back just as it was before. Doing her best to keep to the soft grass from there, she quickly retreated into the Forest of Magic and spent the rest of her afternoon travelling back to the southern end of the Valley. It took hours to snake her way back down & around to the foot of the mountain rages /and/ cross back over the fields & scattered trees before she was even back within sight of the canal, but she made the vital decision to ensure she'd end up on the right side of it this time. The occasional potion provision from her handbag helped the young girl fight her way through the exhaustion all the while.

A few more minutes of walking along the bamboo-laden shoreline later, Renko being half-tempted to try seeing how deep the canal was herself under the setting sun if it wasn't for the Village's proximity, and the Physicist finally stumbled upon the path Kana had told her about at last. Or she was at least hoping this was the correct one...the slightly-yellowed dirt tangled over with vines and weeds alike stretched forebodingly into this Forest of The Lost until it too became lost in the encroaching darkness. It was still too early for any major stars to start shining overhead but that wouldn't last too much longer, she couldn't afford much more hesitation from here either way. Trekking on ahead, with one last look over her shoulder at the Village behind her, the nurturing sounds of the nearby running stream were gradually replaced with the errant chirping of insects and birds alike from nearly all angles. The stalks around her grew ever-taller as she continued, her current close perspective on them somewhat rivaling the dizzying metropolitan towers of abandoned steel and glass she'd already been used to. If it wasn't for the hardly-beaten path below, the many bamboo branches would quickly tangle over each other and block off any single solid view of the multicolored sky overhead to any unwitting travelers. There had to be so much history in this region of the valley for that sole reason: its inscrutability from within.
Even Maribel never found her own way out of this place whenever her dreams would take her here, only ever hopping out elsewhere by chance. She'd get a laugh over her finally being in a place like this, Renko would never be able to live up to the Forest's name!

She chuckled to herself fondly as she continued her slow journey forward, only noticing how close she was to this next rendezvous point after opening her eyes again. She nearly stopped all-together upon soaking in the full state of this supposed abode, not finding it impossible that someone would keep themselves holed up in a place so derelict but simply not fully trusting that whatever company within those walls would necessarily be worth her trouble. It couldn't have been any more than the size of a small RV at best, both in width and height, though the roof of this likely single-roomed space rested at an incredible slant. At least whoever lived here didn't have to worry about water leaks...probably...
Renko edged closer while holding her things close as an eerie silence began to surround her. One of a false and easily fracturable calm. Seemingly random village objects and recovered outside world detritus littered most of the free space across the immediate front of the property, somewhat reminiscent of the Kirisame Magic Shop, though the difference between them seemed to be the fact these items were somehow far more manically organized than even Marisa's brand of organized chaos. The impression being given here was...weird. This was all very Weird and Strange to Renko when she'd already spent days in this land chock-full of the very same, setting off more than a few internal red flags that the girl still decided to ignore for Kana's sake if nothing else. She grew close to the moss-covered, rickety bamboo door and accompanying glassless window port, unsure if she should audibly announce her presence here or not before deciding not to think it over much and give a few firm knocks.

An immediate clatter from within made Renko reel away from the door slightly as more random objects inside were thrown aside and past the window frame by her supposed expected company.

"O-Oh, Hey—! Wait just a...Gah! /Move/ you stupid—D-Don't you go anywhere out there! I-I'm gonna, Oh dear, I-I..."

Renko continued to wait through the unnecessary tension until seeing a few tufts of reddened hair bob their way past the window frame. The knob jiggled harshly a few times, frustrated grumbling clearly heard from behind, before the front door was flung open with a resounding slam. An apparent seagull Renko hadn't even noticed perched on the roof nearby flew off immediately from the startling force.
She wasn't exactly sure of who or what to expect from a place like this, but the partially disheveled and Certainly unhinged-looking orchid-clad woman in front of her nearly ready to brandish a crossbow on-sight did not disappoint.
"Human Villager PD, Lieutenant Officer Chief Kotohime!! Who are you?? HANDS WHERE I CAN SEE 'EM, WHO SENT YOU?!?!"
Renko feels the blood pool away from her face slightly, letting her briefcase thud to the dirt below and raising both hands at the elbows while staring directly into the pointed tip of a metallic arrowhead. Best to follow the girl's orders for now then apparently, some apparent 'Department' though...
"Renko Usami, I'm an Outsider and I'm new here! Kana sent me!"

And just like that, the neurotic jittering of the arrow's shaft held taught in-place ceased as Kotohime lowered her weapon with a disarming smile, completely betraying her previous 'all-business' overtones. The college girl felt like she was finally starting to better piece together the apparent character of this girl, though would've been ready to admit in a Heartbeat that this was clearly far more the expertise of someone in a field like Merry's.
"Oh! Well then why didn't you just say so?" She lets the arrow fire freely into the ground between them with little indication, causing Renko to lurch at the sight of the arrowhead being mere centimeters away from effortlessly piercing her toes.
"Any friend of Little Miss Keeper is a friend of mine. How can I help you, Citizen?"
"E-Ehh, ermm...w-well I—(ahem), I'm just trying to make may way towards a Clinic deep within the forest. Know of it? Kana seemed to have thought you'd make for a good field guide of some kind...uh, 'Officer'."
"Hmmm, I /might/ know of it~"
"Well then why be coy about it? Do you or do you not?"
"Ah, that's right! You must be talking about Eientei then after all."
"What?? So you didn't even..? Urgh, Whatever! Are you going to be able to get me there or not then??"
"That's going be a 'No' from me, Ma'am! I've been banned from the property for several years now~"
"You—?!"
"/But!/ I know someone who should be able to take care of that for you instead! See? Problem solved."

Last time Renko checked, she was fairly certain that discreet operations didn't always need to involve endless daisy chains of every person around, but there was still enough fleeting patience in her for at least one more go at this runaround.

"Fine Then. Just point me in the right direction and I'll get off of your land."
"Oh that won't be necessary, it's easy to lose yourself in woods like these. HA HA. I'll lead you to her myself~! I insist."
Before the Physicist could so much as even begin to object, the Reclusive Princess set off beyond her now abandoned door frame with an almost dream-like cheerfulness despite the previous implications of legitimate dangers ahead. She continued a few paces left further past the nearest stalks of her house before snapping back towards Renko, who could only stare on blankly in increasing bewildered confusion.
"Well, Renko? Aren't you coming along? You have to see the Doctor, don't you?"
Renko breaks her gaze in hesitance before sighing and picking her briefcase back up.

"...that I do."

The many mixing pinks and oranges overhead wavered in the deepening violet shade as the college girl continued behind a content Kotohime for nearly five whole minutes of complete silence. It wasn't as if she was dying to make immediate conversation with this stranger, their mutual affinity for certain strands of strange aside, though she could've done with anything to juxtapose the otherwise off-putting stillness of this traitorous landscape. She almost started figuring that Poltergeist might've even set her up with a friend that personally deals with Nosy Outsiders, with the way this Kotohime Character kept elusively weaving her way past branch after branch—scarcely looking back for long, but their journey thankfully came to its conclusion after Renko rounded a given bend ahead of her to find Kotohime hunched low behind a large rock near a sudden clearing. A small stream seemed to trickle past somewhere into a pond ahead in the grass, though Renko found it tough to make out much more from there until assuming a similar position next to her appointed guide.
"So what am I looking at here?"
"Shh! You can't be too loud right now. As long as I remember my nights correctly, we can't afford to scare away the girl you'll need to meet here."
"Why would /we/ be the scary ones here then if she's supposed to me helping me out??"

"Every so often she comes to this little pond all by herself, and she's lived in the area longer than even I have. Oh, look! There she comes now! She'll show you how to get to the Clinic for sure."
Renko stared ahead where Kotohime was pointing through the shade and was, admittedly, surprised to actually see another silhouette timidly emerging through the darkness at all. A few yards ahead stood a crimson-eyed brunette clad in loose robes of red, white and black. A gleaming pendant sat above her modest chest as she held her arms close to herself and anxiously looked around. Renko could tell she was clearly trying to make sure she was alone and held herself close to their hiding rock. From a distance, part of this woman's long hair looked just a little funny near the top half of her head until the college girl noticed an errant twitch come from what she then recognized as massive canid-like ears. Merry had run into a human-faced beast herself during her time in this forest but it wasn't as if the Physicist was expecting to fully mirror that in her own way for this. The beast girl sat herself down across some other large stones by the waterline of the pond, wistfully gazing into her own rippling reflection as her animal ears remained angled down in some kind of shame or perhaps even discomfort.
"Hey, Chief Kotohime! How am I supposed to break the ice with this girl if we're busy worried about not...scaring...her."

The college girl turned to her right only to find that, with no warning or interruption, she'd been completely abandoned without any trace left by the strange, red-headed recluse.
Her job here was done it seems, granting Renko her underlying wish of handling the important matters herself once again.

The beast girl ahead was staring deeply into the open sky above them now through the clearing, wispy clouds overhead preventing any early traces of the moon from appearing until it was properly dark enough as bleeding magentas gradually shifted closer and closer to a shade depleted of any more token red. She looked almost hopelessly concerned as Renko took to gradually inching her way to the left-most side of the rock in preparation for walking towards the girl herself. It likely wouldn't do Renko any good to sneak up on her all the way until the last possible moment, this needed to be another bridge she'd be able to build successfully after all, so maybe she could pull this off if she got close enough to be able to start a seemingly casual stroll without raising further suspicion..?

The girl began to take a few quick, lurching steps forward out past the rock once the canid girl's attentions were drawn in the opposite direction. She made very little noise beyond her own stifled breathing and got nearly 33% of the way there before both girls were startled by a sudden loud, Crunchy snap.
Renko leaped back a whole foot after accidentally stepping on a withered and, now broken, bamboo stalk concealed in the grass, covering her mouth in shock as she watched the beast woman whip her entire body around on a dime. Her slitted pupils constricted into little more than incredibly anxious lines at the sight of this random interloper intruding during a private night of hers. Didn't the humans around here know any better than to wander around willy-nilly in places like these during nights of the Full Moon??
The forest inhabitant began to stammer out some form of retort towards Renko's presence before simply scanning the area and deciding it was best to retreat back into the safety of the bamboo for now. Her flustered scurry made it as far as the nearby bushes at the edge of the clearing before the Physicist reached out an arm in protest and made herself known properly.
"W-Wait! I'm not here to hurt you, I promise! I just need some help finding my way to the Clinic..."

The beast girl hesitated while partially hunched into the awaiting leaves and safety of her natural habitat, already halfway out the theoretical door to this situation, though something about Renko's genuine cadence caused the girl to remain where she was.
She took a deep breath before deciding to carefully respond after all, looking back at this new stranger over her shoulder from where she was with a slight desperation behind the mild rasp in her voice.

"You...wish to make your way towards Eientei during a night like this?"
"Yes, honest. It's very important that I recover something of mine currently held within its walls."
The beast woman turns towards Renko to fully face her from the bushes, watching closely as the college girl walks towards where she once was next to the rock by the pond before setting her briefcase down and calmly situating herself there in the grass.
The last thing that she needed to do in front of a frightened animal she needed the help of was seem intimidating. The woman's lupine ears eased up slightly at the display, leading her to finally betray her isolationist instincts and start slowly trotting back.

Renko only noticed how incredibly sharpened her ruby-red nails seemed to be after she used them to gingerly brush away a few strands of hair from her face and, for a moment, she could see the faint trail of scraped dead skin the tips of them left in their wake.
"A-And why have I been chosen to apparently assist with this, Stranger? Do you...know who I am..?"
"Not in the slightest. I was sent here by this...Weirdo living in a shack on the other side of that bamboo patch because I'm trying to get my hat back from the people in that Clinic! I'm...sort of new here and lost it while being flown over the Forest of Magic."
"Flown over the...wait a second!" The beast woman finally sits down comfortably on the dewy grass in front of Renko, fully engaged with the conversation now as her walls continue to gradually erode.
"Were you that Crazy Human Outsider that caused that huge stir for the Scarlet Sisters two days ago? And did you run into a red-headed lady with a high collar in the Human Village earlier today?"
"Uh..."
"So it really /is/ you..! You're the Second Usami Girl~! Haha! Oh, this is Great!"
"I-Is it..?!"
"Well sure! You're an Outsider just like that other young human from the big cities beyond the Valley, aren't you?"
"Yeah, I am, and apparently that won't ever stop being my problem around here! How do you even know about all this stuff and why??"

"Oh, where are my manners...I'm sorry. (ahem) My name is Kagerou Imaizumi, one of the founding members of the Underground Grassroots Youkai Network, and it's a pleasure to meet you."
"Wonderful...now every two-bit clique, club and social group around here knows everything they'd ever want to about me. Fantastic..."
"Hey now, don't think of things like that! The Grassroots Network prides itself on being the first source of accurate news and information for disjointed local Youkai over all other relevant sources! You should be thankful you haven't been personally tracked down and interrogated by any errant Tengu reporters around here."
"Hmph, if you say so then. So what, did I end up running into one of your fellow 'associates' in the Village earlier? What was her name...Seki...Beki..?"
"Seki/ban/ki, and yes. We had our annual weekly meeting just earlier today a little more upstream from the Canal, she told me about a newcomer she'd sent to Suzunaan with your exact description before our other primary member corroborated seeing a similarly-dressed individual fleeing the Vampire Mansion with the help of the local Fairies."
"Do you all /really/ have nothing better to do with yourselves?"
"Tch. You're acting like this is some huge invasion of personal privacy we've conducted against you when You're the one carrying out all these ridiculous feats Publicly and in well-known areas! You can't prevent word of mouth from working someone like you into its system, and who was the one trying to sneak up on /me/ at /my/ Private Pond just a minute ago?"
"/Gah!/ Fine!! Egg on my face forevermore for assuming I even had the SLIGHTEST chance at remaining discreet, Whatever! Are you going to be able to help me over to Eientei or not?"

"Well...i-it's the Harvest Moon tonight, b-but I..."
"But what? Why would that matter to..."

She looks on at Kagerou as the beast girl suddenly grows entranced by something above with a strange blank look behind her eyes, nervously scratching away at a nearby stone as an idle tick. Renko followed her gaze to notice the bright yellow-orange glow of tonight's full moon finally starting to peek over the tips of the bamboo stalks and partially shine through the scattered cloud-cover, only breaking her concentration and awe at the sight when Kagerou's stone scraping slowly began to grow more intense. She turned back towards Kagerou with a puzzled look on her face before tracing her eyes down the beast girl's arm to find her scraping hand subtly trembling in-place. She watched as her already overgrown nails slowly grew longer and thicker until they began to noticeably score the stone, the tendons of Kagerou's other hand seizing as it darted over to her wrist and lower arm to lazily scratch against the loose fabric with what soon looked more like animalistic claws more than anything else.
It nearly seemed like the sleeves were almost...receding away from her hands somehow, a strange shadow being cast upon the skin of her arms underneath that maybe wasn't even a simple trick of the light after all...

Renko looked back at Kagrou's face to find her eyes nearly the size of dinner plates, sweat trailing down her temples, breathing heavy and biting into her bottom lip with a set of canines Renko hadn't noticed before.
Her glimmering irises began to shift while drinking in as much of the lunar luminescence as they possibly could.
What, was Renko in some kind of old-fashioned low-budget Horror Movie now?
Anonymous No.50135145 >>50139171

She snapped her comparatively less lanky fingers in front of Kagerou's face to break the beast girl's trance just as the wispy clouds overhead obfuscated any direct view of the Harvest Moon once more.
"Hey! Kagerou! Still with me?"
"H-Huh, what..? I-I...Oh...oh dear..." Her face went completely flush as her ears bent down with shame, appearing slightly thicker than they were when they two had first spoke, and her long-clawed hands quickly covered most of the hot flesh underneath out of sheer instinct. The robe-like sleeves of her gown fell down into the crook of her elbows from the momentum, giving Renko a complete view of what she was now able to properly identify as a thickening pelt of tangled bestial fur. The wiry body hair was currently growing in over itself in hot layers from the wrist-down, though the faint traces and wisps of lengthening hand-hair Renko could now see spreading above the woman's wrists signified that there was still apparently even more to come from here.
Renko would be lying if she claimed that Kagerou's almost dog-like whines through her sniffling embarrassment didn't break her heart at least a little. What kind of world-famous monster from ancient popular culture can't even handle herself at the cusp of one her most unique and defining moments?

"Heyyy, heyyy...you're alright. It's okay, I think I understand now but I'm not scared because of that! See? What's the matter..?"
"Oh how could a Normal human girl like you even understand? I know what kind of girls people out there like! I've seen the magazines! I'm.../hideous/...on nights like these. Other Youkai girls don't even deal with the same bodily issues I do!"
"Hey! Now how could you say something like that with all the other Beast Girls here in Gensokyo? I...haven't really met any of them, but..."
The Werewolf glares deeply into the Physicist's eyes, causing her to falter slightly at first only to then double-down with her given point and suddenly rise to her feet with defiance shining in her eyes.
"But even still! You're a Powerful and Strong individual just like they are, well-known for your capabilities on nights like these! Right?"
"Well it's not like I really...enjoy terrorizing the Villagers that much. I know how to control myself y'know, I'm not some savage."

Of course, a full moon as Abnormally powerful as the Harvest Moon would come with its own set of complications, much like a Blue or Blood Moon would for her, but Kagerou was currently doing everything in her power not to dwell over such a matter.

"Then that's even better! You're a graceful creature with a positive attitude and good friends to boot. What would that Sekibanki girl think at the sight of this? Or maybe even that other Youkai member of yours?"
"...Waka-chan tells me I should learn to better embrace The Wolf sometimes. A-And that I'm...'fluffy' during these nights..."
She hid her red-cheeked gaze under the shade of her bangs from where Renko was standing, but the Physicist could at least tell that was about as genuine as this girl could be.
"Then you can just keep taking things one step at a time until you do feel more okay with that part of yourself, at least around folks like me."
She reaches a hand down for Kagerou to take and stand with, the beast girl looking up at her new acquaintance from behind the little bit of mist collecting in her eyes.
She still felt hesitant, but strangely hopeful towards tonight with this new Renko girl.

"...yeah, Yeah. Okay, I think I can do that."

Her given grip on Renko's hand as she was helped to her feet nearly caused the college girl to wail out in pain, though she tanked it through a tight grimace after seeing how much better she really had made this Youkai girl's mood. However, it was hard for Renko not to still notice that Kagerou seemed to be physically looking down on her far more overtly than she was when they'd initially seen each other. Her eyes trailed down, the sway of Kagerou's frame hugging the dress fabric closely and Renko thinking it simply could've been a trick of the perspective, before clearly seeing that the bottom hem of the woman's dress now sat a good few inches above her ankles and the blades of grass beneath. The state of her claws had apparently been mirrored with her feet as well this entire time, and if the coat coming in over her arms was any indication...
"Y-Yeah! That's the spirit..! I-I'm okay, don't worry."
"Eheh...maybe we just ought to finally head over there. It'll feel a little meandering, but if we head over now then that should give me plenty of time to make it over there with you."
"Time..? Time...for..? O-Oh right, yeah, Duh. Of course. Lead the way then~!"

The Werewolf Girl nodded down at her companion with a warm little smile, holding her hands together in front of herself before cheerily heading further southward into the forest.

I'm starting to get Tolkien.
Otherwise, it's alright. The narration was engaging and the non-utilitarian dialogue felt natural, which are two parts fics tend to struggle with the most.
>>50129219
If I had to hive a critique, you could give more detailed visual descriptions of the environment, although that's not even a persistent problem here.
I also fail to see how this and the fifth segment are different "parts," in that section, Renko was running around, looking for her hat, in this one, she is in a particular place, still looking for her hat. If anything, with a little editorializing, you could section the story so far into almost self-contained chapters pretty well, depending on how much of the story you want to be contingent on Renko looking for her hat.
> The green-haired Komainu apparently named 'Aunn'
I find this line funny.
You could've given Sumi more of a reveal. The first time I read this, I wasn't paying attention and reading "high school girl" genuinely surprised me.
>>50129384
I have to end the post before reading the rest so I'll leave a few reflections here: I think the first two or three segments of the story benefited a lot from their restricted location and cast of characters, and generally had a more simple narrative which was easier to follow. That isn't to say that these entries are plainly worse, I'd say that, at least in sections, especially the last two parts, have been way richer aesthetically, although the narrative is less cause-and-effect and the stories feel a bit crammed although maybe I shouldn't be such an autistic pedant and let you have your self-fulfillment, although that depends on if you want this story to be more a pure idea you want to transmit or a reflection of yourself

On one hand, the rational part of my says that there is a theoretical limit to how much I can walk in a straight line in a day before I get too far or my feet start hurting too badly but on the other hand, the further I go, the more otters and pheasants I meet, so I'll see.
> I will at least take this opportunity to also say it's meant to be fluid between both Renko's own real-time perceptions and an unreliable omniscient third-party
I personally prefer the narration to follow a particular perspective. This wouldn't necessarily make the story better, it's just how I like it.
>of all the stories to have been dumped on this board over the years I'm sure mine will be far from such heights in the end
I will say, some other fics have some advantages of their own, mostly relating to the narrative structure, but you are really good at writing dialogues, narrations and descriptions, and since I read primarily for aesthetics, I appreciate your writings more than those.

You've brought up place history a fair few times. Is that you putting yourself in Renko's shoes, or has to do with the way you think about Gensokyo? I ask because my favorite "area" of Touhou lore is actually the Bomboo Forest's history, and how various details about it get dropped in various contexts.
I really liked this post! The Bamboo Forest of the Lost is probably, even among all the afterlife locations and pocket dimensions, Touhou's most striking location, at least in my opinion. It's quite something to see Renko's reaction to that homogenous, ever-shifting mass.

>I'm starting to get Tolkien
Funny enough, I've yet to read any major book of his and I haven't even really seen his movie adaptations either. We would be so radically different as individuals though, makes me wonder where that overlap might come from and if it's wholly a good thing or not. But thank you kindly for saying so alongside the other strong-points you've pointed out.
>I also fail to see how this and the fifth segment are different "parts,"
In hindsight, I think if I wasn't as worried as I was about making sure that Hatquest was one of the shorter entries then maybe the transition between subjects for these Parts could've been more graceful. To break things down into exact numbers and information here, for example:
- Part 1 and Part 5, Dollquest and Hatquest, both sit comfortably under 10k words each with Libraryquest, Part 3, sitting right above that total (I think 11k~12k words per-part on average might be the ideal balance for me, but I'm not 100% sure on that yet)
- Part 4 is close to 6k words longer than Part 2, the previous second-longest entry (Orbquest and Shopquest respectively)
- it can be argued that, of the completed and archived entries so far, Part 5 and Part 2 have had the highest concentrations of Renko doing imminently-relevant "true plot" things compared to incidents or interactions that could have otherwise existed in as much isolation as Part 1

HOWEVER, with the recent inception of Part 6 (the current story):

- Rabbitquest has Orbquest beaten by close to 2k more words
- combining the contents of Hatquest with everything that would've been more relevant to it from this part, as you've suggested, would've theoretically made it nearly 19K words long (the new longest part) and left the rest of Rabbitquest sitting at just under 10k words
- this current entry is focused far more on the closure of a few scattered points that have all been building up in the overall story so far, rather than Renko squarely going through 100% new experiences like something like Libraryquest, and this is mostly due to the fact that (big spoiler for the pacing of the story ahead, uncover at your own discretion:) the closure of this current arc will mark Renko finally making it past the True half-way point in her story
And all this isn't even to account for the smaller things like what pressure I felt to not intrude much with Part 6 when it was being hosted off-site for instance. Hatquest and Rabbitquest were meant to be inherently intertwined from their inception though perhaps there could have been something to finding that better balance between them after all.
>You could've given Sumi more of a reveal.
Huh, figured her using her specific nickname would've been enough for those who have read enough post-2014 Kourindou but I hadn't realized it could've been more eventful.
>spoiler 1
Nonsense, the heart and soul of doing any story like this in real-time is getting a chance to hear where things could be reigned-in better from a different pair of eyes. By all means, if I start bleeding too much of myself into this and am no longer treading that fine line successfully then please let me know so action can hopefully be taken. As much as I like doing things for fun, part of me doing this is also trying to rightfully give back to (at least a small part of) /jp/ itself in a way.
>>50136884
>Is that you putting yourself in Renko's shoes, or has to do with the way you think about Gensokyo?
Both actually! Picture very much related, I do personally believe that the Bamboo Forest would have been one of the first major geographical locations to have been established there pre-barrier, besides the mountains themselves, but Renko has also heard plenty of firsthand testimony from Merry over visiting the place on multiple locations and could even have the live shoot she brought back once as proof still. The fact it seems to have been a locus for smaller but still noteworthy goings-on at least as long as Tewi has been alive for just feels like it'd be obvious enough to Renko as well, or it'd at least be a decent instinct to go off of.

Anyways, these next posts will obviously be the final additions I'll be able to give to this thread but I was thinking of closing out this entry with tomorrow night's posts in the current /jp/ Original Writings thread. I have plans to ask about that there after this, but how would you all feel about it?

The terrain itself ought to have been smooth enough, but there were many patches of bamboo this deep in the forest that were too thick to cut your way through in any capacity. Kagerou was no stranger to mentally mapping-out shortcuts around here when she needed to and tonight was no exception. As long as they could keep snaking their way forward without getting separated then she'd be able to get her human companion to Eientei in under 10 minutes or less. And fortunately so at that since, by Kagerou's own estimations through experience, that's just about all the time they had before she wouldn't be able to resist The Call.
Meanwhile, just behind the beast girl, Renko carried on ahead with the assurance that her long journey of hat recovery was finally nearing its closing moments. She rifled through her handbag to pull out one of those smaller potion bottles, needing to both refresh herself and celebrate, only to unexpectedly run her fingers over a bottle that had retained its original label. Said bottle was immediately pulled out for inspection as they continued to walk, the Physicist running a thumb over the simple bit of masking tape stuck to the glass.

The only thing printed onto the label was a crudely-drawn image of some kind of cute animal face with a question mark next to it. What the heck was this supposed to be, some kind of animal disguise spell..? She filed the bottle away with the rest again with a shrug before downing another properly unlabeled mixture.

A Mansion of Vampires and now a Forest with its very own Wolfwoman...maybe for her next sidetracked quest she could search out the nearest Pharaoh's Tomb or Zombie Graveyard too. It was one thing for both the inherently numinous And folklore-accurate creatures to be categorized in similar circles, but to be within a space that contained equal parts of not only both but creatures from more modern fiction-adjacent groups as well would've been enough to leave any proper historical 'realist' of Renko's time completely paralyzed. And these people were living that life every single day!
"So, if it's alright for me to ask, are these full moon nights always an involuntary sort of deal for you, or..?"
"I believe it may be along those lines for those who were cursed to be this way, but I came into the world with Lycan blood already in me. For most normal full moons, it is something I'm able to largely control. Though there are always nights that are part of the exceptions...and those can be hard to fully remember at times."
There was a palpable level of regret behind those words through her cadence, though, over what exactly, Renko could not tell. Given the fact she isn't a "savage", the college girl was willing to bet it was simply over more unwarranted and shame-driven guilt. There were times when she's been embarrassed in public on occasion for this or that reason others would inform her over, sure, but it was still important to remain confident in yourself through all that.
That being said, it wasn't as if Renko was convinced that sort of progress was beyond Kagerou's capabilities.

Their footsteps felt heavy in the silent grass as Renko was led closer to her destination, the girl noticing that Kagerou had begun to take much wider steps than her and was walking with a very peculiarly-bouncy haunch to her stance. She looked down to find that the beast girl had begun instinctually rising herself onto the balls of her feet as she stood, especially noticeable now while Kagerou had been stopped to ensure they were about to pass the final landmark.
"Everything alright so far?"
"Yes, don't worry. I-It won't be much f-farther t-to t-th-oh-Ohhh..!"
She gasped as her whole body began to seize, arching her head low and falling to her knees with a heavy thud while clutching the sides of her torso tightly. Renko rushed over to her side only to be bombarded by heat radiating from Kagerou's body from mere inches away. The Werewolf's ragged breathing was heavy, subtle pops and crackles sounding out from her bones & ligaments while Renko could only watch as her frame seemed to creep further and further up a few millimeters at a time. The college girl really didn't know what to do, but was starting to realize why nights like these for Kagerou likely were better spent in private after all...
The Youkai girl involuntarily arched her back as she shivered, rows of gleaming fangs pressed tightly together in mild anguish, and forced Renko to acknowledge the fact that the chest under this woman's dress was no longer the simple, modest size it had once claimed earlier. Her own cheeks went red at the highly informal sight, though Kagerou's fresh frame of taught pale skin reflected the shine of what Renko then realized was the uncovered moon almost directly above them. The stars were finally starting to gradually fill in the empty space of the night sky but the view wouldn't be enjoyed for long before Renko's attentions were brought back to her current compatriot.

The beast girl slammed both sore palms to the ground with a start, panting aggressively while digging her strong claws into the cool dirt, and did a full body flex-stretch in that same position that quite literally popped all four limbs of hers another few inches beyond her dress. Fur was creeping over her shoulders and the back of her hands in full as a suspicious looking lump suddenly began to twitch and flick its way through her dress at the base of her spine above her widened hips. Renko was nearly ready to ask if the woman needed any kind of help before the sound of tearing fabric caused Kagerou to let out another broken wail. An incredibly bushy tail popped out of the back of her dress with all the force of an unused party popper before the beast girl collapsed breathlessly onto her cushioned front.

The clouds drifted in front of the moon's luminescent shine once more, though both girls were instilled with the worry that all it would take now was one more moment of brightness again for Kagerou to completely lose herself.

"Kagerou!! Are you still able to stand? Can you hear me?? Does it...a-are you...did that...hurt..?"
When Kagerou opened her now raw, scratchy maw to speak again, sneezing twice as she felt the sinuses under her face preparing for a major readjustment, the tone of voice she spoke with was just a bit lower and her cadence had become just a bit more serious.
"It's nothing...I can't handle...or don't know h-how to deal with. Damnit, I just had that hole sewn up..."
She rose to stand alongside Renko once more only to end up now towering over the girl by at least a foot and a half, her vertical posture noticeably unnatural in the wake of the developing muscles in her hind legs.
"Like I just told you, I'm Fine."
Even the most recognizable of her distinctly human-like proportions were beginning to be lost under the encroaching noise of the Beast, but at least her face hadn't changed too badly just yet. Aside from maybe sporting a little more definition anyways. She grunted to Renko and gestured her forward with claws that seemed tailor-made for gouging through flesh before they continued their journey. The Physicist decided to keep her mouth shut from there until they reached the clinic, letting the dull thud of Kagerou's slow footsteps and occasional grunts fill the silence instead.
It wasn't long from there before more light began to shine their way through the stalks, though this illumination had finally started appearing in front of them for a change.

"Is that..?"

The two crossed over another small clearing before coming to rest beside the edge of an ancient fence, staring down a long and cleared pathway that led right to the enclosed estate of who Renko could've easily otherwise assumed to be an appreciator of traditionalist Chinese architecture.
"Mmm. There it is, the Eternal Manor of Princess Kaguya."

"Finally! Thank you so m—wait...Princess Kaguya? As in The Legend of Princess Kaguya?"
"There's a Legend about her..?"
A few beats go by before Renko clears her subconscious and decides to file away that anecdote for when she'll actually need it.
"A-Anyways...thank you Kagerou, from the bottom of my heart. I know it may not have been a good night to do this for you, but..."
The Werewolf hunches down in front of the Physicist and places a heavy but endearing paw on her shoulder, the last few patches of naked flesh on it nearly completely grown over. Her eyes almost seemed to glow and shine with the red of her irises through the dark, though Renko could easily tell that it was still her behind those pupils after all.
"I'm more than happy to have been able to do this for you Miss Usami, you'd obviously go to great lengths for what's important to you no matter what and I can respect what you've been able to live through thus far while staying so steadfast."
She carefully takes Renko's hands between the loose proto-padding of her forefinger and thumb and shakes it respectfully, the college girl returning the gesture by getting a grip over as much of the beast girl's digits as she could.
"Please don't hesitate to join us for a chat if you ever find me with my friends by the Misty Lake~!"
"Sure! Maybe I'll even catch you on my way out of here again when all is said and done, huh?"
"Eheh...yeah, Right..."
Even Renko figured that spotting her again after this was a likely longshot at best, but maybe getting to know so many people around the Valley while she was still here wasn't so bad after all. Renko only broke away out of courtesy from finally noticing how hard Kagerou's new tail was wagging from the gesture, blush painting both girl's cheeks before they turned their separate ways at last.
It wasn't every night that Kagerou was willing to say how much she enjoyed meeting someone new, especially during nights like these, but she knew that she'd be able to hold on to her memories of assisting Renko Usami during her time of need for a very long time indeed.

Now to simply resolve the matter of letting nature take its course as smoothly as it could from here...

Renko continued to slowly make her way down the pathway towards Eientei with all the muted tension of a guilty delinquent being sent to the Dean's office, but what did she really have to worry about anyways? There was the one who actually had her hat, the purple-headed rabbit girl in that suit, but was she the inherently dangerous type just because she could run fast and has a set of grubby fingers on her? She /did/ have that table full of realistic-looking weaponry...
Then there was the matter of that Kaguya lady, supposed Princess to the Pure Lands of the Lunar surface, having apparently spent the better part of the past 1,600 years or so sequestered away inside some secret metaphysical storehouse for the scientifically abnormal. If it really is the famed Princess of legend in there, how would Renko be able to compete with the intellect and planning of someone who's lived far more than even Ten times the life she ever will? Did she have staff to cater to her every whim in this place? Do people here still know that she's technically an Alien??
And what of that Doctor Yagokoro that Kosuzu had mentioned who must've run her clinic out of this location, would she end up as a problem for the Physicist too? She was going to return that medicine Marisa had stolen, surely she'd be able to appreciate that much! And that same Doctor sharing a surname with the great Kami of Wisdom and Intelligence surely had to be a coincidence as well, right..? /Right??/

Renko reached out her free hand towards the fence on her right to support herself after suddenly growing slightly dizzy during all this consideration. She almost considered pulling out yet another vitality elixir for this when something else close-by finally caught her attention. Something she hadn't expected to hear in a place like this...

...

...Chanting...it was chanting! There was some small group of girls nearby all idly singing together at night, but why??
'The First Strike is for Lord Daikoku~...'

There was something else she could make out as she began to grow closer again, that being the muted rhythmic pounding of something heavy and wooden that marked the pace of their verses.
'The Second Strike is for Lord Daikoku~...'

There were definitely a few scattered girls out front that had to be responsible for this, and it wasn't until Renko noticed that practically every single one had the long ears of a bunny rabbit that she finally connected the dots.
'And for All of the One Hundred-and-Eighty Children, we'll keep Pounding Mochi, Ha! Let's Pound Mochi~...'

Of course! It was a mansion for Moon People so all its staff members had to be a bunch of candy-making Bunny Girls! Though, thankfully, these girls were all dressed incredibly modestly for the job.
She crept up flush against the fence around the property and poked her head past the corner of the entrance to watch as maybe ten or twenty pairs of rabbits around the place all sung in unison as they continued to pound raw mochi forevermore. The mochi balls made here had to have been some kind of delicacy with how many experts on the craft were hopefully working behind the sce—
"Hey! What do ya think you're doing snoopin' around a place like this at night?"
Renko spun around with a wildly unnecessary offensive stance at the sound of the sudden voice, turning to expect some kind of intimidating body guard-esque figure looming over her only to be greeted by nothing. It wasn't until she angled her head down slightly that Renko found the true source of this confrontation, a smaller-statured rabbit girl than the rest wearing a childish carrot pendant with incredibly fluffy, frazzled black hair. The baby-pink shade of her dress betrayed the annoyed pout she was currently sporting towards this expected interloper, though she still waited for Renko to give her futile response all the same.
"U-Uh-I-Uhm-I'mnotdoinganything! I'm just here because, well, I...t-the Doctor—"
"I know why you're here Miss Butterfingers! We all do. Reisen found that hat 'a yours and now you're here to take it back, right?"
"You've...known why I was coming? But then why—"
"Follow me." The Little Hare turns towards the entrance to lead Renko inside.
"Hey, hang on a second! If everyone here knew about it then why not just—"
"(SIGH), Hoooo Boy. Look Kid, you wanna mess around in a place ya don't fully understand? Wanna see all there is to see and do all there is to do while managing to keep that Big Head on yer shoulders? Then learn how to Do what you're Told when the people who actually DO know what they're doing tell ya how t'do it! Now c'mon, the Masters of Eientei are waiting."
The small Youkai continued to walk inside without looking back, knowing Renko really had no choice as the girl simply stood there in appalled shock until she realized all the other bunny girls had stopped their mochi pounding just to rubberneck.

It was times like these she truly appreciated having one of her hats around to pull down over herself...but she continued on behind her new guide without much more of a fuss. Everyone returned to their previous duties once the front door had fully shut itself again.

The atmosphere within the building itself was incredibly tranquil in spite of the underlying circumstances, a cool breeze passing through from outside and the interior décor matching what little Renko had seen just last night, though the manor's extensive hallways provided little indication of what exactly was where. Was something like that by design, perhaps? Seemed counter-intuitive towards the potential patients passing through here but that was beside the current point. Aside from the echo of their footsteps against the mahogany hardwood below, everything remained as quiet as ever. Like a single day could pass by inside while an eternity continues out beyond those walls...

"Alright, just through here then Usami." The Little Hare stopped next to what was apparently a door that really just looked like the rest of the hallway, but waited for Renko to be the one to unceremoniously open it herself.

Her first impression of what she saw within had initially been that this apparent meeting space was fairly simple, though this proved to be deceptively so after she came to realize that everyone here really had been spending who knows how long waiting for her to show up...
Inside the space sat two individuals calmly situated around an incredibly cozy looking kotatsu off to the left, a younger-looking black-haired lady clad in pink that must've been the Princess and an older-looking more formal woman wearing a red & blue ensemble that was no-doubt the Doctor of Eientei's Clinic. The Doctor had remained where she was, sipping tea on the side facing the door, while her associate, sat to the left, rose from her previous sleepy stupor with a yawn and lazily cupped her face in the palms of her hands as she stared at the Physicist. It wasn't until the former Lunarian Sage had rightly finished her drink that she'd even bothered to open her eyes and properly greet Renko face-to-face.

"Renko Usami, young student from the Outside World and distant ancestor to Sumireko of the same family lineage, Welcome. I trust you'll find that Miss Tewi has seen to you as she's needed."
"Does that mean I'm done here now?"
"Yes Tewi, you may be excused."
"Tewi Tewi! Have you seen Reisen around? You should tell her that her biggest fan has finally come asking for her Just Dues, hehehe~"
"I dunno, I guess I'll let her know if I see her but you know how she's been during Festival Nights and stuff lately."
"Quite so. We were all surprised to once again be in a position of potentially furthering the Lunar Capital's ends, though Reimu and Marisa ended up executing what we needed them to with great success regardless in the end. Did they not?"
In truth, Tewi Inaba really could care less over whatever trouble those moonies seemed to have gotten themselves in not too long ago. Just as long as things could still continue on as they ever did in the end and the sun would rise once more the next day, then life would still be plenty of fun to live through for her. She left everyone else to the more serious business at-hand with nothing more than a shrug and a smug smirk, closing the door behind her as Renko properly stepped inside.

"Please, set your belongings down where you'd like to and sit with us. It's our understanding that you've taken great lengths to ensure your arrival this eve of the Festival, and we have taken special preparations in-kind out of our own given courtesy."
"Does that have anything to do with all the mochi-pounding going on outside right now..?" Renko remains internally nervous but, after a moment, takes her current Host's offer up as to not escalate things too rapidly and sits herself opposite the Princess.
"What Eirin is trying to say is that those Inabas shouldn't be bothering you while you're here and we've cleared our schedule tonight to make sure we can still talk to you."
"R-Right, of course..."
"I would hate to give you the impression that we've simply orchestrated all this to ensnare you within some form of unnecessary ploy. It does one well to ensure your actions have been properly considered from all angles as a young woman of your caliber would surely understand and, on that subject, I do feel the need to apologize for neglecting to formally address ourselves on your behalf."
"Oh, that's really alright. I believe I'm already somewhat familiar with your associate, Princess...Kaguya?"
"Ohoh~! What a delight! When was the last time we've had a visitor who already knew of my infamy, Eirin?"
"May I also remind you, Kaguya, that each individual who /has/ arrived on such foreknowledge in the past has always been of the Rambunctious sort in one form or another Without Fail."
"Why do you think I was so excited to meet this girl~?"
Anonymous No.50139315

"Duly Noted, but yes, Miss Usami. That would be Kaguya Houraisan, the one you already know of from the eponymous Tale of Princess Kaguya. I am Dr. Eirin Yagokoro and we have been living together here in Eientei for well over a thousand years. Once more, I humbly welcome you within these walls."
"Oh don't be so stuffy, Eirin. I've heard that more modern young people from the Outside World like Renko actually /do/ know how to enjoy themselves, isn't that right?"
"Well maybe life is like that for some girls my age, sure, but I'll have you know that I am currently a Proud heavily-dedicated Physics undergraduate and know how to seriously handle myself around a drink or two! Mostly."
Kaguya made sure to keep eye contact with Renko as she spoke even when the meaning of her words ended up lost on the Princess for a moment, something she had gotten in extremely good habit of after spending so much time around a person like Eirin.
"Under...Graduate..?"
"The implication is that Renko is currently training under one or more specialized mentors through the given framework of the more modern socio-economic construct of 'college', much like a generalized trade school to prepare the ever-coming generations ahead. Specifically under modern understandings of the mathematics and science behind Physics. Quite the worthy set of subjects to dedicate yourself to indeed."
Renko couldn't help but let her defenses falter a bit after Eirin finished speaking, especially since it was incredibly obvious to the college girl that whatever total sum of knowledge this Doctor must've possessed had to vastly outpace even the most highly-skilled professors of her campus.
"You bookworms are all the same to me, but you at least know how to wear your confidence well!"
"Uh...thank you both I suppose. That would far more accurately describe the real reason for my arrival into Gensokyo, I just...seemed to have accidentally made a small name for myself out of sheer momentum I guess."
"The Great Hakurei Barrier has been constructed in such a way as to allow for the internal preservation of the ephemeral or otherwise esoteric while actively working as an external filter for the exoteric, though this distinction has, frankly, been unique to the Valley for many eons longer than the mere 1.4 centuries the Barrier itself has existed for. This small pocket of Earth, like many others around the planet, has an easily-noticeable penchant for naturally gathering together & attracting the otherwise abnormal. This can be seen by anyone with enough eyes and experiences over local history, but even that would be a disservice towards the experiences of those who have Lived through such history."
Renko was hanging on to every word like she'd just walked in on a symposium over everything she's been trying to prove these past four years.
"Right! That's Exactly Right..! So then what you're saying is essentially along the lines of...I was somehow 'abnormal' enough for the Barrier's constitution to allow me through its filters?"
"Were the Barrier to be little more than a singular, unaltered force independent of outer-influence since its inception then, yes, I might just corroborate such a hypothesis. However, like most things in life, the answer is simply more complicated than that."
"What do you mean..? From what I've been able to surmise so far, the quantum field around this Valley is anchored to multiple key physical locations corresponding to gaps within our current plane of existence where fundamental rules of Geometry collide with the active fluctuation and manipulation of Probability itself. While flawed in it's own regard, the current theorems of Super-Unified Physics may also suggest that—"

"I beg your pardon, but, 'Super-Unified' Physics..? May I ask what you believe the current date to be?"
"Oh, uhh let's see here...I left for the station on Tuesday and had made it to Nagano by dusk, I lost a full day after being attacked by that Youkai..."
Her eyes were shut closed in contemplation for no more than a few seconds before she calmly gave her answer with full confidence.
"October 6th, Year 2154 of the Common Era. Why?"

"Hmph, as I suspected. Miss Usami, from your position, the Great Hakurei Barrier has remained in operation for well over 250 years."
"But...you said the Barrier's only been around for...so I really Am in The Past?? You're telling me I've actually been transported to, oh god...the Year 2025?!"
"What an arbitrary number, some of the oldest peoples on this planet had histories spanning far beyond even that."
"I know, You're right..! But why Me? Why have /I/ been shunted back by an entire century while my distant ancestor is out there talking about her high school years??"
"That's just it, Miss Renko. Your vast temporal displacement and congruous synchronization with what we understand as 'current events', while obviously remaining apart of a statistically-improbable outlier group, certainly has Not been unprecedented within this Valley."

>As much as I like doing things for fun, part of me doing this is also trying to rightfully give back to (at least a small part of) /jp/ itself in a way.
If that's what you wish...I think if someone went to Gensokyo, they would experience it as being pretty empty, since youkai, being something in between eccentric humans and wild animals, would prefer to observe someone rather than directly interact with them. I think this is doubly true for the Bamboo Forest, I imagine you could trod thru it for hours on end without meeting anyone. That being said, I understand a story about Renko walking thru an empty forest for hours wouldn't quite be the peak of entertainment(although I actually think it could work), and, of course, you want 2hus you like to be part of the storywhich is actually a problem with a lot of fanworks, especially Hifuu ones, yours is one of the less egregious examples but when a lot of these low-probability occurrences start being chained together, and become the driving force of the story, they start to stretch credulity. The biggest issue is that this isn't even necessary, Renko is spirited enough to, of her own volition, want to see everything there is to see in Gensokyo. There is also the problem with Renko always going to and fro all the time, which I feel is a waste, since you can write some very beautiful place descriptions.

Thing is, while Renko lives in a time dominated by types of drinks that can't get you drunk, she still has access, and ,we are lead to believe, interest in contemporary types of alcohol. On the other hand, Gensokyo's pre-industrial production methods leave them with lower ABV drinks. This means Renko has a chance!

Since we talked about SSR earlier, Renko, in that comic's first few panels, looked a lot like Chito, but without the glasses.
>but I'm not crazy over how most drinks taste either
I can't say I recommend drinking alcohol, but there are a few drinks that do taste really good even on their own, such as, but not exclusively, any cream whiskey, wheat beer, or, and I'm being completely honest, Guinness or Asahi, although, again, acquired taste.
