I found this cool piece of Kana art on tumblr a while back but I'm unsure if I saved it in its full resolution on account of tumblr making that process annoying.
It's also pretty funny how she's drawn with a stop sign so often, but doesn't even wield it in-game. It was from ZUN's comment from his homepage. I kind of want to see the pre-PoDD illustrations of her he's mentioned drawing.

Could still be interesting, if only because she was made to fit her theme rather than the other way around. That's not a common constraint in this series, and it'd be interesting to know how strongly it informed his decisions

Kana came from ZUN sketching a western looking girl with a road sign that eventually turned into Kana because ZUN wanted to use Vanishing Dream for a character in PoDD after scrapping it for Yumemi's theme

Not really, a lot of pc98s are just borrowed from takemoto izumi (at least visually anyway), so it's easy to determine, haha. By the way, Kana's design is based on salada from loopsalada (picrel). IIRC he says it in th3's omake. Th3's omake is great overall, because it has a pretty thorough list of references.

I do know PoDD specially is basically a love letter to Izumi Takemoto

She's the mentally unstable ghost that drinks your pepsi, carries road signs, and calls you a weirdo; it'd be weird if she didn't show in random places. Just ignore the part in PoDD where Yumemi had to use occult magic (somehow not magic?) to move Kana to the Hakurei shrine.

I'm unfortunately not as familiar with Izumi as I'd like to be. Who were Kotohime, Chiyuri, and Rikako based on?

I forgot about the SMT influence in PC-98 Touhou for a moment there. Yumemi could probably simulate occult rituals through code and programs like how the Demon Summoning Program worked in SMT which let the protagonists, who can't use magic normally, summon and fuse demons. I might be reading too deep into this but the idea of Yumemi being like an SMT hero is funny to me.

Doesn't help that Megaten 2's Explorer theme very clearly had an influence on Strawberry Crisis!! (and Nuclear Fusion later on)
