I read almost every single age game (except Chiyoren and Kichiku, didn't even know the latter one existed honestly) in production/release order so I can give you some insight. In strictly terms of the Muv-Luv universe, KimiNozo and Akane Maniax are worth reading for the connection. The original KimiIta is referenced but quite marginal so frankly it's optional but up to you. The various KimiNozo fandiscs/spinoffs are all optional strictly speaking (the Daikuuji one, Special Fan Disc, etc.) Off the top of my head, the KimiNozo Special Fan Disc does have a part that does a muv-luv parody which is pretty funny.

You can't choose during your first run. People say it's just luck and you can accidentally get True route on your first run, but I've only ever seen people get nodoby getting shot, so I have serious doubt whether it's luck or just set 1st route.
Anyway, once you get an ending you will get the choice to choose fail or success, and you can either play around doing whatever you want, or if you want true ending flags -> 成功->失敗->成功->成功->成功
Anyway, Axanael is a really bad choice for a first VN, that guy who made the old guide recommending it was insane. Besides the most convoluted UI and mechanics, you're also missing all the references for previous nitro+ games

Any more info on the guy who recommended it? I'm having a great time reading it so far even without really knowing most of the references and the sentences aren't super tough to read. The main mechanic I was just kind of confused on. The only regret not reading is this later is that I don't fully get all of the SuMaGa references (Mizuha, that one Chiaki chapter, etc.).

I don't know him, I just guessed you're probably playing it because you saw it in the guide because it was my first VN as well, and I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I had some experience with Nitro+ VNs and VNs in general, and was a bit more comfortable with Japanese. Although in my case, it was 10 years ago, it was my first VN ever, I never even read English ones and I didn't have text extracting tools and AI translating them, I was just using good old "draw kanji I can't read in google translate" method, so maybe it's better for kids these days!

Yeah VN text extracting and general Japanese learning tools have come a long way. Textractor automatically hooks on most Nitro+ VNs and you can have all the text output on to a browser window. From there if there's anything I don't get I can just hoover, and add it to anki if the frequency is low enough (>10000 JPDB). The only thing I get lost on sometimes is Sakura's slang and Nouko only speaking in kana. I'm sure I'd probably appreciate the story more if I knew more Japanese, but I have to read Japanese to know more Japanese and I'd burn out fast if I only read shitty Nukige or SOL VNs to train. You gotta start somewhere.

drama wasn't as forced as Haruka's route, and it's the only route where I can forgive our pathetic MC in the end. In the pre-epilogue he got a new job which is pretty much convenient though.
The afterstory made me feel warmer to this weakling couple, but the side conflict is being inconsistent to the main story so 8/10

had some similarities with Mitsuki's but the writing is so bland. the bad ends? lol. the afterstory had a forced "do you even love me" ahh drama and MC became a hetare AGAIN so 4/10

MC isn't a pathetic anymore, he's evolved into a real trash. His relationship with Mitsuki and Shinji is getting worse yet he's easily forgiven by everyone, he also manipulated everyone to be in happy time just like 3 years ago. Somehow the original bad end (not those 2 infamous endings) feels more natural than true end. I don't think her route needs an afterstory but here we go, haruka got a great character regression to create more drama. 3/10

I didn't really save many voice lines in LLJ. I think the seiyuu did a decent job, but none of the performances were really all that notable. I did like Kusuhara Yui as Miku though which is surprising since it's a similar performance as to the one she did in Aoi Tori and I didn't really like Mary's voice in that.

Finally beat Amakano 2 after doing Yuuhi's route for last and boy do I feel empty afterwards. Thankfully there's an FD that I'll read in few months time maybe. Idk if others feel the same way but I generally feel Amakano 2 to be shorter than what it should be or at least the routes feel shorter compared to Second Season. I guess that's why they add a new girl for the FD though I expect her route to be longer than anyone since she wasn't in the original game.

Finished Silverio Ragnarok, Cecil's route.
This was terrible, even though I had zero expectations from it.
How skippable is Angelica's route? Does it bring anything important to the story? I've figured out the "mystery" around Ch2 and since there was practically zero relevant information regarding Misaki/Ragna in Cecil's route that I didn't already know, I think I might spare myself the suffering of reading this absolute mediocrity and head straight for the true route, seems at least it gets some praise.

Frankly speaking, I don't know why this game even exists, Trinity's ending was more than perfect actually no, it lacked CG of Vendetta hand-in-hand with Zephyr.

My biggest issue with the game are the bland, boring, hollow characters. Ragna, the MC, barely got any characterization. The bonds with the heroines are non-existent, and they, too, have barely any character or meaningful interactions with the MC. And I thought characters in Trinity sucked compared to Vendetta...

Again, I have finished only one route, but I doubt it will somehow get magically better. The character design sucks, most men look like children. The OST, besides Ragna's theme, is forgettable.

I've seen people rate Ragnarok higher than the earlier games which is pretty bizarre to me since it's very clearly a huge downgrade in every way. The way it splits up words is kind of weird and chooses a single arbitrary reading of each that doesn't fit with the actual context and utterly bizarre sense choices like "lux" for "ルックス".

Did you try the alsa wine driver and switching your system's audio to purely alsa? I've only had shit problems with pulse which is why I mentioned it. There's also pipewire if you want to try it which used to work for me but one day it started distorting all of my audio for no reason so I stopped bothering with it.

Anon, I wrote the reasons why in my post. The VN had an incredibly troubled development and only barely managed to release AFTER the company went bankrupt, it's clearly horribly rushed and unfinished. The writer can write the best script in the world, but if he finds out the company is going bankrupt and they have to shrink the game down by 70% because they don't have the budget for all the CGs and voiced lines the original script requires, there's only so much the writer can do. VNs are team projects much closer to movies or TV shows or games than actual books. There's only so much the writer can do.
