Ideally you want to be able to communicate with as little delay as possible, and convey parts of yourself that would otherwise get lost in translation by deliberately choosing the words you say and manner in which you say them rather than hoping the machine is able to somehow replicate it for you.

In most cases this probably doesn't matter. But it really depends on if you want to use the language as a means of basic understanding or actual communication.

I went to Japan a bit ago, it was pretty cool. I haven't practiced Japanese in over a year but talking with people there a lot of it started coming back to me. Anyway, I also decided that while chinks are bug people the japs are also soulless automatons once they enter the workforce.
