Nah it was based on project sabre. China got their (then) go-to plane sorted in J-8II.

Pakistan saw project sabre, took a liking on it but wanted similar programme based on F-7PG as they were looking at immediate replacement of F-6 and eventual replacement of both F-7P and F-7PG

You could see F-7PG influence in JF-17 especially the double delta wing design and overall fuselage shape. Like J-8II, they redesign the air intake so they could mount an actual radar, a chinese copy of APG-66

It was 50/50. Pakistan was the one that initiated the program, designed the requirements, put up the funds and handled a lot of the flight testing. China matched the funds and used their infrastructure/manufacturing base to make the first few prototypes.

Pakistan supposedly makes around ~60% locally, including the radar and avionics, although they're based on Chinese designs.

I would definitely still call the FC-1 a Chinese design made for Pakistan though. It's fascinating how Pakistan has been slowing building up to developing the JF-17 through various major upgrade projects to its Mirage fleet. In contrast, look at the complete mess that is HAL in India which has astronomically more funding, time, experience and manpower than the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex but have been completely unable to match a much smaller country's aviation industry capabilities

Half of the Azerbaijani population is atheist/agnostic. Iraqi KRG and Azerbaijan both sell oil to Israel. Ramzan Kadyrov has political and business ties to Israel too. Several Muslim-majority countries spanning Central Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa have "good" relations with Israel, at least on the state level, buy Israeli arms and sell it energy and minerals. Uzbekistan just signed a grain deal with Israel a few years ago.

Egypt and Jordan are both guard dogs of Israel, and collectively make up the top three recipients of US foreign-aid. Bahrain, UAE and Morocco are also formally allied with Israel. KSA also has a secret alliance with Israel.

They've been working on an economic corridor since at least 2017, which was formally announced at the G20 summit in India in September 2023. India and Greece are both part of this ridiculous "IMEC" plan. They all use Israeli surveillance software and spyware. It's also what got Khashoggi murdered by KSA, and got Morocco using it to spy on Macron himself.

These alliances go back decades. Morocco since the 1960s. Jordan and Egypt since the 1970s. UAE and KSA since at least the 1990s or earlier. Morocco proactively sent 100K Sephardic Jews to Israel in the early-1960s and then passed info from Arab League meetings which led to Israel's victory in the 1967 war. Egypt and Gaddafi's Libya even fought a brief war in 1977 over the former's partnership with Israel.

KSA and Israel worked together to kill PIJ top leader Fathi Shaqaqi in 1995. UAE and Israel worked together to kill Hamas senior leader Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in 2010. UAE and KSA actively fund many pro-Israel think tanks, media outlets and parties.

A group of specialist personnel from the Azerbaijani Air Force successfully completed a comprehensive training program conducted in Pakistan.

The personnel receiving training are thought to be pilots and technical support personnel of the JF-17 Thunder Block III fighter jets, which Azerbaijan decided to procure in February 2024.

Deliveries could begin this year
Azerbaijan has initially ordered 16 JF-17C/D Block III fighter jets as part of its agreement with Pakistan. This $1.6 billion contract includes aircraft as well as support elements such as ammunition, ground systems and personnel training.

First deliveries are expected to begin in mid-2025, with the entire order to be completed by the end of 2027.

>costing US$4.6 billion in total, which is even higher than what had been previously reported at US$4.2 billion last month.
At first I was going to say you shouldn't put too much weight on the precise numbers reported, either for the amount of units or the cost, but then I came across this below. I still wouldn't put too much weight on the precise numbers yet other than being "above $4 billion, 40–50 units, and more than just buying the jets".

https://turdef.com/article/pakistan-confirms-inking-of-deal-with-azerbaijan-for-jf-17
> Acquisition of JF-17 Block III has been on the table for Azerbaijan, which seeks to modernise its fighter fleet that currently consists of ex-USSR aircraft like MiG-29 and Su-25. Pakistani Government confirmed the inking of a deal which includes 40 fighters at a cost of $2 billion, which indicates an average unit cost of $50 million.
> The statement added that a defence agreement worth $4.6 billion was signed between the two countries without details. Considering the scale, weaponry for the new fighter might be a mere part of this.

> Compared to MiG-29, considerably larger fighters, JF-17 Block III will bring advantages to Azerbaijan on a new level thanks to modern sensor and weaponry options. There are both political and technical reasons for Azerbaijan’s pick ending up as JF-17.
> Azerbaijan’s options were limited as the solution had to arrive swiftly, which points out to a country that would provide the smoothest process for negotiations. European countries and the U.S. can not be considered ideal for Azerbaijan due to the anti-Azerbaijan diaspora presence in the senates/parliaments, while Russia has its hands full with the Russo-Ukrainian War.
> In technical terms, JF-17 Block III can be likened to the Swedish Gripen E/F in philosophy, which focuses on ease of maintenance and low operating/acquisition costs. This is important for Azerbaijan as it will be switching to a whole new interface for its fighter fleet.

Anonymous No.63801391 [Report] >>63801547
> Pakistan has more freedom on JF-17’s integration work compared to its fleet of J-10C fighters as one of the two developers. This is evidenced by the integration of Turkish ASELPOD targeting pod on the fighters. This might be taken a step further in Azerbaijan’s case, as Turkiye’s integration capabilities on foreign aircraft have been tested recently.
> Turkish Laçın modernisation package for Azerbaijan’s Su-25 attack aircraft sheds some light on possibilities with its use of the UBAS [Uçaktan Bağımsız Atış Sistemi / Aircraft Independent Firing System] aircraft-agnostic fire control system, which can allow the use of even sophisticated munitions like SOM-B1 in addition to guided bombs. Considering Pakistan’s position as a partner in JF-17 and no apparent objection from China to the integration of ASELPOD, Azerbaijani JF-17 Block IIIs using UBAS to access Turkish munitions is a possibility that should not be ruled out.

> includes cockpit modernisation with digital displays and a revamp of armament with Turkish munitions.
> LAÇIN modernisation has been divided into two phases, Merhale-1 and Merhale-2, with different levels of system integration.

> Merhale-1, as the basic phase, has added the UBAS (Aircraft-Independent Firing System) as a plug-and-play solution for the integration of KGK-82/83, TEBER-82 guided bombs, and SOM-B1 cruise missiles. As of July 30, 2024, the seventh aircraft has been delivered.
> Merhale-2 is more comprehensive, with a complete overhaul of avionics, including the cockpit, mission computer, radios, communication link, INS, and more. The PDR for the Merhale-2 standard was reviewed on May 23, 2024. Merhale-2 will add HGK GPS-guided bombs and SOM ŞAHİN cruise missiles to the armament.

[B] Mar 2025
> The tablet can be seen in the cockpit of an F-16 in a recent video showing a test launch of the domestically developed SOM-J standoff missile. The tablet is mounted on the Input Control Panel (ICP), which is located on the center console beneath the head-up display. The ICP is used to select weapons, navigation settings, and radio communications, among other functions. At the same time, the pilot has another tablet on their knee, something that has become increasingly common, augmenting the information available via the aircraft’s mission systems and helping eliminate cumbersome paper books in the cockpit.

> Turkey operates Block 30, 40, and 50 aircraft, it seems that the UBAS, currently at least, is restricted to the Block 40/50 jets that were modernized with the Common Configuration Implementation Program (CCIP) upgrade, which was completed in 2015.
> As well as tablets in the cockpit, Ukrainian aircraft are also using specialized pylons on which the Western-made weapons are carried.
> For Turkey, the situation is essentially reversed, with the problem being how to integrate new Turkish-made weapons onto older U.S.-made F-16s.

Turkish munitions plus Chinese munitions equal new logistic requirements for Azerbaijan used to older stuff from the Soviet Union.
This probably includes multiple batches of pilot training access within Pakistani facilities as well each lasting more than a year for new pilots from Azerbaijan.

$10,000 per flight hour × 300 flight hours × 60 pilots = $180,000,000
Assuming you need each batch of pilots to exceed how many fighter jets you have, just a few batches over two decades will easily surpass $1 billion for training alone on K-8 trainers and JF-17B dual seaters

what a load of BS

AzAF already uses turkish munitions and the JF-17 that they buy will be modified by the turks to launch their munitions (including short range AAM and BVR)

They're buying JF-17 to replace Mig-29 and the remaining unupgraded Su-25. Pilots who flown Mig-29 and Su-25 will transition to JF-17

AzAF's Super Mushak and L-39 are sufficient enough and they'll be getting Hurjet as well with remaining training gaps can be filled with sending the pilots to Turkey or Pakistan
