M4 appreciation thread
Some of you might remember I made 2 of these, you might not but basically I love the M4 and I know I'm not alone.
Once again I'm not fussed about actual M4s and derivatives as long as they are 14.5/10.3 and have direct impingement

Why does the UK in particular only use C8s? I get that they're virtually the same but I would've thought with the "special relationship" we'd the most likely to get American Colt M4s

The US might have its special relationship, but Canada was British for forever and only stopped being legally subordinate to the UK in 1982 so I imagine they're closer in some ways than the US is.
Also, I would guess that the C8 is so widespread in British forces because their special forces have had them for a while, so other units ended up going with what they know works. Their military is also small so it's not like they need a supplier with massive order capacity.

Is it actually possible in certain parts of America to get an actual military M4? Select fire, 14.5in etc (I know there's some funny laws about barrel length)

Afaik, money and time will be the biggest hurdle. Can use a FRT for a pseudo full-auto and save some cash as finding and getting a legal full-auto capable lower is prohibitively expensive. There's also the shady ways but I'm not familiar with them. Sub 16in barrel will require paper work and some money + waiting for approval iirc.

You can source a lot of the pieces if you look around like the RAS and GWOT period correct optics and lights and such. Hardest thing to get would be a real Milo lower. Uppers you can find FN barrels and β€œDogbone” forge uppers pretty easily.

The apocryphal explanation is that Colt offered them the newly minted M4 and said take it or leave it, while Diemaco was willing to make tweaks and changes to suit the buyers tastes. On one hand, that comes from Chris Bartocci, and he would not miss an opportunity to shit on Colt. On the other hand, Colt has a track record of arrogance and laziness losing them contracts so its entirely plausible.

>not really possible to obtain an exact military select fire model?
Real select fire M16A1/A2 can be had for about $20k on the low end to $40-50k on the high end depending on the condition and where you're buying from. Full auto pre-1986 Colt Sporters can be had anywhere from ~$13k to 20k.

"Real" M4 uppers are not rare (although not a lot of stores carry Colt stuff anymore) and aren't considered a firearm on their own without a lower.
Colt Keyhole and Square (random receiver markings on the upper) M4A1 uppers are identical to the issued military ones and aren't hard to find.

Yeah, you can get exactly identical parts made by the same manufacturer or even surplus parts for every single component except for the stripped lower receiver. IIRC Colt uppers are the exact same as military uppers while FN uppers are made with a different grade of Aluminum, but the practical and visual difference is literally nonexistent unless you're a turbo autist that runs around testing the composition of random pieces of metal.
>Is it the same for the M16?
It depends. A4s are easier to source 100% surplus or otherwise identical parts to build. Complete uppers or individual parts for older variants pop up every now and then but are fairly uncommon. There was a small batch of surplus M16A1 part kits sans lower receiver a while back, but those dried up.
Old Colts are around but they fetch increasingly high prices nowadays. NoDak Spud used to make retro ARs, and those guys got bought by PSA and currently make them under H&R, which has the TDPs for the M16 variants so those guns are functionally identical. Minus a couple details like the front sight post, but who gives a shit.

>Emtan MZ-4
They make both DI and piston versions of these, the latter of which are so different from the M4 they might as well be different guns.
Flip military and police use both of them, sometimes even within the same units for some inexplicable reason.

To me this meme seems at least partially facetious, with
>reliable after 40k rounds never cleaned
which is obviously wrong. The meme is also word salad.
>1.) what do they mean standardised ease of logistics?
Parts are completely interchangeable between guns, so if one gun needs a replacement part it can draw from a shared pool, instead of having to hand fit each component through modification or fabrication of a new one.
This line is pointless since this applies to almost all, if not every single military firearm made since at least WWII if not before.
>2.) how has it prevented WW3?
Hyperbole but killed shit tons of commies, including in successful counterinsurgencies and interventions that stopped or outright toppled leftist regimes as well as being a part of the non-Communist world's military deterrent to Communist aggression
>3.) what do they mean its reputation precedes it like an anthem?
Means what it sounds like. Do you happen to have autism?
>4.) what to they mean technical data package?
Use Google. I believe the implication of this line is that the TDP for the milspec AR-15/M16/M4 is well refined and proven to produce reliable guns, which is true.

Inferior enough to stop making non-free floated ARs for practical purposes (obviously excluding collection/cloning) but certainly not enough for militaries to get rid of their M4A1s and civilians to get rid of their M4gerys.
Between my Colt M4 clone and free floated lower and mid-tier ARs with identical barrels, the disadvantage in accuracy I've seen is minimal to nonexistent, like 0.5 MOA at most, if it's even that much.

No, for what your average rifleman is expected to do its more or less still peak performance for modern tech. Free floating matters more for the end of the effective range of the M4. Now, as other anons have said, there is no reason if you are building a new AR these days to NOT give it a free floated barrel and full rail. For people who've already got M4A1s there is little reason to swap them out. It makes way more sense to change the rails on them or chuck an ergo extension on them if you want more space/lighter rail, but those are usually saved for SOF guys who can actually make use of such an upgrade. For normal riflemen these things don't matter, you just need a good gun that shoots, which is the M4

>it sounds too complicated for me. like I'd have to line up two barrel sections and weld it together perfectly so a .22 bullet will go through as if it was always one piece?
Nope. The barrel is normal, it's just that the A2 flash hider is fixed in place. That way, the combined length of the 14.5 barrel and the muzzle device exceeds 16" and legally counts as continuous barrel over 16", and thus not an NFA item. You can buy barrels with this already done, or even complete FN or Colt uppers so you really don't need to do any work beyond replacing that one part if you don't want to do the process yourself.

Right but when you say that it just sounds needlessly condescending. Obviously I've heard the phrase "your/its reputation precedes you/it" but I couldn't tell how much weight the whole anthem simile was meant to add

I've come to the conclusion that it's no different to eastern bloc/developing countries using Zastava M70s or PM md. 63/65s instead of AKMs or Type 56s. Just that all the AR copies out there usually aren't AR-15s and America has remained the dominant supplier of such. So logically their allies would be perfectly eligible to receive American M16s/M4s but like how all the satellite states didn't go directly to Russia/China for AKs they chose not to go directly to America for ARs. But then again I suppose it's a different setup in the first place considering a lot of said satellite states made their own AKs, point being purchasing Canadian copies of AR-15s doesn't mean much and Canada used to be a huge supplier of Lee-Enfields, BRENs etc

Neither are great but you can't have nice things anymore. I'm honestly surprised to see a24 embrace these types of movies because it's completely off brand from what they used to do. I feel like we should encourage it because big budget slop really isn't doing it for me. It was an enjoyable film though and the premium audio theaters were the right choice. I also enjoyed that they brought me a mint at the end. That was unnecessary but appreciated.

If you look on imfdb it says it's based off a DDM4ISR but I feel like that's solely for sharing the same integral suppressor which doesn't feel right considering it's unsuppressed for 90% of missions (unless you go out of your way to in Ammu-Nation). Caring about the RAS mfg isn't even cloning autism, just KAC brand whores being brand whores, there are probably hundreds of thousands of M4s with RAS made by people other than KAC and it doesn't make them any less of an M4.
Anonymous No.63819535
>>63818942
Yes, KAC, if you check places like tacswap you can find them for around 200ish used. I literally just picked one up from there. As far as legit retailers they are all dried up rn, you'd have to wait for P+S or KAC to dropped another batch onto the market which who knows when that will happen as the US is currently selling a ton of M4s to a bunch of foreign countries so all the usual companies are busy fulfilling contracts
>>63819231
brandwhoring aside, I had a P+S RAS and foolishly sold it awhile back. I will say my KAC feels a lot nicer than the P+S I had which feels like it wasn't dehorned at all. It actually felt like a cheesegrater on my hands so I needed to put some kind of rail covers on them. The KAC on the other hand can be handled with no covers at all if I wanted to. Something to consider, although it may also be a total crapshoot

You're right, my bad, still closing in on 15 though.
Coolest gear I see in that picture is the cleaning rod.
Kyle Defoor used to always suggest keeping a sectional rod on the weapon as it was the fastest way to clear a stuck casing that could render a weapon useless in a fight instead of mortaring.
Cool to see the Marines also saw the utility of this on deployment.

I remember getting the tip from Kyle Lamb's book. It's something I got some comments about, but suddenly when somebody has a brass over bore jam one demonstration of having a rod ready shuts people up.
