Still cheap, unremarkable 1095. I'm sure they'll still be ~57 HRC, too (because 1095 gets brittle the harder you go). Other than that, it's a good move. I'm not saying every knife needs to be Magnacut or 3V, but if a cheap steel is absolutely required then almost every 1095 knife on the market would be better in 80CrV2. A knife in 80CrV2 at ~60 HRC is tougher and cuts longer than 1095 at ~57 HRC. For what I assume will be a price above $100 it's a shitty deal for a shitty steel - which really is too bad, since the design sans materials is good.

At least Kabar isn't TOPS or Busse levels of retarded. Imagine paying $300 for garbage steel in a mall ninja looking knife.

I've had recent success on the sharpmaker using the jdavis882 method in the second video. You hold it on the stone and go up and down. You just have to remember to do it equally on the other side because it will form a burr like a regular sharpening stone. I find it easier to keep the angle using this method. The edge comes out even, looking like a factory edge.

A knife in 80CrV2 at 64hrc is substantially tougher than 1095 at 57hrc. 1095 is trash.

But, by humid I meant dewy mornings and warm summer days after a rain. In Wisconsin. Not exactly Papua New Guinea conditions. Something else I don't know is why companies like ESEE choose 1095 for all the "jungle knife" shit they're always hyping over other cheap low-alloy steels offering better corrosion resistance.

Say hello to the scorpions and Mexicans for me.

Nope, I prefer scales that actually cover the grip of the knife, and some level of finger guard. Esee Xancudo, Architect AK3, Boker/Daily AK1, Brisa 70 or 80. No finger choils, or worse, handle scales that end short, like the Bradfords or the White River backpacker.

>is that the one made by sheffield in england?
yep
It's in stock now. The edges don't come sharp. I cleaned them up, but they're still like 90 degrees inclusive lol. I carefully worked on the tip and got that to a needle point; it sort of came to a square instead of a point. The whole thing is kind of wonky, actually. There's a gap between the blade and guard, and the blade is slightly canted off kilter from the guard (which is fixable is it's disassembled). The sheath design kind of sucks although mine fits in snug and the elastic band is also tight. It's not bad, really, just wonky. I thought it was cool that it's THE current Commando FS dagger with a NATO stock number. Fox knives makes a nicer one but it's $300 and the taper isn't as aggressive. The only reviews on that are Korean but it also has like 80 degree inclusive edges.

Fairbairn himself was known to express his dislike for the "cheapness" of the 3rd pattern. His books specified sharp edges. But if you look at any of the current 1st or 2nd patterns, they all also have the disclaimer: "edges don't come shaving sharp etc." I wonder if they are afraid to make them sharp being from England with the strange relationship they have with knives.
Despite it's quirks, I still think mine is neat-o and it was only $100.

Hey guys I'm trying to figure out something I see get asked a lot, and it was discussed a few threads ago but I've never really seen an answer that's satisfactory:
What is the best edc knife, and the best budget edc knife -- for self defense in a libshit state?
& What are some good EDC knives that would be decent in a pinch?
Requirements to be legal: 3.5" max with wiggle room for over-measuring, no fixed blades, no OTF, no daggers, no edgelord marketing.

IMO this is the criteria in order:
- Ergonomic grippy handle with some kind of swell or way to lock in the hand. Knife should be held in a hammer grip. Its vital that one can actually pull it out after one stabs something and equally important that it can't be dislodged from one's hands.
- Blade geometry: Thin-spined slicer type shapes, that look ideal for stabbing and puncturing. I've never seen slashing do anything in a knife fight.
- Lockout: Strength of the lockout is key here. Ergonomics and how fun it is to play with isn't as much.
- Deployment: Reliability of deployment is crucial. Single handed deployment is a huge bonus for knife vs knife fights if you're wearing a jacket and train to utilize, and less important if not. I don't think speed of deployment matters very much -- most knife encounters I saw are either by complete surprise anyways, or you have plenty of time. but you could weigh it higher if your knife is more of a tertiary defensive measure, since you'd presumably be deploying in the heat of things.
- Blade steel: I think this is the least important factor for a dedicated self defense knife, because its going to get used never or once. For a general purpose EDC+Self defense knife, this should be ranked higher.
I'm basing my 2c here off watching around 2k knife fights/stabbings, reading old dagger fighting manuals & personal martial arts experience. every 'system' i've seen is bs. I'm a combat sports guy so I hope you guys can fill the blanks 'cause I'm not a knife nerd yet.

I told you PM2 before. My Military (almost the same thing but 4 inches) deploys fast with the spyder hole, almost as fast as my automatic. Faster than one fixed blade I have due to the awkward sheath. It's really up to you though. Keep in mind how bloody and up close and personal knives are and how brutal it looks to a jury. Walk with wisdom and you can probably deescalate anything that isn't a straight up robbery threatening your life or a wild animal / dog attack. You didn't rule out automatics, they are the fastest and easiest deploying which could make a difference when you're scared, in shock, just got punched in the back of the head out of nowhere, etc. I have an Otanashi Noh Ken, but for fast deploying purposes, I would rather carry my Military because I can get it open, first time, every time.

Spyderco P'kal IMO.

>old dagger fighting manuals
Lots of medieval fighting manuals use daggers in a manner similar to the method taught by Shivworks.

>I'm a combat sports guy
Craig Douglas has a BJJ black belt on top of his law enforcement experience.

>What are some good EDC knives that would be decent in a pinch?
Any EDC knife would be good in a pinch. With a knife that small, no amount of optimization will make much of a difference in the real world. A 3.5 inch blade tactical self defense knife is not going to radically outperform another 3.5 inch utility knife.

i think i figured it out guys. half-joking. i was looking around my garage and i found these fiskars multi task garden snippers are a straight up mexican gardener murder weapon. lmao the handle is shaped like a bollock dagger and the blade geometry is perfect. doesn't even matter that its a pot metal piece of shit. too bad you'd have to pass off for a landscaper to get away with carrying it around concealed like that lmao comedy option though.

>>63813811
>Spyderco P'kal
the blade geometry could be more penetration oriented, doubt it would have a problem though. but i really like that peg that stops overpenetration. very possible with a small blade, not likely but it could end your day if that happened. that might be worth the geometry for that alone. i saw some other spydercos i liked the blade shape of better but they didn't have that.
>With a knife that small, no amount of optimization will make much of a difference
i disagree, a lot of edc knives that size are either are too thick of blade stock or have too fat of a belly to do much. some can't even stab into things.

I picked up the spartan george raider last thanksgiving and weirdness with the grip scales aside it is really good for the price. "But it's a 1080 (or something close)!" You are doing 1 thing with this knife and that thing needs a sharp edge more than the steel really matters to be honest. The balance is knice and it feels really good in the hand.

Slots into the sheath quite well and is among the better fitted kydex/nylon strap sheaths out there for that. If you really wanna fun stabby stabber to play with, I do gotta recommend them.

I've bought two Ganzos this week. The Firebird FB727 which is a Rat II clone with axis lock and the G204 which is a basic midsized multitool. Build quality is excellent. Both were like 20usd without shipment. Idk if this general has any sense anymore unless you make your own knives in your own shed and show them off here.

Really its either a SAK or a Leatherman style multitool.
Being a poorfag I got myself a Workpro Multitool.
Has good reviews and is recommened for a low budget MT choice.
A bit stiff and rough but so far it worked beyond expectation, no miracle tho but good enough to be praised.

Despite the long history of knives this aint the 1850s anymore and a knife is nowdays just extra weight.

Aside from setting up camp if you believe you will need a knife to fend off Humans you should reconsider your approach.

If you camp in the wilderness and want something bigger than a Mora get a knife long and sturdy enough to put down a Wild Hog.
With a knife like that - 24cm+ blade - you can stand your ground from small predators all the way to a Brown Bear, well at least you got a chance that you hurt the bear enough for him to give up.

there is no "best way"
its a large knife and will always be a obstacle.
If you are a big guy you could scout carry
it behind your back tho re-sheating will be bothersome.

You can carry it 5 o'clock on your hip like a normal knife
tho sitting down will always require some readjustment.
You could also carry it Military Style on your non Dominant Hip Cross Draw style.

Carrying a big knife is not just a committment but a life style.

NTA, I would have to dress like a cowboy so people think I'm too stupid and entrenched in my rural ways to know any better to pull off such a huge knife and I'm just not going to be that committed to the bit, even though it would be legal. It would attract lots of attention too. Appropriate for the woods or on a secluded farm though. Guys who wear Muck boots with high vis shirts into town get away with it though.

52100(AISI) - Knife Steel FAQ - Formerly a ball-bearing steel, and as such previously only used by forgers, it's available in bar stock now. It is similar to 5160 (though it has around 1% carbon vs. 5160 ~.60%), but holds an edge better. It is less tough than 5160. It is used often for hunting knives and other knives where the user is willing to trade off a little of 5160's toughness for better wear resistance. However, with the continued improvement of 52100 heat treat, this steel is starting to show up in larger knives and showing excellent toughness. A modified 52100 under the SR-101 name is being used by Jerry Busse in his Swamp Rat knives. German equivalent 1.3505 is discontinued.

The classic 18" military machete. I have four of them, including my original one I got in like 2007 or something. I've cut down acres worth of trees and hard, dry blowdown with it, struck knots, hit nails, batonned it, once I even left it in a freezer and then smacked it on it's side against a steel telephone pole as hard as I could. Unbreakable. And it stays shaving sharp through a day's labor, not that edge retention even really matters with something so easy to sharpen.

Well neither of us are posting sources so who knows. If it is 52100 then it's the best steel in the world, that's what Cold Steel uses in their drop forged line and those knives have the best ratio of toughness to edge retention I have ever seen in 20 years of collecting and abusing knives.

I give my knives a touch up with my field kit every day that they are used whether they need it or not, so I'm never going to notice or appreciate any improvements in edge retention over basic carbon steel in the 50s. What I do notice is poor cutting ability due to coarse grain structure and carbides, and needing excessive attention to detail in order to produce a hair shaving edge. D2 is a major offender here. Generally speaking I do everything in my power to avoid all stainless steels.

Carbides don't "ruin" the edge. You can get a high-carbide edge just as sharp, but it will keep a working edge longer as the softer steel wears but the carbides remain, creating a microscopic toothy edge.

You can't use natural stones with any of those. You're limited to diamond which gets tear out/bald spots randomly after less than a year of use, or aluminum oxide or SiC stones that dish out quickly and require way to much oil to be practical for field use. You also can't fix a snapped tip or deep chip with a file. For survival use I automatically rule out any steel that is too wear resistant for files and natural stones.

High carbide steels like D2 will always lose their hair shaving ability the fastest. They can retain the kind of edge that is good for opening boxes for a long time, that's why people think they have good edge retention. But my standards are higher than that so in my opinion these steels actually have poor edge retention. Even a 1055 hatchet is better.

File + Arkansas stone + leather strop loaded only with swarf from the stone itself is the ultimate system for essentially having infinite ammo for your knife and that's why all modern steels suck. As far as stainless goes, only AUS8, 420HC, and a couple other older cheaper steels are acceptable. My EDC and survival knives must not be dependent upon diamond systems for routine maintenance, or on grinding/sanding machines for major damage repair.

In my experience diamond stones will develop visible damage in less than a year of daily use, and the coarser they are, the faster the diamonds tear out. This is true even of premium brands like DMT.

>Where are you getting this from? They have the same martensite matrix as other steels.

It is my experience that D2 is the shittiest steel in existence. You can't hardly sharpen it with anything, and when you do get a shaving sharp edge, it doesn't last long.

You don't need a fancy stone to sharpen a knife.
I have used one of the tri-angle sharpeners shown at the to of the thread before, and if I have a pile of knives to sharpen it'd be worth it to have one as it makes the process go faster, but that's about as far as I'd go with investing in that.
If you actually work with a knife you're going to be sharening often, and in that case you want the job dont competently and fast, after a certain point the time and money invested in a sharpening kit have incredibly diminishing returns.

Steels are for people who can't sharpen. Most butcher shops use knife supply services that own the knives and pick them up for sharpening, same with restaurants. I've been a butcher for over ten years and I can count on one hand the number of guys I've met who use and sharpen their own knives. A honing steel is used to stretch out the performance of the edge when you do not have the ability to simply resharpen it.

That is only necessary if the knife isn't being resharpened every day or so. When I've sharpened a knife, the edge will last for at least a day in a busy butcher shop without having to do anything to it, longer in a slow shop. If you need to steel a knife that means you should have resharpened it a long time ago. I've met hundreds of butchers, not a single one of them use knives as sharp as mine, and I do not use a steel, nor do I ever need to stop and resharpen mid shift.

Being tough is not always the goal. In certain applications one would rather the edge roll than chip, and be easy to sharpen with found or primitive tools.
For example a survival knife. A knife camping when its weeks long and you carry in. A long hike knife. Most woodcraft, bushcraft, survival fags still adhere to the advice (advice that came from decades of hands on experience) in knife choice. Someone like Horace Kephart would have recommended 1075.
Its nothing if you are a high blood pressure indoor job type knife aficionado if you strike something hard the one time you use your knife this year and chip it out.
For a guy on a week long camping trip who paddles in in a canoe its different. Supersteels are off the table for many reasons

Toughness could be explained to the layman as its elasticity. The tougher the more resistant it is to deformation. The issue with that is much like glass vs plastic when it does deform it breaks (chips). Where something that has more elasticity will dull and give to deformation easily, but will roll or bend instead of chipping or breaking.
I think perhaps it is YOU who is ignorant

You will have to do more than plea to authority and copy and paste definitions if you would like to make an argument counter to common knowledge.
Elasticity fits the bill for a layman explanation. Talking over people's heads usually means one is afraid their position won't stand scrutiny. These "super steels" are designed to take impacts and pressures and not deform (dent, crack, break). Than that in turn means when you sharpen them to a fine edge and go past the "breaking point" they chip, Crack and break. Where a softer (less tough) steel will roll, bend, dent and deform.
And that is important. And you most definitely can still cut with a knife that has a roll spot.

Short version: Deadlock is suing Microtech for ripping off the design for "zero blade play".

Long version: I've not had a disassembled Deadlock in front of me to compare to, so take this with a grain of salt from my time assembling everything short of Glykons and Atreus (Atreui? plural?) :

I don't think the lawsuit will go anywhere. The mechanisms appear to be different enough to get it tossed or settled for pennies and no blocks. From what I heard well before the lawsuit was started, the ZBP (back when it was ZBT) idea was started as a friendly bet between Tony and another CEO to come up with a way to make an OTF without blade wiggle. Normally OTFs have blade wiggle due to the fact that the bade is traveling the entire fucking length of the handle and needs space to operate.

I am not a lawyer, this isn't legal advice at all, I used to work for Microtech, Tony's got an ego but is smart as hell and has the talent literally anywhere in the shop to back it up (except maybe inspiring the bottom rung), I own a few Microtechs but not a ZPB OTF.

Nah, you are just wrong. "Muh engineering" lol.
There is a reason lawn mower blades aren't made of these steels. There is a reason every time you watch a knife chopping competition when the blades fail and they do its catastrophic. There is a reason axes, and other blades striking tools aren't made of these "super steels". And the reason isn't price.
The reason is simply because they resist until they can't then they fail catastrophically.
"Muh toughness" get a refund on that education fat ass because you didn't pick up what they were putting down in the application part.
A roll is preferred to a chip. A chip is a failure that requires loss of material to fix.
Its that simple. You can not control the size and accompanying fractures that come with a chip.

Don't remember which one it was, but Tony's son ripped off the design and shape of one of MT's blades, and then because he didn't have enough machines he asked Tony to cut some blades. Tony agreed, the son sent over specs, and Tony and co went "Yo, hold the fuck up... these are ours!". He (allegedly) gave his son a chance to apologize and fix it but his son said no, so he started the suit.

I do not know about WE / 0777 / Kershaw debacle so I can't comment. All this is hearsay on my part as I was nowhere near high up enough on the totem pole to know The Truthโ„ข

Picture says it all, Matrix is a straight up design rip of the 0777, except ZT (initially) made theirs with a composite blade.
Kershaw later made a knife called the Natrix which was essentially a Mini Matrix but the name was a double entendre since Natrix is not only one letter off from Matrix but is also a species of grass snake (snake in the grass).

You can tell by wear and patina a lot about the user of a knife. For example in this knifes minimal use you can see the user has never done any cuts that would test the ergonomics of the handle. The lack of blade towards the thumb web pull cuts, lack of draw cuts, overall lack of use on the parts of the blade where the majority of strong cuts would be done suggests its owner puts his little fingers in his ass a lot while he jerks it to a family picture of his mommy.

Eh, to each their own. The only one that I'd consider carrying would be the Manix because it's got a proper locking mechanism and I can open and close it one-handed.

It's a crime against aesthetics. Much like every Ruko knife I've ever seen.
That style of blade isn't just insulting to knives, it's insulting to the very memetic concept of a knife.
Whoever thought u that blade shape, and every single person ever who has bought one are aesthetically handicapped, these are the kind of people who would wear socks with sandals or who would paint a truck pink.
