well, it's "true" in that if the government is saying it, you take it as a claim from them. but you also need to take the claim from all governments in this regard.

it's best to go by evidence, though. a su-35 was downed by something or had an accident. until proof is provided, you can't be sure what happened.

Ukraine doesn't post bold faced lies like Russia, but instead massages information and lies through omission. If they are claiming it, then I believe it. It's very plausible given the ramp up of F-16s, loss of AWACS, and Russia wanting to push their jets closer to fire more glide bombs.

How many F-16s and mirage 2000s has Ukraine got anyways?

i've seen both sides lie and tell the truth (outright or exaggerations). i've seen it with all nations. india and pakistan was a good recent one, and if there was no wreckage of the downed rafale, no one would know one was downed. now whether it was by a pl-15 or accident, none of us are privy to that info.

they have several f-16s in service and it's unknown with the mirages. they have around 40 mig-29s and 20 su-27s still.

The problem with using it against fighters at 40,000ft instead of a drone in the same room is angular resolution.
For the forseeable future a single pixel can't provide targeting data as it could be a bug 100m away or a jet 10km away.

If that works at all, couldn't you just add a second camera and eliminate that problem?
You might even get rough distance measurements if you can stabilize the thing well enough.
Maybe add some other kind of sensors, too. I don't really want to use the term "AI", as it's getting overused by retarded marketing drones to the point of losing all meaning, but I think there might be some unexplored or unimplemented opportunities for all kinds of sensor fusion shananigans.

This should have been fairly obvious at any point after Desert Storm. E-3s were what made the whole air war work, (mostly) de-conflicting the hundreds of friendly aircraft in the air at any one time and vectoring fighters onto any suspicious contacts. Any nation that didn't figure this out decades ago is foolish.

firms data indicates a hot something happening, but it doesn't do a great job of distinguishing between a drone attack on a hundred vehicles on a train vs a derailed crude oil train on fire. usually after a few days the OSINT guys will get some kind of satellite photo, or we'll have some phone footage from bemused locals on telegram, or ukraine will drop some rough estimate and a teaser of footage.

there is advantages and disadvantages to having a singular centralised military, one of the disadvantages is you dont get several militaries running different modernisation programs and developing kit specific for their own local enviroment so in a lot of areas the us is behind the lates euro tech especially in artillery systems. They kinda are mid, but they do offer some significant advantages.
The poor-mans-awacs paints the target from like 400km away in such a way that the russian jet doesn't even get warnings about it.
Then F-16 which is much closer to the russian jet will receive target coordinates from the AWACS, and will shoot an AMRAAM 120 on that target without even activating it's own radar.

The end result is that russian jet will get hit with the AMRAAM without even knowing it's being targeted.
As long as your poor-mans-awacs can do that, it is vastly superior to anything Russians can put in air.

It is. There is a burn-through distance for both ECM and radar. Stealth can also be picked up on high frequencies, but it's too broad of a target and can't be used by the engagement radar, only the target acquisition one.

I am sure in the near future someone will come up with a solution, like having a tandem of two missiles - target is spotted on acquisition radar, a missile with an onboard radar is launched, and ten seconds or so later the actual engagement missile. The first one gets close enough to use its radar to pinpoint the coordinates and give the altitude, speed and position to the trailing missile, which corrects for approach. Or something like that, dunno, just thinking out loud.

The F-35 has systems that can mimic an AWACS using pretty much any other plane in the air. If you're in range of any plane the F-35 is compatible with, you can be shot out of nowhere with no warning by a missile you had no chance to avoid. It's also much harder to do the reverse to the F-35 than most other planes.

NTA but yes that's what most retards ITT think, because they took one metaphorical misquote someone once said and asserted it unequivocally*
[*edited typo]

The F35 can provide targeting data to other fighters. A lot of time, effort and money has been spent precisely on this one function. And yes prior to the F35, this was one of the functions of an AWACS plane. However, an AWACS does a lot more than just that. So it's a bit like saying "having a magazine enables rifles to be fired much more rapidly as compared to single-shot rifles, so the Lee-Metford is like an M16-M203"

Modern radar is a plate. Larger plates in one direction allows for stronger emittance than 360 degrees of smaller plates, they steer the waves to an almost full 360 using interference.
Yes, technically you can do a 360 variant with theoretically as much coverage and stronger frontal and rear radars, but why bother, the front radome under the nose does that already (It's already 4x the radar of a fighter plane (2x the width)) and the rear is less useful anyway, plus the interference calculations are far more reliable and easier to calculate detections consistently with a flat radar than a circular or spinning one.

Russian pilots before the war averaged EIGHT FLIGHT HOURS PER YEAR. They're conservative with their planes for a variety of reasons, but the number of actually hardened combat pilots with their reps from Syria are a very finite resource. And the air-2-air Ukes used is particularly fast, while the Russian was at a fatal elevation.

Russia keeps wanting to remind the West that it has nukes by using conventional IRBMs/ICBMs against Ukraine, these seem like the ideal target. If you can locate one on the ground for maintenance in Western Ukraine would be well worth a $20 million dollar missile given the cost of the plane and how scarce they are.

Why instead do the Russians only target apartment buildings?

NTA, We know the plane was shot down. Even before the video was posted the Russians admitted it. What I want to see is proof it was an F-16 that did it. All I've seen so far is just reporters saying that's what happened, but nothing It was conclusive. It was shot down over Russian territory so if an F-16 cross the border and bagged a flanker, that's big.

AIM-120C has a 90km range, I don't think it necessarily crossed the border.

numerous times during this war the following has happened:

>[western country] releases statement they have authorized the transfer of [weapon system] to Ukraine
5 femtoseconds later
>[weapon system] putting in good work turning ziggers into sunflowers and Russian hardware into scrap metal

Biggest examples I'm thinking of is Himars, Stormshadow, and ATACMs but I'm sure there have been other, smaller cases

Although we did have heads up on the Bork awacs.
Anonymous No.63821032 [Report]

iirc Stormshadow began hitting targets within a matter of hours of the transfer being announced, so it's obvious that they had already transferred the weapons, trained the crews, and planned the mission, the perfidious fucking albions lmao

however the AWACS was announced long ago. as a matter of fact just last week anons here were wondering when would we see them in action

frankly im starting to suspect that their spy satellites are too degraded or too few still in operation for them to have updated targeting data on any of these, meaning that so long as the ukes are moving them, any time they find one, it's probably too late to hit it... whereas a building doesn't move, and making up something about it being a military target is easy so that you can pretend to your bosses you're doing a good job. after all, destroying AWACS? why, that's the air force's job, because it's a plane.

Lots. I'm not some sort of /pol/estinian with a notepad of news links saved on his desktop to readily spam on 4chins, but Rheinmetal is flooded with Leopard orders since its either them or Koreans right now.

Idiot

Anyway the answer is fewer than 200 tanks in total from European countries - excepting the Poles whose plans are fluid - and they will mostly equip existing units turning mechanised battalions into armoured ones.
Not much of an expansion actually.
