It is more along the lines of 'hey look the first aircraft to see 100 years of military service', it doesn't matter who is flying it you moron. The damn thing took to the air the year the Spirit of St. Louis was retired.

>>63808105
I didn't chose it, i just had someone point out that for few seconds the footage they used to make it had the biplanes illuminated by flares and i didn't want to sit through 3 hours of parade footage.

Non techno rave original footage found, the star and the '75' starting at 1:25:59. If you go through past demonstrations it looks like all of the Stars/numbers are Po-2s. So at least a squadron confirmed.

Makes sense using them that way, jets are a bit too fast for it though.

>>63808278
It is being flown by the KPAAF, it can drop bombs, it has a machine gun and they have enough to use them that way so yes?

Consider the following: It is entirely possible that one of those is the one with the jet kill, possibly being flown by the crews grandkids.

>>63808288
Even if they had those Chinese light up drones they would use these just because.

Its kinda cool, i was expecting a few trainers not the Red Angels.

Are you sure those aren't An-2s?

If those really are Po-2s, then holy kek. (Then again, Mexico was seen with at least three active Stearmans in 2016 as part of the Air Force College).

The great thing about these is that they have a rear-facing gunner, so you can put two starving norks out of their misery when their bosses send them to try the old bed-check charlie routine again but 100 years too late.

I thought about that but the profile (what little we can see) doesn't fit and An-2s aren't fit for the role.

An-2s are chunky and unsuited for acrobatics, i am going to look though all the old parade footage i can find to make sure. All i really need is a backlit upper wing, An-2s have the upper wing attached to the fuselage so that is a give away.

The other thing i need to figure out is if the footage is edited for time, at least for the full length versions that were shown live i don't think they were. Since each demonstration showcases a flying star and the year number shortly after each other it would be very unlikely that they were the same flight. If they aren't that means there are two squadrons with at least an additional one for training and spares. If that is the case then they have a entire wing of them.

Maintenance wouldn't be a issue, they could easily make the entire aircraft from scratch and undoubtedly have ones that have no or almost no original parts. They would probably have a updated copy of the engines, some form of alternator and a few modern bits not to mention replacing the old style machine gun.

>Po-2M-A obj. 2025 is probably a real thing.

Why should we? There's legit aircraft from the same time period that are still in production let alone in service.
Just because its old doesn't mean it isn't still useful especially for training people to fly.

>>63811160

Aren't those successive models of cub though?

I highly doubt any of the original models are still in service. It is entirely possible that some of the Biplanes of Theseus were actually first made in the 1920s, especially as Stalin would have offloaded older ones first.

Brings up the question, how? What is the operational use of Po-2s in Ukraine for the DPRK?

My initial thought would be to use them as night time Lancet range extenders. Outfit them with a radio, a GPS, 4-6 Lancets, female pilots, loud speakers and a MP4 player loaded with a Korean language cover of Night Witches by Sabaton sung by the North Korean news lady.

The Lancets can serve as decoys while the biplane delivers the main payload.

Unironically it would be pretty decent as a drone hunter as its just the right speed to catch but not overshoot. Considering that Ukranians have been doing flybys with shotguns it might not be a bad idea.
Then again with Russians they'll probably use them as frontline aircraft.

No. It is around three dozen being used to drag flares at night, although the planes had light strips the aircraft themselves were not the focus the huge flying red star was. They were being used for their utility not to showcase them.

>>63811483
Absolutely. He does do a decent job of showing how night time Nork Parades are slowly turning into Stalinist raves though.

>>63811500
Possibly but it wouldn't be bad a a drone range extender, go 50-75k off to the flank of a active area at night then release half a dozen Lancets to hit from a unexpected angle/range. If you just wanted to harass a large urban area a basic GPS equipped laptop and a pair of grad rockets would let them hit a big town or city from 65-75 km away depending on the rocket. You could time it so they flew in formation with a attack drone swarm they fired the rockets and turned away before they entered AA range.

>Come at me bro mode: give them MANPADs and have them fly in formation with drones to shoot down planes trying to shoot down the drones.

>Bezerker mode: Equip them with a pair of automatic grenades launchers then fly the entire acrobatics team INSIDE a city at night and blast away at everything that moves while flying 30 feet above the streets between the buildings. Yeah you are all going to die but based AF

With MANPADS they would be useful, the observer faces backwards but that could be changed. The machinegun would probably work just fine though however... A major issue with drones is many fly faster than it so it really needs forwards firing weapons.

I could easily see the observer having a swivel seat with four MANPADS forwards and two backwards.

They can be outfitted with S-5 launch rails, maybe a pair of forwards LMGs on those, three forwards MANPADS and one facing backwards for emergency use? It can carry 6 50k bombs so the payload and structural strength should be there.

Two or three squadrons is a significant number, especially when they were not being showcased.

Exactly what do you consider as an active service aircraft and how many must there be? They have at least 50-60 of them KPAAF service, that isn't enough for you? What is the issue exactly?

Are you doubting that they would use them in war? Are you doubting that anyone but the KPAAF is flying them?

Please explain your objections to them being service aircraft despite the self evident fact that the KPAAF is flying several squadrons of them.
