Some 1911s can be safe with lighter triggers, depends on how it was built. For example my Prodigy is sketchy with a low weight my other 2011s can do. Unless you take the safety off while you draw, but you could shoot your nuts off with a 6lb trigger under pressure too.

Part of what I'm trying to figure out is if the frame of a P226 would be compatible, or if it could be modified by a gunsmith. The N226 is literally a clone of the P226 and a lot of the parts are directly compatible without modification.

It’s a .45, it doesn’t want to feed JHP from Chip, Wilson ETM 8 rounders. It feeds great from a Wilson 47D 7 rounder. Last two rounds always jam. Not a nose dive into the feed ramp but jammed partway into the barrels. It’s like the rim can’t get under the extractor but no matter how light I made the extractor it wouldn’t feed. Perhaps there is a geometry issue with the feedramp, magazine feed angle and slide. That said I enjoyed a 5 inch .45 a lot more than I thought I would, it recoils so nicely compared to a 4/4.25 inch .45.

Slide to frame fit is reasonably tight. Grip safety fitting was loose around the rat tail on the gun, the grip safety/beaver tail fitjment is strange as it allows for a lot of travel for the pivoting of the grip safety. Maybe it makes them easier to drop in fit, swapping mainspring housings will make the grip safety no longer functional without fitting the MSH.

I was going to get MecGar, Wilson 47D 8 rounders, and some other brands to try to see if those work. Or just sell it to make room for a higher end 1911 like a used Les Baer in the 1.5-1.7k range.

Personally a 9mm 1911 in this age is weird when there are so many 2011 9mms around. Like the DWX which takes CZ mags. The ergos on the DWX was great.

Oh and to answer your question, I like it. It not being American bothers me. I want to buy an American 1911 with a similar option and features, like a Springfield Operator TRP. The hidden bomar/LPA sights are cool but I like Heinie Straight 8s a lot so I might just go Novak rear so I can install those. Personally night sights are a must for a gun and it bothers me I subscribed to the idea that they were a meme for a while.

A big part of the appeal of 1911s for me is the grip ergos. I don't like the way 2011s feel in the hand. I don't really need the capacity. The reason I would get a 9mm 1911 is to have a host for the 9mm suppressor I already have, an optics host, and something more enjoyable to shoot 9mm out of than my HK polyslop. The alternative is something like a DWX or CZC A01, but they lack that grip I like. I like having a single optics equipped pistol for printing the tightest groups I can in slowfire.

I'll probably avoid a cheap gun given your experience. Just not worth the trouble.

Hmm, but a 2011 and a 1911 aren’t really that different in grip thickness if you aren’t using the slimmest 1911 grips possible. NH’s new 2011 model is as thin as their single stack (counting pure grip thickness), they slimmed the grip module a little bit from a traditional 2011 grip. I find the 2011 gives more real estate for a support hand.

Also I didn’t like 2011 grips at first but since I spent so much money on it it grew on me. It might be buyer’s remorse.

I know they aren't that different in absolute width but it's the cross section that does it. The VZ grips on my Specialist are technically thicker than the P220 grips, but the cross section is very different.

I haven't held one of the latest Nighthawks, they might have one in inventory at my local range/shop which I'll be hitting up on Thursday so I'll check it out. I'm just not really interested in making any qualitative or ergonomic compromise at all in the name of capacity when all I use it for is sport shooting. Reloads are fun and satisfying on a 1911, I don't need double the mag capacity for anything.

They are very cool but the lack of beaver tail or a rat tail even makes it so when I draw from the holster I choke up too high on them which gives hammer bite + drives the tail of the gun into the webbing of your thumb. They’re not bad at all to shoot from a low grip, but if you grip up too high they’re a pain.

I go to two ranges. One is outdoors and run by a bunch of retired LEOs (they are quite fuddy duddy). It's nice because they have extremely stringent rules to keep out the undesirables but if they know you, they don't give a shit. My other range I go to is a very modern indoor range that is on the edge of the city.
