Unironically it'd end in an embarrassing flameout that tarnished his reputation forever. He was built for war, and in particular I think he was built for that war. He wasn't much before, and I don't think he would have been much after. Now he didn't have the connections MacArthur had, so he might not have gotten high enough for a fall quite as spectacular as old Dugout Doug's, but he would've gotten into some kind of serious political snafu all the same.
