RPK vs Minimi; Which one is a better LMG

RPK is a squad automatic weapon. The Minimi is an LMG that was forced into the role of a SAW. Same shit with the BAR. It essentially pioneered the concept of a SAW but then they slapped a bipod on it and took away they semiautomatic function with a subpar ammo count to perform the actual role. Same thing with the RPD. It was an LMG, again forced i the SAW role only to be superseded by the RPK and PKM.

RPK vs the Colt LMG would be a more fair comparison
and between the two I'd rather have an RPK if only because it overheats slightly slower

Minimi is better in every metrics but if I'm a squad MG and I got to choose between these two, I'd carry RPK any day

There's plenty of times where a squad that supposed to carry 2 M249/minimi only carry minimi and the other team either carry MGL or M203 due to how strenuous it is to carry 2 minimi and how it literally forces another guy in a fireteam to be an assistant (to the) MG, limiting movement fluidity

With RPK you can have 2 RPK in a squad that is self sufficient, that can become regular rifleman relatively easily and, bonus that as some former soviet bloc still maintain 3 fireteam per squad, they can technically go with 2 fireteam equipped with rifleman+RPK MG and another fireteam designated for grenadier role (means they carry RPG or MGL) or MG role (carrying PKM or other actual GPMG)

This is just anecdotal but plenty of people with an RPK told me
>Man, I wish I had a PKM instead.
Given how light a PKM is relative to the cartridge it has, I can see why they'd prefer bigger pew pews at a marginally heavier weapon.

Never, The most convincing theory I've heard is that the Marines simply wanted HK416s for their guys, but replacing the standard infantry rifle is much more difficult (bureaucratically speaking) than replacing a specialized weapon such a SAW, so they shoehorned it into that designation to get around political red tape.

depends on the serino.

the RPK is a very light lmg and also a rifle.

Minimi;
is heavy and impractical and also belt ffeed are more suited for deffence or vichile mounts where the RPK is just a inffantry paratrooper lmg

america should compeare the spear with the rpk

the Minimi is not a offenive lmg is is not in the same ball park both are fairly decent at what they do. but not com pearable

btw i've used both.
both have simulare damage and range but very different rate of fire.

Minimi is perfect for pill box
but the rpk is perffect ffor assault on fixed persistions because its light.
even for a lmg.

FYI
i think the U100 and RPK would be a more comnpearable on the battlefeil because they bopth desgined ffor the same missions.

conclusions
Minimi - defence or vehicle/pill box mounts only
RPK - assault lmg - used for raiding treaches and pill box

its the type of missions. that each lmg has their strengths and weakness.

I can tell you now the Minimi has less real world aplications than the rpk from its shear weight and belt figeting bullet feed isn't something soldiers who are in a hurry like all that much.

however perfect for defence.

that's why i said depends on senerio.
i would never assault with a belt fed at all.
i don;t give a fuck what americans say its pain in the fucking ass and takes way too long to reload.

In 1944 it would have been huge, in the early 50s it was still "okay" and the various SF guys in Vietnam put them to good use (especially the chopped-down ones, which are sexy as hell), but the PK and PKM mog it to death.

The fucking thing weighs ~16lb UNLOADED while an unloaded AKM is about 8, an unloaded RPK is about 10.5 and an unloaded PKM is about 16.5; an AKM with a drum mag is more-or-less functionally identical to an RPD while weighing eight pounds less and for marginally more weight you could have a PKM instead.

The IAR didn't need larger mags because it's essentially a full auto DMR. In fact, there's a DMR variant of it and the only difference is the optic. The god tier (by military weapons' standard) accuracy lets it achieve the same level of suppression as the 249 with far fewer rounds spent, and the reduced logistical pressure of that greater efficiency means that they can issue an automatic rifle to every single Marine, which opens up all sorts of tactical opportunities. Now the SAW gunner isn't a specific guy in one spot that the entire squad has to play around, it's whoever's currently in the optimal position for it and because the rifle and ammo are so much lighter they can be far more mobile as soon as someone else takes over the role.

In the same way that an Isetta is an automobile, Yes.

>Relative to an AK? Sure, but right in line with belt-fed contemporaries and slightly lighter than the SAW that came 30 years later.
See the earlier point re: "not uniquely bad". I'm not a big fan of the SAW either and mostly for the same reasons.

>More down to delicate belts than the action itself.
The delicacy is a minor point but still one I'll stick with.

>Is that so?
Yep.

The profile should have handled it, even if the rifling didn't.
If you use it like a slightly heavier AK then it can last, but that's the problem - if you use your belt-fed machine gun to do belt-fed machine gun things then it DOESN'T last.

(I know it's doesn't fit with LMG's, but I want to bitch about it)

These men are liars. It is never that fun with the ITKK. Or maybe if they had conscripts haul that bitch there.

Fuck that gun, it's so fucking heavy in its awkward-as-fuck box with that tripod, my shins still shiver at the thought of it. You haul it around for your whole specialization training period when training setting up, and then you get to shoot it exactly fucking once during the last war game.

You shoot a tiny belt at a flying RC plane towing a small target. Yay, it's fun and whatever, but then you get to go load the fucking belts. And you'll do it until there's no shooters left. And multiple units are going to be shooting those bitches. I'd almost give myself freely to a chopper than load those miserable belts.

And I guess it's nice if a helicopter happens to come shoot at your equipment, but if a fucking chopper has made it to where I would be posted, things would have been going bad for a while. Shooting at jets with that? Like pissing in the wind.

If I ever have to see that fucking thing again it'll be too soon.

I have to call this post a hard miss.

I've used both of these systems in protracted army exercises (JRTC/XCTC) and the SAW in combat. The 249 is an excellent automatic rifle, and far outperforms the RPK in the AR role. in a bipod/short burst firing usage, it is by far the most controllable and accurate of the 3 systems (249/RPK/PKM), and the ability to place it on a pintle/ground mount tripod so easily can quickly convert it into a true machine gun. even at long range, the 249 is a much more capable MG system, being able to employ 9-12rd bursts on target.

Lighter ammo, fewer reloads, and a dual capability without losing out on it's ability to be a competent AR. mobility-wise the SAWs weight never bothered me, but the RPKs length did.

It *supersedes* both the the RPK and PKM as a AR, and as an MG if the PKM doesn't have a tripod.
Anonymous No.63846996
>>63823463
you don't *need* to have an AG if you are using it as an AR, but you may want to have more ammo, since the system is so effective, more ammo is helpful. It's ammo consumption need not be higher than an RPK if you have disciplined shooters, you'll just the same scheme of fire with fewer reloads. Bonus, if you find yourself in a defend, it's much more capable than RPK.

you really ought to rethink your choice.
