>No Reloading thread
What's everyone reloading this evening?
I would post some loads but at this point why bother, I can't even muster the energy to upload, this board is dead, 4chan is dead, the internet is done for. This thread won't last 24 hours.
>>63828838That's a beautiful sig there man.
Tested out my Pyrodex loads in my 1887 today, all ran beautifully. Got about 40 rounds in before the fouling started getting things a little sticky. Fun day for sure. Magtech 12 gauge brass, fed LPP, 80 grains 3f Pyro, nitro card, fiber wad, 12 balls of #1 buck, overshot card, all sealed with beeswax. No press so I loaded it all with a wooden dowel and a stack of dimes.

>>63828729 (OP)Finally got some neck sizing dies so I can make some .308. But gotta tune and sand the feed lips as well
>>63829017*neck sizing bushings
>>63828729 (OP)How can a humble retard get started on reloading? Just buy a press and load some .32 s&w or .38 special or something?
Finally found the load load that allows me shooting the big Comp. 4.9gr N330 under a 124gr pill with a 14lbs spring, next step is tobfind the spring that allows the super low recoiling load of 4.6gr.
>>63829017Im starting at zero soon when i moved to bavaria, need new press and dies for 223Rem. Since i got no friends in bavaria I reload all weekend like a junky
Been priming 9mm cases with a Lee hand tool. Thumb gets a little tired after a while but nothing serious. My current load is 5 grains of Winchester Autocomp topped by a 124 gr FMJ, just range junk but because lmao CA and all its laws/taxes it's actually worthwhile.
>>63828898Thanks fren. I have a few I'm working on. Up next for that one is an ACRO cut.
>>63829049Give the RCBS hand priming tool.
>>63829034Look for lee kits on sale. Get a decent digital scale instead of the one that comes with it. Lee dies work well enough. And .32S&w (and all its flavors) are easy to reload. Lyman manuals have been my go to for almost 15 years now. If you want to watch some videos to get an understanding. Iv8888 has some of the best reloading content from way way back in the day.
For some keks, I loaded up some Rhodesian jungle. Since it's been a minute since I've shot this shit
Anyone have some good 35 Whelen load data?
>>63829034Don't listen to anyone else recommending shit.
Buy pic related, a 100ct sleeve of primer, a pound of powder, a box of bullets, and a rubber mallet that you should already have. You DON'T need a scale, you DON'T need a micrometer either.
You're in the hobby for less than 100$ and it all fits into a lunch box, no workbench space or mounting hardware.
Most importantly it will test to see if you can handle this and it will make you confident in your ability if you don't screw up.
>>63829074I think i should weigh the powder rather than eyeball it

>>63829041What's the prices on reloading equipment out there? And Id imagine if you go too low you may potentially run into issues with FTF/RTB
Does anyone bother with 556 NATO brass? Even if I ream the primer pockets they're still a bitch to prime what am I doing retardedly?
>>63829081I'm talking about the scoops, which work fine, even great if you know how to use them properly. Powder is measured volumetrically in 99% of ammunition factories.
>>63829081There is no need for a micrometer to measure cases. You can test both empty cases and loaded rounds in your own firearm for fit and function.
>>63829098All you actually need is a $40 Classic Lee Loader in your caliber and a $5 rubber mallet. However a priming tool, scale, and micrometer (maybe $75 extra) make things vastly easier AND safer. Scoops are great until you hit a powder that's not on your Lee Classic charge card and you have to use charge loads from Hodgdon or something which are formulated by grain weight. Had that issue because all I could find locally was Autocomp, which isn't on the Lee 9mm charge card.
>>63828729 (OP)got some fireformed alpha brass annealed for 6.5 grendel. will probably work up some 123gr lapua scenars and 130gr berger hybrids. picked up some fgmm primers from midsouth, so i'll see how they do compared to the cci450s i usually use. i'm guessing they won't make a big difference, but what the hell.
>>63829143Ever use the 6.5 on hogs?
>>63829098Maybe 20% more expensiv, but i get it of the bussiness tax which makes it half the price
>>63829161i would if i had any around me. for now this thing is a 15# paper puncher.
>>63829179How far out have you pushed her?
>>63829209sadly only 350 yards, and that was back before i knew what the hell i was doing. it cries out for the 750 target (the farthest i can go at the range-which i still have to drive 2 hours for). it'll get there. for now i've been focusing on dialing SD below 10 on larger (30 round) strings. it's just about there. N135 has been the ticket for >120gr projectiles.
>>63828729 (OP)Nothing yet, but I just got my first reloading machine (Load-All 2) today. I'm reading through the manual it came with.
>>63828729 (OP)Gonna put together some 69gr 223 tomorrow, got sleepy tonight.
>>63829074Almost useless kit that is often found in like new condition as people give up.
>>63829112Powder may be loaded volumetrically but it is still weighed to verify.

R8 my .45 acp poorfag setup. Case trimmer comes in two days.
>>63828729 (OP)I've been working on a 9mm +p+ load for stopping grizzly bears. Right now my recipe is:
9mm Starline brass
147gr lead RN hardcast
9.5gr Accurate No. 2 (compressed load)
CCI No. 550 primers
I'm chronoing about 1320-1360fps out of a Glock 19 with a KKM barrel and a 22lb recoil spring, but man do these kick for 9mm! The only thing I want to improve is consistency. If I could consistency get ~600ft-lbs of muzzle energy I'd be happy, but with what I'm working with its ranging from 560 to just over 600 range. Something like 600 to 610 would be perfect. I think anything higher than that would start to become dangerous.
>>63829802Looks good, wet tumbler going to serve well. Make sure to submerge the washed cases 2x in fresh water and not just rinse over them. Rub them inside a towel before baking at 70ยฐC
>>63830500At Nato spec my Comp G17 will run on the OEM spring (17lbs), if you add a nig comp to your Glck with those monster loads you should easy run 19-20lbs springs and get very high effect out of the comp
>>63828729 (OP)>makes Friday Reloading Thread on a SaturdayEvro time, the only proper time
I will load 7.5 Swiss with some Lapua Scenars, idk which weight yet, and 7.62x53R with 124gr Lapua FMJ
Both need more speed since my previous attempts have been a bit lackluster
>>63829013>Got about 40 rounds in before the fouling started getting things a little stickythat's quite good really
>>63830851>that's quite good reallyI know right? I figured I would only get half that before the action gummed up. Gonna try and convert the shells to shoot smokeless next. I got an idea involving a nitro card covered in copper foil.
>rip shiny brass, the black powder was worth it though
Hey anons,
So I posted this troll comment earlier:
>>63830500It was meant to be funny. Please don't attempt to load with that recipe. I know most of you already know this, but a few of you are incredibly stupid or absolute retarded greenhorns. So for those anons, don't load with this recipe. It will blow up your gun, and probably your hand.
>>63829064>Rhodesian jungleqrd?
>>63829106I dont reload 5.56 (yet), but a lot of military brass had crimped primers and I think the remains of those crimps is what's holding you up, even after reaming. I chamfer the edge of the primer pocket with a case deburring tool. I don't know if that's the right way to do it but it's worked for me on surp 7.62 NATO brass.
>>63832208Lol, hey dude I appreciate you being upfront about the joke load before some anon took a glock slide to the eye.
>>63832268Buckshot with bird shot on top
Loaded up some cases with titegroup (same as high gun powder)to see if I can run smokeless with out modification first. 17.2 and 18 grains under the same 1oz and 8th #1 buck load (12 balls). Added an extra over shot card too. Place ur bets now to see if anon has:

>>63828729 (OP)post your source for zero sales tax vendors please. my favorite based reloading supplier americanreloading cucked out to my kiked state and started charging sales tax ill be damned if i give one shekel to this piece of shit communist empire of commifornia
>>63832228It's when you get ran out of your country by niggers and you begin collecting guns you'll never use as a cope.
>>63829106You must not be teaming enough. I use an RCBS primer pocket swager die and if you don't swage enough material out of the way, you know it. When you swage enough it primes like uncrimped brass.
>>63837515Basically all of them because nobody wants to get sued by lawsuit-happy Bottom Bonta. Be happy it's only normal sales tax and not that horrific extra 11% that's charged for complete ammo.
>>63837515>knows "his" state is over>is still thereYou are the problem.
>>63829034Download a reloading manual from ANNAS archive and read through the early sections that discuss the reloading process. Itโs important to have a basic understanding before you start throwing powder in a case.
.38spcl and .357mag are great rounds to start with. You wonโt typically need to trim the cases, and you can load anything from light target loads to fireball-spewing rockets
>>63829106Same story, I've got a primer pocket reamer but it really doesn't do the trick still, I think part of the problem might be the primer tool I'm using(think it's rock arsenal or something). Like a 20% chance the primer binds on one side and ends up totally fucked unless I catch it immediately, back off, and try a different primer. At least it got me over my fear of the priming tool setting off a primer accidentally, plus now I know a slightly fucked primer still works fine as long as it isn't actually damaged. Pretty fucking rage inducing and got me mostly tabling my precision 5.56 reloading though
>>63837788Interesting, know of any hand primer pocket tools that work well for that? I'm using a shitty little lee hand press but it works ok for less annoying reloading tasks. Maybe they make a die too...
>>63829034Would highly recommend starting with .38/.357, I'm one of the primer mangling retards. .357 is practically relaxing to reload. Do some basic background research and watch videos of the process to know what you're doing in general. If you load a moderate charge weight it's just about impossible to fuck this up unless you double charge a case, everything goes together smoothly and easily too. It's pretty relaxing and rewarding, particularly given the cost of .357 magnum ammo if you have a gun in the caliber.
>>63837515I only buy my stuff from local places. I ain't paying shipping or hazmat bs when it applies.
>>63835509All bloopers! Back to the drawing board ยฏ\_(ใ)_/ยฏ
>>63838995No, I don't know of any primer pocket tools that are nice and handy, you gotta put some ass into opening up those primer pockets, either with a die like how I do it, or some of those bench-top dedicated tools a few of the reloading companies sell. I *have* seen people reaming out primer pockets with a power drill, never tried it myself but I can't see how that wouldn't work. For an economical option look into that would be my advice. Good luck.
>>63828729 (OP)How common are squibs with reloading? And what kinds of QC do y'all do to prevent it? I've been thinking of starting soon.
>>63842637If you pay attention and don't get to complacent. You should never get one due to negligence. I had one like 11 years ago, and it was due to negligence.
>>63842637As long as you don't go way off the reservation and stick within all the data and guidelines there are out there, the margin of error is pretty big before you get into dangerous scenarios, broadly speaking.
Squibs and double charges can happen if you are not careful - the way I teach it is that the publish maximum load data isn't *necessarily* the TRUE maximum load, but the published minimum loads ARE THE ABSOLUTE MINIMUM. Early on I threw a double charge of power on my 38 special +p loads. I was luckily safe because it was 38 special in a gun designed to withstand .357 magnum. Too low of a charge however and funky stuff starts to happen. Usually it's people completely forgetting to throw power in a case. Just be diligent and attentive to what you're doing and you're not going to make an unsafe mistake.
>>63842637I've had three in 30 years.
Less often than with commercial ammo.
>>63842672I take this back. I have had a few others when I was trying sr4756. It's a very very case position sensitive powder. And a bulk of the max charges for it, still would not give consistent ignition in .38 spl. But they stop making that powder like 10 years ago. I only bought it because it's what I could find during sandy v. Absolutely awful powder.

Fuck you rcbs
At least I think I can knock it out
>>63842697I weigh my rounds after loading to check their weight against known component weights. Might as well use my digital scale for something.
Anyone with quickload wanna see if my .38s look alright? I didn't have enough .357 brass so I shoved 8grs of N340 in .38 cases along with a 125gr FP played bullet by Frontier. Will shoot these in a four inch Ruger Security Six.
>>63829784I use a Lee Classic in 9mm. It's my super poorfag pocket rig, although I splurged on a Lee priming tool plus a Frankford digital scale and Chinese micrometer. All that combined with free online Hodgdon loading data is like a hundred bucks for very slow loading but reliable/safe ammo every time.
>>63844253Without consulting quickload all I can say is that load doesn't seem dangerous at first glance, but the way you're trying to verify certainly is.
>>63844120Pics or the burr?
>>63844120Those look more like lube dents.
>>63848051how about these dents?

>>63828729 (OP)Since ammo prices in my country are so high (I'm ashamed to even say the price of a 9mm box) I'm thinking about getting into reloading, not just because factory ammo is expensive but also because it's cool as fuck and I loved reloading ammo in New Vegas.

So I didnโt properly size a few. As long as their trim length and COAL is good, does a tight chamber fit risk anything? From what I know, it doesnโt.

>>63849331WHEN SIZING USE MINIMAL LUBE IT SHOULD JUST BE A LIGHT SURACE COATING YOU SHOULNT BE ABLE TO EVEN SEE IT AND MAKE SURE THERE IS LUBE ON THE SHOULDER AND NECK ALSO A TINY BIT IN THE MOUTH
>>63849306Yeah you dont need a lot of lube, just a bit to make sure the case doesnt get stuck in the die. Those dents will pop back out when you shoot those rounds.
>>63850097>>63849922Got my first case stuck because I forgot to lube. Been a fucking lube whore ever since (not long). Whenever there was excess with other calibers, it would find its way to the relief hole.

I donโt reload, but my dad wants to. He got into guns in 2020, bought a rifle, a shotgun, some pistols and a Dillon progressive press. Itโs all set up in his garage, but itโs been collecting dust, because he couldnโt find primers, and I guess his interest waned? So my question is, are primers available now?
>>63854582Yeah, I buy mine locally either at Cabela's or the one local place. They ain't 40 bucks per 1000, but they are available. I'm sure online stores have em. I don't buy online since I refuse to pay hazmat

>>63856184>The 11% sin tax and and the ammo background fee going up to 5 dollarsthe 5 dollars is nothing compared to the fact you are registering your ammo stockpile with a hostile state government. every time you run that background check they save the quantity and type of ammunition you purchased in a registry with your name

Btw, possibly one of the top westerns ever, for his (McQueen's) journey of vengeance. But that's another thread.
Reloading beginner based in Czech Republic here. Any experiences with loading .45-70, lead bullets and blackpowder for an original Springfield Trapdoor? My first batch was 60 grains of local Vesuvit LC blackpowder, and 405 grain .459 size lead bullets without hollow base, no powder compression or droptube. At 50m the rifle turned into a shower head. Is there still hope to improve by reloading or is my rifle fucked? Bore looks shiny enough and rifling is still there; the crown has some marks from cleaning rod cleaning but nothing too major. I ordered some hollow base bullets from Germany and hope that those might provide a tighter gas seal/engage the rifling more effectively.
>>63857758Powder coat will increase bullet diameter a fraction but more importantly stop leading
>>63857907Thanks, will give powder coated bullets a try next. The Czechs have them, albeit again no hollow base. Would it be sensible to try and powder coat the hollow based bullets, which I bought recently, myself instead of buying flat based?
https://www.strobl.cz/en/bullets-ares-45-70-dia-459-405grs-fp-sbb-eprx_p3165
>>63857758When dealing with BP, you should have slight compression. Otherwise bp does funky shit
>>63857758>>63858035's advice is good. You should always have some compression with black powder, even if you're using a drop tube. Either increase your powder load to get a little compression, or you could use hard wads ("nitro cards") under the bullet to take up space and get some compression. You will have erratic velocities otherwise.
For bullets you have a choice. I prefer solid base bullets (not hollow), however, that only works if your bullets are the correct size, about 0.001 or .002 inches larger than your barrel's groove diameter. You need to slug your barrel or take a casting to confirm dimensions for this to work. If your bullets are smaller than your groove diameter and they don't have a hollow base you can expect shit accuracy. So, either confirm your bullets are the correct size (0.001 or .002 inches larger than your groove diameter), or switch to hollow base.
I'm a novice, but I thought the .410 000 in a 3-ball column was really cool. Clumps together and maximizes the amount of force for each projectile. What would the 000 or 0000 equivalent of that be for a 12-gauge?
>>63858116The equivalent for a 12ga would be two round "pumpkin balls", basically a duplex slug load. 00 or 000 are both too small to fit in a single column down a 12ga barrel.
In a 12ga 000 fits two pellets side by side per layer, 00 fits three.
>>63858064Cornmeal under the bullet also works well to take up any space if you don't want to increase your charge.
>>63858035>>63858064Thanks guys. I don't have a compression die (using Lee .45-70 dies), so all the compression I can do at the moment is by hand with a brass rod. I heard someone suggested to use the bullet seating die with a piece of wood of appropriate size to compress. I might try that.
>>63858132I bought some cream of wheat (? Jemnรก, pลกeniฤnรก krupica; Weichweizenmehl) for that. In my cap and ball replicas I used semolina, for the old Trapdoor I try to find something more soft, so the cream of wheat (?) should be fine.
>>63858132>>63858150Cream of wheat, cornmeal, rice bran, or similar works fine too.
When we're talking about compression you don't need a special die for that. We mean that when you seat the bullet using the normal bullet seating die it should compress the powder a little. If there's not enough powder to do that then add some filler. Basically before you insert the bullet make sure there's enough material (powder + filler) in the cartridge case so that when you seat the bullet it compresses the powder a bit.
The old-fashioned method that people used for handling in the in the field back in the day was just to use the brass as a powder measure. Fill the brass completely to the top, strike it off, seat the bullet. That is safe for black powder though it would be incredibly dangerous with smokeless.
>>63858150Yeah you don't need a special die for that. Just increase the power charge, add filler or seat the bullet a little deeper. Or all 3.
Yeah like
>>63858285 said any of that will work. Hell gauze, paper, cardboard, cloth or cotton balls work too
>>63856415because the ammo will only ever be used in his enfield. I don't really need to resize it if it's going to go in the same bore. As it stands every time I'm decapping it, I'm also resizing it- it's stretching the brass more than I need to and trimming a whole bunch of material off.
>wax slugs can foul up (or break) the barrel
Will we still get scented rounds if we just leave the shot (or slug) to soak in a kind of candlewax marinade?
>>63858285>>63858343Ok, got it. Thanks again. Will post results once I find a usable load.
What's my next project?
I have a brain parasite that makes me want to load special bullets into .308 cases. Here's what I already have:
> match (175gr SMK)
> hollowpoint (150gr TTSX)
> Frangible (125gr MK Frang)
> Subsonic hollowpoint (175gr SubX)
> Subsonic Frangible (125gr MK Frang)
> AP (165gr black tip pulled, current project)
>>63829017Sand the feed lips? Never heard of this before. Why?
Is there any decent reloading discord that is alive? Might start one if nobody posts one.
>>63859531you wanna get silly? make gallery loads with like a ~50 grain or so projectile and a few grains of pistol powder
>>63859531>> AP (165gr black tip pulledTry those in a .30-.378 Weatherby or a .300 RUM.
>>63857758measure your bore then buy a bullet .002" oversize if using unjacketed lead
>>63859731That sounds pretty fun. Load a single #1 buckshot or a .30 cal air rifle pellet as the projectile. For other ideas: tracers, super-heavies, duplex, or play with sabots.
>>63859542they are gouging my brass, Ill see first if tuning them makes it go away by being at a different angle
>>63855330I really donโt know what to do with all these bullets
I got them for free
I might shoot ~50 shots out of my precision rifle maybe once a week, shoot maybe 35 weeks out of the year
Maybe Iโll just hold onto them
>>63864517Can never have too many anon.
>>63828729 (OP)What's ur go to shotty powder? I need a quick burner like clays or titewad but all can find around me is titegroup/highgun. I'm about to switch to card and fiber wads so I can play with the velocity with the only powder I can find.
>>63866356I mainly use Red Dot and Longshot for my loads, but more importantly if you want to experiment with shotshell loading I highly recommend you get the "Advantages" manual from BPI. Shotshell loading is very simple in terms of procedure, but what components work well together and which don't is a crapshoot without data. For example, some hulls have straight (parallel) internal walls, while others are tapered inside. The wad you use needs to match this otherwise you'll get shit patterns and erratic velocity. If you want to use card and fiber wads then you will want to make sure you're using straight walled hulls, and you'll also need to make sure you're using the correct size wad. I use nitro card & fiber wads for loading brass shotshells for antique guns but I've never tried them in plastic hulls.
>>63858481what do you mean it doesnt need resizing? i get what you are saying but you still need to resize and straight the neck. they make neck dies for this exact reason. preserves brass life if you use in the same rifle. is that not what you are using?
>>63865422Primers looking a little cratered there
>>63864517How does Lapua scenars compare in quality against Sierra,Berger and Hornady? I wanna put a order on the new 6.5mm Long range bullet they released this spring
>>63868556Are you asking why this happens? That particular .357 mag brass has thicker walls resulting in the inner diameter being too small. Try different brass or ream it out.

Its getting too hot in the garage to the point it gets done in stages across multiple days

Who else has been doing hard mode reloading?
>>63869379I really want to order some rocky mountain cartridge (rmc) brass hulls. Never have to buy hulls again.

>>63869379Not me thats for sure but I got a very strange side quest. It turned out that a co-worker is related to a high guy in a bullet producer company here in Yuropoor and he would use that to bring a copper/brass pulling lubricant into the testing phase if i can proof we got a chance. Im sure its gonna be fun, doing such a project might turn into massiv amounts of fun. Once i got special reloading gear I request samples of the cimpetition lubricant, it was planned on my side for the case lubricant anyways... its just shifting the time line by a few months IMAO. I hope /rg/ joins by testing Prototypes :D

>>63868556i had a fucking 45 acp load session that kept having this problem was annoying as fuck luckily lee makes a final sizing die that squashes that down
>>63871879>lee makes a final sizing die that squashes that downI found out when squeezing .38s with that problem, that the bullet itself was sized down and wouldn't engage the rifling properly making them tumble in flight. Should've seated them right to begin with.
>>63871718Anon is hand-lathing a case out of brass rod for something beefy and probably antique.
I'm going to buy a Lee bulge buster for my .45 Auto brass.
Any first hand experience with one?
>>63872323in my case it was because the bullets were a bit oversized i think they were poly ccoated lead. also it was only happening with 1 headstamp of brass being the worst so i think it was brass variation like another anon said.
>>63874672Hell no. That would be too much on that lathe.
I'm lucky enough that there is pistol brass with the right wall OD. Just need to trim to length and then cut the rim to the right diameter and thickness.
>>63829041I fucking hate glocks with a passion but my man, your gun looks absolutely lovely. Peak aesthetics

>>63877321>>63877321Thanks man, but dont think I bought Glock because Im a fanboy :D At first it was planned as a show gun when writing technical data sheets for gun shops (product instrustions) than I got the idea to Cerakote it white (also 100% inside) to do gun cleaner instruction vids when we release the cleaner this year. Somehow the comp made it funjammed with 90% of ammo besides very hot ones so reloading was the key to get good custom ammo that runs smooth, next step is to decrease spring weight further down to reach the magic low recoil charge of 4.6gr N330 (like no muzzle flip). Cerakoting itself isnt even hard, checked the MSDS and most hazards they say are fudshit to scare customers. Doing it outside is enouth but dont use what i used for larger surfaces, the air to liquid ratio on artist airbrushes lets the paint dry to quick. Gonna get a normal sized one for cars to do the Bergara HMR and use the small airbrush to paint fine camo lines
>>63852551>>63857199I try to get the "living room" taxed as a bussines room, so im not allowed to put a sofa and TV in (they send guys to check). Instead I build a livestreaming room out of it, its kind of a room filled with a wood work bench for reloading, 6ft long steel tables for gun cleaning and a gaming PC/monitor for (vidya), video editing and work. Doing that is based and all the relaoding gear and guns gonna be 50% cheaper than MSRP because of NAC tax usage :D We gonna do real live reloading, bullet dimension testing, brass testing and some fucked up Lube shit since I got no frens in bavaria
Pounded out 10 rounds of 9mm on my Lee Classic last night. Took about 2 minutes a round with pre-primed brass and repeated load/OAL checks because I'm a bit paranoid and don't want to blow my gun up. Could go quicker but I don't want to risk it.
I love grug tier hammer reloading.
>>63880211>but I don't want to risk it.Based safe reloader.
>>63856415I like to decap rounds then clean them, then run clean rounds through my sizing die vs dirtyโฆ. Universal is nice for that
>>63878977do you have any issues with spherical powder bouncing out of the cup when its dispensing because its getting really annoying for me but im not sure what to use instead thats taller
Made up some plinkers this weekend. How do yall organize your batches, I have my own lot numbers that end in a R or C for range ammo or comp ammo
