>>63842978I think there is a deeper cultural and philosophical reason for this. The American philosophy is Pragmatism (in the William James sense) which means function over form. The idea of trying to conform to an abstract aesthetic form is not as important as whether something is practically useful or not. If it isn't, we don't particularly care about it.
Bear with me here but think about our Battletech mechas vs. Japanese mechas. Or how our cars and trucks look compared to European or Japanese cars. We like to build stuff that's functional.
China has a military parade every 10 years and they put a lot of effort into it. The soldiers look perfectly rehearsed. There's actually a belief in Confucianism that the truly human (or truly "ren" person) is someone who performs their expected social role in a way that is both effortlessly natural and perfectly rehearsed (and also aesthetically beautiful). Think of traditional Chinese tea ceremonies which have a certain way you're supposed to do it. There's also the "political ritual." This is basically an updated form of something you'd see in a Chinese imperial court. In Confucianism, the body of ritual is what holds the society together more than a system of laws:
