I'm a sucker for anything that looks like it was intended for some special forces applications, especially during the cold war so for me at the top of my head, it's the Steyr mpi-81. Steyr basically took an existing Uzi and remade it for their own application use and I honestly prefer it for the same reason I love the macs, something about the boxy look and clean lines.

IIRC the PVS-17 on the M4 in that pic is a mockup built during production because one of the real guys (iceman or rudy I think it was) complained about them using an ACOG instead of the real thing. Funny enough there are some shots where the ACOG is still on because the director didn't want to reshoot the scene. Also those handguards are incorrect, they're UTG and not the standard issue KAC quads.

Stocks that drop down like that look very inviting. The sig 55x and a bunch of other guns do that too. I once inquired about this and anons assured me that this is the proper way to execute a buttstock, just that the AR15’s buffer disallows it. And it’s true, that’s just what you want. For a shoulder fired rifle, you want a good bit of distance between the buttpad and the cheek weld so you don’t have to contort your neck too much. And you want the stock low relative to the gun/bore so your optic’s height over bore isn’t something ridiculous. Pretty sure I’ve seen competition guns’ stocks set up in this way. People make gun of the GBRS hydra, and ok the owner(s) aren’t exactly likable guys, but the product and thinking behind it is sound. A heads up shooting position is far more comfy, and increasing optic height over bore (slightly) is desireable as it moves zero-holding instruments like a laser over to the upper receiver and shifts their mass to a more desirable place. The best platform to execute this on is not the AR15 though, cause of the stock.

Yes. 1980s/early 90s military small arms procurement was a very different animal from how things worked in gwot/post gwot. A lot of A1s just had internals replaced to make A2s, all the A3s were built from A2s, and plenty of A4s had A2 lowers. The airforce was even using original issue m16 rifles, not even A1s, until like 2001/2002 for security units. It's a lot cheaper to just swap parts, and it gives armorers something to do.

And for this next one, you will break my legs first before killing me, but I really like 8.6 blackout. I like thumpers, I like SBR cartridges, and I think there is a secret, dormant potential within it to be a resurgence of the CETME-style cartridge. The overbore ratio and ogive length are just right. One could duplicate the m855 trajectory with an ultralight VLD. It’s just a neat cartridge that seems like it can do anything.
