good observation, you're only half right

aside from captive orca killing people, there was an article i found about them killing (and eating) fishermen. they also attack boat migrants too
https://www.globalcoral.org/are-orcas-eating-mediterranean-migrants/

even since orca have been memed on 4chan a weird timeline shift happened and everything about orcas eating people have been scrubbed from the internet. i doubt the article is around anymore too... i won't give more details though

So I unfortunately havent been to west coast for the nature, but I have been east coast appalachia many times, we have black bears. I was innawoods on my very first trip, it was in the blue ridge and I nearly shit my pants as all of a sudden I see a massive blur barrel down the fucking mountain side in front of me across the trail. I was not able to tell if it was a buck or black bear because trees had grown into the game trail at head height. Least to say I went cave man and started gutteral shouting and switched my rifle off safe. Also as a side note a feel like the woodsman who buys FRTs can now just mag dump bearskulls with 556 and be fine. I got the atrius dev selektor and will now mag dump the local bears if they want to FAFO

Pic rel was me on the trip.

I saw a post that summarized carnivore vs herbivore rather well, for why herbivores can be remarkably dangerous despite you assuming otherwise. In this case that mules are apparently stomp-happy protectors of a flock (Unless they want to stomp to death some of the flock)

A predator is (largely) fighting by choice. Unless it's real bleak arctic situation there's plenty of fish in the sea for them. And they're more wary of being wounded and not being able to hunt further so play it safe. Prey/Herbivore is ride or die nigga hours. You fight because if you don't you fucking might get killed and eaten. So a lion is "if you're not worth it I don't give a fuck". A hippo is "Shank or be shanked so if you are any kind of a threat I will fucking demolish you".

If the prey/herbivore can run they'll do that, but it's real cornered animal hours.

Ssharks, orcas and most other carnivorous things large enough to chomp down on a human would rather not, cause we are extremely bony with tough hard land-animal bones. this causes risk to both teeth and jaw and blubbery seals or squishy-boned fish is much more preferred.

that is of course, unless they're starving

More people are mauled by moose every year than grizzly bears and they share similar range.

Grizzly bears are extinct in most of their former range because they were so scary. They existed most places west of the misissippi river from west Texas to the California coast and everywhere north of that when Europeans settled.

I liked the Cabela sponsored hunt video where they have to kill a mother because they shot at some male hundreds of yards away, the female felt she or the cub were in danger, and charged hundreds of yards to attack the source of the extremly loud bear gun. An animal that runs towards gunfire.
Now imagine dealing with them in black powder times with single shots. They exterminated them for a reason. Offensively killing them was much easier than trying to wait and defend yourself with a musket.

That said under modern pressure the aggressive normal for species bears have been culled with modern firepower so long they have basicly been selectively bred to be much less aggressive than was natural for the species. Only the biggest wimps didn't end up shot dead and bred the next generation into progressively bigger wimps.

Mules will confront most anything and aggressively stomp/bite it to death. They are also much smarter than horseniggers and generally have much better personalities.
Love those dudes.
Roosters are also an example of an animal that will fight to the death before considering fleeing. If you've ever seen a cock fight, they will straight fight to the death while nearly decapitated.

Cool fins, anon! And is that a Heckler and Koch P11? You're so silly! You'll never nab a penguin with that little thing, and even if you did, with only five rounds, you won't be hunting for long. Plus, I've seen how you waddle around on the ice. A pepperbox pistol can't be very effective against bears. What you need is a truly amphibious rifle. With modern polymers, the issue of different cartridge sizes and bad ergonomics could be mitigated, and don't we already know how to deal with pressure issues in the barrel and receiver?
What's that? The Russian ones seem dubious? How about a gyrojet, then? Surely humans still like gyrojets?

A black bear took refuge in my uncle’s neighbors house during the California fires earlier this year. Eating food in the kitchen, sleeping in the basement, stuff like that. The entire block lost their minds. They eventually called someone to get the bear out of there. Required like a shipping container or smth idk I wasn’t there. But they didn’t kill him.

I do wonder though. Why are black bears such pussies? It’s not that they’re harmless. Do they not know they can fuck up some slender biped?

Probably a cost-benefit analysis. Wild animals with at least somewhat sufficient intelligence know that fighting unnecessarily risks permanently injuring themselves or death. But lions didn’t get that memo.

I never understood why lions were historically seen as noble creatures. Lions are some of the most degenerate animals in existence. You would think that lions would live relatively free of danger due to their place high up in their food chain, but they live only half of their lifespans in the wild as they do in captivity because they attack each other so much. A lion even making it into adolescence is a rarity because so many lion cubs get killed by adult lions, maybe two adult lions fought, one killed the other, the victor then kills the cubs of the loser so that they could impregnate the lioness with their own cubs. Sometimes that even the close siblings of other lions do that to their cubs when the sibling is away hunting.

And when lions fight each other, they don’t kill each other quickly by crushing each others throats, instead lions savagely attack each other almost as if they tried to inflict as much pain as possible, maybe biting other lion’s genitals off, breaking their spine and then proceeding to eat the paralysed lion alive.

Polar bears are in the Arctic where most people don't want to travel. It is a harsh generaly unpleasant landscape. Grizzlies are in green beautiful locations people love to fish, hunt, hike, bike ride etc.

So normal people cross paths with grizzlies. Polar bears tend to be around few people.

Polar bears are desperate living on frozen landscapes, depending on killing baby seals and seals coming up to breathe through holes in the ice. Grizzlies live where they eat berries, grass, and animals, and tend to be less desperate.
That is what makes the polar bear deadlier. They want to eat any animal slow enough to catch and will relentlessly pursue them. Grizzlies are typically trying to be macho when attacking and not pursuing you as food. They are defending a cub or stealing your hunted game. That is why they often stop the attack, but the polar bear intending to eat you does not.

Orcas are extremely smart and probably know starting a war with humans will result in their destruction. I still think they kill people but leave no evidence sometimes.
I saw video of them bursting through ice to attack cameramen (which they could have mistaken for seals) and a video of a woman long distance swimming with them on purpose with one adult playfully following when a juvenile quickly went in for an attack but the adult intercepted it all without the drone followed swimmer aware.
These are animals that throw seals around in the air and torment them for fun sometimes. Most humans study the exclusively fish eating populations easier to follow. The pinniped eating groups are smaller and migrate huge distances and are studied much less.
Obviously the ones eating mammals larger than humans and not the ones living on salmon are a bigger concern.
I have been in the water with them hunting dolphins around me by accident and been perfectly fine though.

Only male lions. Male lions live to be violent and mate. They rarely hunt being slower and less stealthy than the females and rely on the kills of the females most of the time.
The females are the smart cost reward analyzing typical predator. The males are just brutes.
They are basicly violent niggers that sit around ready to fight over anything while their women support them. A true african representative.

>because they engage in lethal sexual competition and infanticide.

Yeah that’s virtually every mammal though. We do that. Men have been known to kill eachother over women (duh) and the most dangerous element in a kid’s life is the presence of a stepfather. Have you seen what the zebras do? The lions are comparatively tame when it comes to infanticide. Last week I saw a video of a male zebra killing a newborn MID-BIRTH. Mom was fighting back with her kid halfway out of her. I joke that the most effective, Darwin-approved strategy of courting a single mother is to kill her kids, lol.

But anyways, avoiding injury or death is probably a consideration. Do you think maybe bears, being dumb, might be scared of us since we’re taller? Animals are easily confused by height.

I've heard a pretty retarded-sounding (though can't confirm if it's actually retarded or viable) survival tactic if approached by a bear.
You basically need to find a big stick, put your t-shirt or any other upper body clothing on it, raise it as high as you can and start screaming like a madman. This supposedly confuses the bear to think you're much bigger than it anticipated, and force it to retreat.

Most animals are confused by humans and think they are bigger than they are because humans walk upright.
Ocean predators similarly see a diver in fins, maybe scuba gear, tanks bc or surfer with board, etc and think they are 500lbs or more because a similar size fish or pinniped would be. This reduces how many are willing to take on a person.

For the same reason once a predator does attack a human and realize they are usualy easier prey than they thought they become serial killers. Mountain lions and bears are like that, rarely attacking but will turn into maneaters that hunt humans if they do successfuly eat one. But a team is almost always dispatched to hunt down and kill any that have been involved in an attack, preventing this.

I can't be sure, but i think the photo in the post you're quoting is from a National Geographic article. The article in question was on wildlife in the Antarctic. The photographer was spending a lot of time in the water getting shots of penguins, seals, and whatever else for the story. A particular female leopard seal apparently took a liking to him and would bring him dismembered penguins and scare off other seals. Proving that every species has its degenerates.
...
and my recollection was a bit wrong, and a little google fu has dug up the story here.
https://www.nationalgeographic.com/adventure/article/140311-paul-nicklen-leopard-seal-photographer-viral
It was a story on leopard seals. But there was a female trying to "nurture" the photographer. Remember that leopard seal females are frikkin HUGE. 8 1/2 to 11 1/2 feet long, averaging about 800 pounds with exceptional individuals being perhaps 12 1/2 feet long and weighing upward of 1000 pounds.
So I guess, just look like you're a helpless baby in the water and some leopard seal mommy will think "I can help him" and you're set Anon. Book your ship. I just hope you like raw penguin.

Yeah that is a thing, they've been smashing into yachts and damaging them, probably a fun game, orcas do get into fashions like that. But if they actually ate someone - even a migrant never mind a rich yacht owner, it would be known by now.

Lions eating cubs makes more sense when you realize you only get a short window as pride leader to impregnate the females before someone else comes along and kills or kicks you out. If you wait 6 months for the previous lion's babies to wean and the mothers aren't fertile in that time then you might not get any kids at all despite being the dominant male.

It's unclear why the sea leopard killed that snorkeler. It may have mistaken the woman for a small seal, it may have been some territorial thing.
The animal held her under water and drowned her, biting her multiple times, but seemingly didn't try to eat her.
Sea leopards don't really have the teeth necessary to chew large animals into chunks small enough to swallow, they rely on ripping their dead prey apart by shaking them violently and smashing the carcasses on the surface of the water.

The regular behavior of sea leopards is still pretty poorly understood, and there are plenty of other accounts of sea leopards either completely ignoring divers or just examining them with curiosity.
There's also at least one instance of one large female sea leopard being friendly to a diver and repeatedly trying to feed him dead penguins over the span of several days.

Adult snow leopards are fluffballs that are about the size of Labrador retrievers. Obviously they could hurt you if they really wanted, but they're really goofy and skittish. They're not aggressive toward humans like other big cats. Cougars and captive cheetahs (which are both felines AKA "small cats") have caused more human fatalities.

Yes it’s exactly like that. The other guy wants to point out that “no you’re wrong about lions because this video exists”, and I point out that this exception does not even exist for the hyenas. Therefore this difference of “mercy” is a general truth about lions and hyenas. Typically, from what I’ve seen, the lions (and other cats) will drag their prey by the throat from wherever they caught them to somewhere else more comfortable, then will keep biting down on its neck for some time until the animal is motionless. Exceptions for fuckhuge prey that can’t be asphyxiated in this way.

Thinking animals are cute or fren-shaped or whatever does not make you a furry, kek. All mammals are cute when they’re kids, and I think the reason humanity took so well to cats in particular is that cats retain their neoteny into adulthood, so we just think they’re cute.

And despite that, black bears have far more recorded attacks on humans than browns or polars. Sure, brown and polar are much more dangerous. But the stats don't lie. More people are mauled by black bears in NA than any other. Don't underestimate them. The thing with North American bears is

Polar
>will actively hunt you, see you as food, will smell you long before they're in visual range
Brown
>will let you know exactly how much you've fucked up with body language barring a surprise defensive encounter. They might also hunt you
Black
>"king" of the mock charge, aka, liars. Other bears you can tell what they're thinking/feeling by their body language/vocalization. Black bears not so much. They're giant pussies. But they're also giant liars and unpredictable.

It's because until they're big enough to be the big boy in the forest they've already had to dodge everything in between. Coyotes, wolves, other bears, etc. By the time they're big enough to throw their weight around they're already traumatized by every other large predator in their territory. And even then, a pack of wolves can easily overpower a full grown male black bear. But, sometimes, something clicks and like a nerd pushed too far, they snap and kick some ass.

Not really. AWDs have 4 toes though. Other than that and the fact they're the most successful predator in Africa, ~85% success rate vs Lions at ~25%, Hyenas at ~30%-70%(depending on group size), they're not too different from domestic breeds of similar build/purpose.

I’m not sure how much of the difference in behavior in attributed to wild dogs being wild, and our dogs being tame, and how much is attributed to genetic qualities selected against to produce docile dogs, but yes, they are quite different in behavior/ability. African wild dogs are the most successful hunters in all of Order Carnivora. Just total bloodthirsty killers. I don’t think a pack of golden retrievers could ever become as distinguished as this, lol. And I don’t think you can keep them as pets, not even if you raise them from cubs. Shame, because they’re kinda cute.

>your picrel
Someone should tell Carl Akeley that cheetahs are just golden retrievers and so are off limits for sport hunting. Seriously. Ever heard of “cats running dog software”? That’s cheetahs. Unless that’s a leopard, kinda hard to tell from that image.

To my knowledge they are just “tame” dogs that went bush not long after the Aboriginals migrated here (and are the main reason why there’s no marsupial predators bigger than a Quoll on the mainland), their closest relatives are the Papuan Singing Dog (pictured above). If your a full grown man in good health you should be able to scare ‘em off, Wild Dogs will not care and will just kill you since they are used to bringing down Wildebeests and shit

They're feral dogs that were once semi-domesticated.
They've been feral for so long (40k years maybe) that it's bred back into them and they don't make good pets.
You need a permit to keep them and there are regulations on kennel enclosures because they're quite dangerous if they escape and they're not easy to contain.

They're mostly hybrids these days, interbred with domestic dogs who escaped.

They are really not worth the hassle, every single “pet” Dingo or Dingo mix I’ve met ends the same way. Put down after it nips someone or goes apeshit on someone else’s pet/livestock, they do not make good pets. They do make good singers although.

>black bears have far more recorded attacks on humans than browns or polars
That has more to do with the fact that black bears live in more populated regions, meaning you have more encounters with them.
The raw "attack count" statistic is useless, you want the proportion of encounters that result in an attack.

Nta, but proportion of encounters that result in an attack is meaningless here. There are more black bears around humans and black bears attack humans more than other bears. That's the reason black bears are dangerous. This is simple logic, mate.

>Someone should tell Carl Akeley that cheetahs are just golden retrievers and so are off limits for sport hunting.
IIRC, and off rough memory at that, I want to say he got attacked while he was taking a shit or something, alone, and probably while pretty vulnerable. TheBrainScoop has a decent amount of info on the guy as the main lady on that channel (which I can't remember the name of ATM) worked for the Field Museum at the time, where a lot of Akeley's work/collection is displayed. I do remember a mention that him and his wife went to hunt elephants in Africa to taxidermy them and get a quality reference for study. His wife ended up shooting what is believed to be a larger elephant than his and he may have "overstuffed" his elephant for a number of reasons, though she mentions maybe he was a little jealous of her getting the bigger specimen, lol. Hard to say, though, as he was basically a pioneer when it came to taxidermy at the time. While 2x4s, chicken wire, and clay seem pretty low tech, it resulted in rather lifelike animals that still really IMO hold up even today. They didn't exactly have the throat, chest, nose to butt, and eye to nose measurement chart and catalog of urethane foam forms we have today. No doubt that elephants are still custom; I think the biggest you can easily find is bear or bison, maybe.

Oh also a taxidermist who I forgot to mention in the top 2, now 3, is Dan Chase, a name that upon mention on the taxidermy dot net forum (supposedly at the time of his death in IIRC 2014) either will get your comment filtered, removed, or result in a ban. From what I read, he is basically THE guy who invented the modern polyurethane foam form. He would later supposedly knock off a McKenzie (or other large supply company) form IIRC which got him into legal trouble which is ironic considering there are McKenzie and Van Dyke forms that look almost identical right now, just in lower quality by different artists than whoever sculpted the original for, say, McKenzie. Oh and McKenzie owns that forum. And Van Dyke. And Payer eyes. And...yeah what a mess. They have like 5 warehouses across the country. Always fun to look for new taxidermy eye/form/materials supplier only to scroll down to the bottom and read "Nagle DR, TX".

>easy to tell it’s not a cheetah

I am not familiar with the finer anatomical details of cheetahs and leopards. Leopards are just swole cheetahs in my mind, that’s how I identify them. If it looks like it can easily fuck me up and drag me up a tree, it’s a leopard, lol. And this wasn’t exactly obvious from the image, not to my eye, but looking at it again now, I can see it.

It’s kinda gangster to be attacked by a leopard, presumably by surprise, and manage to kill it. If I did that, I’d wear the leopard’s head as a hat for the rest of my life.

Bro wtf are you talking about. A grizzly would obliterate a gorilla. Gorillas are very sensitive and shy. There's never been a documented case of a gorilla killing a human. I think people who have never seen a gorilla in real life think they're bigger than they actually are. An adult silverback is barely touching 5'11" whereas an adult grizzly is nearly twice that at 8-10 feet when reared up on its hind legs.

Yes. Female hyenas copulate and give birth through the pseudopenis. I was about to say that it’s probably an elongated labia fused in the shape of a cylinder, but I looked it up just now and it’s almost a bona-fide penis - it it an elongated and enlarged clitoris. How tf do they give birth through this?

If you want your mind to be blown by unusual genitals, look at the shape of a turtle’s dick. The glans extends laterally far beyond the main body of the penis, kinda looks like a mushroom. This fits into something of a recess/cavity inside the female and the two become mechanically locked together until the male cooms.

Not at all uncommon in the animal kingdom. If you're degenerate enough, you might've heard of "the knot". It's located on the shaft, not glans, but it serves the same purpose

They uh, just do. It tears after the first birth so the births after that are a lot more easy compared to the first.

As bad as it is, the environment that even led to this was probably one that included infanticide of female cubs by other females being far too common, so looking male was their best bet, which eventually led to this.

To be honest, that says more about hyenas than a lot of things.

There was video in a documentary where they try wave washing the film crew. That's the hunting tactic where 3 of them swim as fast as they can towards a small iceberg with a seal hiding on it. At the last second they dive under, creating a wave that washes over the ice sweeps the seal over the other side, where a 4th orca is waiting to snatch it. They tried the same tactic on the crew in their little inflatable boat, and the crew saw the 4th orca sitting right on the other side waiting.

These were Antarctic orcas, who have very little contact with humans.

But even in like the Pacific Northwest where human-orca encounters are pretty frequent... I wouldn't trust them. Like the other guy said, there's just no witnesses. Tons of people go out on the water alone and are never seen again. I think the ones in places like that are just smart enough not to fuck with groups of humans. The line that they don't like land animals is bullshit too, they prey on pigs and deer and even freaking moose. I see no reason for them not to snatch a lone human.

>Well either they are harmless or they are smart enough not to leave witnesses.
>And we know orcas are not harmless.
There's a huge difference. We have records of dolphins killing humans going back to the mid 1400s. Cheetahs are another animal that is often said to have never killed a human being, and even a cursory search disproves that (although, all kills are in captivity).
This goes the same way for the other way around. We have at least 2 records of men killing a grizzli unarmed (at least, fighting off the bear unarmed, then killing it with a big rock they picked up). The fact that there's only two in recorded history is pretty fucking telling of your odds as well.
For orca the issue is that there should be kills. We have records of multiple "attacks" for the last 100 years, usually after getting hit or fucked with (one genius lassoed an orca to get him to pull his boat), and there's at least a few cases where it seems likely that they could have killed someone, very easily.
The most outright gratuitous "attack" was one orca trolling the Terra Nova expedition to Antartica in the 1910s by almost tipping the dogsleds into the water for the lulz. Everyone was fine.

There are two confirmed reports of grizzli being killed unarmed, one relatively recent, the other dating from the 1930s iirc. In the 1930 one, which got confirmed by a biologist, the man killed the grizzli by biting its neck so hard the bear lost consciousness, then smashing his head in with a rock.

What? Your mouth is tiny compared to a grizzly’s neck. You don’t have sharp teeth. Is a man’s bite force even enough to do any real superficial damage? How do you manage to hang on to its neck with your face without being thrown around and mauled?

Petersen bit the bear at the jugular. He never broke the skin, but the force of his jaw clamping down eventually made the bear lose consciousness.
Just hope you luck into hysterical strength boost and outrage the bear, I guess. Honestly killing the beast with your teeth seems less farfetched to me than the notion you can close the distance without getting gutted in a single swipe, or hold on for even 2 seconds to a grizzli that doesn't want you there.
I guess that's why I'm not a crazy wyoming dude from the beginning of the last century.

I know, but those are Siberian tigers, they live where all the snow is. Russia is a gigantic country, the majority of whose land area is devoid of human life. So Russians never encounter Siberian tigers. Also, there are only about 400 Siberian tigers on the planet. That’s nothing. You might set out to travel to the desolate tundras to encounter Siberian tigers and not find any.

>Roosters are serious business

It was one of my jobs as a kid on my parents farm to feed the chooks, including my nemesis, the fucking rooster that at the time stood damn near up to my waist. I used to have to hold the chooks food bucket in one hand and a rake in the other in an attempt to fend off the rooster. More often than not I failed and the bastard would scratch my legs or arms like you see them doing in cock fights, all wings and claws. I was happy the day I opened the coop and saw an 8-10' carpet python laying there with a rooster sized lump in it's belly. Dad got a new rooster not long after, that was of a lot nicer disposition. Our pig sty was nearby and one of the pigs was a friendly critter who I got quite attached to, she used to like when I'd scratch her back with the aforementioned rake, she'd sit there grunting and wriggling her back as I'd do it. Pigs are cool animals and very smart. Her name was bacon.

Having used it at -35 I can tell you it is inadequate for those temps without supplementary cover. Your nose or mouth starts to freeze after an hour so you wake up to move the mummy bag hole to the other spot. Lots of breath ends up in your bag and the condensation eventually starts to cool you off. Even with a foot of spruce boughs for insulation, your face suffers the entire night and you get little real sleep. Hot tent is the correct answer at those temps (leave your gun outside)

I've heard about M4s having problems with freezing, but by the way it was described it could be argued to be user error. I don't remember the details exactly, but I think it was something about troops taking their rifles inside their tents which could cause condensation inside the action or trigger group, which would then freeze as they exited the tent in the morning
Idk if it's real or bs thoughever

The truth is that basically every firearm has problems in these conditions.
It's not a problem with any specific operating system, despite what AKfags like to believe.
Any condensation/humidity from going from a warm(er) shelter or inside to outside instantly freezes the action, trigger group, etc. on metal parts.
Arctic explorers and Canadians learned to always leave rifles propped up outside for this reason and never bring them in. Even still, old mausers and enfields had bolts frozen shut that had to be kicked open.
Special lubricants and greases help, but they also dry out and evaporate fast in environments that have 0 humidity, so it's a bandaid.
tldr, arctic conditions are not conducive to any guns.

You want the 'wet' carrier for lubes to be gone anyway. Grease turns to molasses or freezes solid
Piston things typically work just fine outside small controls like mag release or safety selector, which can be mitigated by installing extended selectors for thick glove manipulation
DI struggles in these conditions, manipulating the bolt every couple hours with a press check etc helps
