The tinnitus went away
I ND'd in my house with +P ammo last week and thought I fucked up my ears for good. As of this morning my ears are 95% back to normal. Life is good.

The ringing often disappears with time.
The hearing loss doesn't.
Unless you just took a hearing test and its results were the same as one before the incident you have no idea if you've damaged your hearing or not. All you know for certain is the REEE has gone away.

take this as a warning then to not ND

let's say
>it's 4 in the morning
>3 armed astronauts break into my house with evil in their mind
>my 4 blue-eyed blond kids and my wife are sleeping
>I storm out my room and unload my 12g shotgun and then my 9 mm handgun on the colored enrichers in the middle of my corridor next to asleep family rooms
>I have earpros and be fine
>my family of course does not because they were sleeping
>they aren't in the corridor, or in any room I would open fire from, but still far too close from where i'm standing
What's happening to their hearing ? Is home defense suppressor mandatory ?

itd be fine, no permanent damage unless they opened the door or something. Dry wall isnt good for stopping sound but its still going to cut it down enough to prevent any notable hearing damage

Never had gun tinnitus but weirdest shit for me was going to a concert for the first time and the crowd hollared so loud at one point my sound short circuited. This was 7 or so years ago so I am trying to remember it exactly, but it was like someone unplugged the headphones only the headphones was my meat-body. For just a split second.

If I have it's not enough to make any difference. I don't notice anything.

I have about 50/50 chance of not having tinnitus in the morning, by evening time its almost always there

Well yeah a single loud bang wont kill your hearing for good, but now you are much worse off for potential future bangs. Imagine it as a threshold, you haven't reached it yet but you have still started climbing the ladder towards the brim and have no way to go back down.

Well no shit, if I somehow end up in combat or something I just kiss my good hearing goodbye no matter what. I'm not planning on NDing again in the near future. This was only the second such incident for me and the first was when I was investigating a malfunction with some antique 22 rifle over ten years ago.

You know how a windshield, monitor, or your glasses slowly get dirty and you don't really notice, but then when you finally wash them it's amazing how clear things look? Your hearing works like that too, except you never get to reset your hearing like you can washing your glasses. It just slowly gets worse and worse as you get older. Listening to loud noises speedruns the damage.

I hear you man, last month's accidental discharge had my ears RINGING for a few days. The months before that though my accidental discharges were lucky enough to be with hearing protection still in, but sometimes the dice dont roll your way and when you get that accidental discharge served up on your plate you arent lucky. So long as you're still alive though you can always count yourself a little lucky, these things just happen

Thankfully I'm not into loud music or motorsports and I otherwise train with muffs over plugs. This one incident was probably 90% of the damage my hearing has experienced in total yet I don't notice it.

I'm happy for you lucking out on the EEEE anon, but
>As of this morning my ears are 95% back to normal
Unless you take a hearing test (which you should consider) you won't know. Yeah you might not notice too much because we tend to lose higher frequency response first, and our brains are good at compensating. But you definitely lost something. Be extra careful going forward. If you like to shoot a lot at the range, particularly if it's an indoor range, consider a suppressor in addition to earpro.

>What's happening to their hearing ? Is home defense suppressor mandatory ?
If they experience instant noise >140 dB they will suffer some hearing damage, which is possible in some kinds of home construction but it'll depend on the physical specifics. Ie., exactly where you were in relation and distance to them and what the sound path is.

But it's not like they'll go deaf. I think a suppressor is a good idea in general, and if the HPA made it then it'd be 100%, why wouldn't anyone for $100 over the counter like it should be? But if you don't and can't afford it now don't sweat it either. A bit of high freq hearing damage is infinitely better then what a home invader could do.

Everything sounds completely normal so I'm satisfied with that. Even the neighbor's roosters hundreds of yards away in the morning sound the same. I'd say I lucked out.

Yeah, if you lost like, 19% high freq response in one ear and 7% in the other ear it won't affect you or be noticeable without a test unless you previously enjoyed certain kinds of music (and had a pretty high end setup as well). I'm not saying you should be miserable or anything or that you didn't luck out, but hearing damage is cumulative and for now we don't have the technology to repair the cells in the ear (though they're working on it and there was some really interesting research in the last few years). Just saying take it seriously going forward is all. Shit we shrug off when we're younger can also come back to bite a lot harder as you hit your 40s/50s and older too. But glad you're overall ok.

The frequencies we lose with age/damage practically don't occur in nature at all or in music.

Last time I went to the range and was shooting suppressed so only wore plugs. Then some came and started to shoot next me with a gun that was loud af that really fucked my hearing for a couple of weeks.
