thermals are for detection, NVGs are for action
You see a red hot blob over there? Use the NVG and make sure it's not something important
Moving at night? NVGs will help show terrain details instead of temps
Night watch? post up and turn on the thermal every couple of minutes to make sure nothing is sneaking up on you
Also thermals are massive battery hogs, it's good to have something to use in the dark that doesn't make you nervous about battery life as much

anon, thermals are good enough now that you can make out plenty of details with them, in fact a $1700 oneleaf thermal scope can see shit like a mile away just fine in pitch black darkness, with nvg you're limited to whatever an ir flashlight can show you or hope theres decent moonlight
for the price, you get way more out of spending a little more for nicer thermal than you do anything night vision

While you can make out details, they are still tough to use for walking around. I would spend more on the NV and just get *something* for a thermal. The capability to dollar ratio favors cheap little thermals, IMHO. Eventually you'll want something very cash money like an RH25 or a COTI or a SkeetIR.

Just look for sales. Pick a housing you like, and then go from there on what your budget for tubes is.

Some popular housings are BNVDs, DTNVS, Nocturn Industries makes a TON of different housings now. Some have adjustable gain, some do not, this is up to you to decide if you want that or not. Some take CR123As (most actually), some take AAs, up to you to decide.

The most expensive Gucci setup would be PVS31As with L3 tubes however this does not have adjustable diopter so if you are 4eyes you'll be wearing your glasses, other housings have adjustable diopter.

All of these things you must consider, do you need articulation? do you need ruggedness? (7075 aluminum?), do you need an IR light built in?

For tubes you reach diminishing gains IMO, most people won't genuinely notice the difference between Photonis tubes and something like an Elbit setup. The main specs that matter you can look up but generally SNR is what you want to look for, the tubes go like L3 (genuine fucking magic how good their tubes look >> (power gap) > Elbit/photonis > NNVT (dookie) >>> Chinese shit

Sounds like you've never really used thermals or modern NODs. Thermals are workable for movement as long as whatever you're looking at is not behind a window and there's enough temperature gradient to tell what's what. But indoors on a warmish night and you'll be bumping into shit all over the place because everything made of similar materials is radiating about the same amount. Then you get capped by the guy standing on the other side of the window you can't see through.

LAM/MFAL comparison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5V9qYxITW0

Resource on what these spec terminology mean
https://www.nite-walker.com/post/2019/11/21/specs-for-dummies-101
https://apollogearco.com/blogs/news/night-vision-specs-explained
https://gloomgroup.com/blogs/night-vision-info/night-vision-specifications-understanding-what-they-mean

You shouldn't be chasing for spec values but they do exist and if you wanted to know what "better spec" values are there's a way to know which unit is desirable over another.
Most retailers won't post this info as they build NVDs to order, first come first serve, and depending on their grading scale of high, mid, low tier it may differ from retailers. If a retailer offer a โ€œready to shipโ€ fully built units they will list the spec values. Hand select is an option from retailers that will try to match to your spec requirements.

Some reputable retailers:
https://www.jrhenterprises.com/
https://steeleindustries.com/
https://nvisionoptics.com/
https://www.customnightvision.com/
https://apollogearco.com

SNR: signal to noise ratio, the amount of signal the tube can make compared to the noise
EBI: equivalent background information, how much false image appears in the screen through which the actual image has to show, sort of a noise floor of sorts
Halo: How big the circle of bloom is around lights
Photocathode Sensitivity: How sensitive the photocathode is
LP Resolution: Line pair res of the center of the image as measure against a standardized chart

If one spec is shit it negates the rest, if you have a halo of 2.0 it kinda fucks on an EBI of 0.20 if you want to do any kind of shooting and it's all a balance game

The numbers to meet or beat are
EBI under 1, preferably under 0.6 being great, 0.1 is gucci
Halo under 1, anything under 0.7 is awesome
SNR, over 25 anything over 30 is gucci
Photocathode, 1900+ is pretty great, 2500+ is stellar
Resolution of 64+ is good, 72+ is gucci

when it comes to SHTF situations i usually have defense in mind, in which case i'd be hunkering down in a ghillie suit and shooting at raiders that have night vision crossing my neck of the woods
if i really needed to launch a raid on somebody else, first of all i'd use a drone with explosives before ever risking my own neck, but if for whatever reason i cant do that then i'd get to using night vision
and i'm not even shitting on night vision particularly hard, i just mean to say that i'd get good thermals before i got anything night vision

The NV one is digital and very weaksauce. The TH has a very low res thermal sensor (256x192) and the detection / recognition ranges aren't great. It's also overpriced versus other options like buying a used Echo 3 or the new Ziyouhu thermal red dot.
The Oneleaf kicks its ass but is somewhat ($150) more expensive, not a reflex sight and much heavier.

Thermal runtime can be worked around. If it takes an 18650 and USB-C power packs, roll a couple Vapcell N40s that are 4000mah instead of 2600mah typical, then a 20000mah pack. This gets you a couple days if you use it strategically.
It is very difficult to keep thermals online at a high tempo for weeks without massive power reserves.
In any SHTF scenario they'd likely be out of juice in a few weeks unless generators / solar panels hold up better than expected and people don't huff carbon monoxide from the former indoors.

the holosun one is a fucking joke in comparison though, i've handled it irl and its' disgusting 256p resolution is blurry as shit, and i saw a video where they mentioned the thermal vision would literally cause screen burn in every once in a while that you had to fix by manually resetting the optic
get the oneleaf scope with the 50mm lens for the same price as the holosun and you'll have an infinitely better optic, comes with shit like a balistic calculator, reticles that have MOA markings, a larger range of color modes instead of just boring white/black hot, massive detection range, etc.
if you need a red dot too then just use quick detach mounts or something

Where the Holosun DRS-TH has an edge is that you can run it in overlay mode, then aim passive with i2 and get thermal fusion. However, target ID through NV through a mailbox through a 192 thermal overlay is going to be a PITA.
It's also a more suitable shotgun thermal because of the overlay mode. Better than SIG Echos. The Oneleaf isn't a thermal reflex sight, it's a conventional type thermal, but a 640x512 NUCless 60hz sensor for $1,500 is unbeatable. You will not find a thermal for that price with better specs. Even used 384 pulsars are often more.
Granted, in five years there will be something that smokes the Oneleaf. Thermals show their age quickly. I'd wager a 1280x1024 version will show up by mid 2028. $3k and it'll dominate the mid-range market.

Good shit and glad to help. Holosun really dropped the ball on DRS-NV / DRS-TH, which is disappointing because I love the rest of their stuff. My ARO gold dot is great. Everyone loves the IRIS.
I think the gameplan was that tariffs were going to be more damaging, so they would pull an Infiray and set up a totally unrelated US-based operation (RIX) that they would license various tech to. That's possibly why they expanded their lineup so quickly.

They really should have given it a 384 sensor. The sensor it has makes it a CQB optic at best, but with that burn in problem it's not great for that either.
Ziyouhu has a digi-NV / fusion sight on Aliexpress for $800 and otherwise similar specs.

their url is the same as their brand name, which you see anywhere the optic is mentioned, so go nuts
you might wanna wait for their 70mm lens if you want really high quality zoom but 50mm is probably enough for anything out to 500 yards
but man, i really wish i wasn't broke right now so i could afford one
they better not be out of stock or bankrupt by the time i save up enough or i'm hanging myself

Germanium's a bitch. You ought to see what the 100-150mm lenses for other optics cost. Don't even get me started on cooled thermals. Infiray's got cooled 640x512 fusion binoculars that cost upwards of $75,000. (TOM-E). In terms of contrast they'll blow the Oneleaf away, but you can literally buy 56 Oneleafs for the price of one Infiray TOM-E, if not more. Equip the whole platoon with good thermals.

So part of the issue is that there's now not only NIR I2 and LWIR thermal, but also SWIR and MWIR sensors. The latter two can do things I2 and thermal can't, but are rare enough that really only government or very, very rich commercial actors have them.
That will change, however. The time of the SWIR-NIR-LWIR super fusion scope will come.

SWIR lasers like the MAWL-CLAD and IZLID 1064nm provide active aiming solutions but are invisible to most NIR image intensifier tubes. You need a SWIR device like an ECOSI to see them, although certain tubes and some digital NVs are capable of seeing them too.
As such, SWIR allows you to "hide" from most forces equipped with NIR. That's huge.
Unlike thermal (LWIR), SWIR can see through glass and accurately identify objects like NIR. It also sees through smoke really easily, see vid:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHkPIOVJOCM
SWIR reflects absorbed and reflected light instead of heat, so it's kind of half NIR and half thermal in a way.
MWIR performs more like thermal but also with a mix of SWIR too. I believe they can see through glass, like SWIR, but can detect thermal signatures just like LWIR. Also, because a lot of gear is only tested against LWIR or NIR, it is possible SWIR / MWIR can detect them.

Cooled 1280x1024 MWIR sensor rated for .338 norma and .50 cal. Far as I'm aware the HISS-HD is the very, very best COTI.

I am really used to the 68MOA 'donut of death', since I have been shooting with a Eotech 512 for over a decade, and have become attached to it. Is it time to kiss the donut goodbye? I use the ring as a reference point for close range as well as bdc at long range. Are there any pros and cons im missing? The simplicity of a single dot seems worth a shot, especially for NV

640p-1280p is what i consider the high end
384p is the standard mid range for thermals and 640p is almost twice that quality, and 1280p is twice that
anything beyond 1280p is at the point where the price would be so prohibitively expensive that you'd need to seriously consider whether buying a thermal scope is better than affording the next year of rent

Great question, I'm not really decided myself. I'm not sure what would add the most capability, utility, and versatility to my setup overall.

Was thinking a monocular that can be clipped in front of a rifle scope as needed?

I have two rifles, and three optics on QD mounts. An aimpoint, an ACOG, and a mid-power variable. Something I could use as a monocular to scan, or have in front of the ACOG/variable seems ideal to me.

I use them pretty regularly but mostly because I sperg out and reconfigure my rifles.

Realistically I mainly used the QD to switch between my ACOG and Aimpoint on my SBR. ACOG most of the time, switch to aimpoint if I'm shooting with NVGs.

I only recently piggybacked a T2 on my ACOG and can aim passive through it with my NVGs so I may not need to swap at all anymore.

Yeah, I'm this close. Fortunately, my self restraint after the last 2-3yrs is still high. I may just get the 35mm and 50mm. I have a suppressed .22 that would love the 35mm and a REPR for the 50mm. I got in early on the Laserspeed for $700/each x2 so I've been patient. And you know what? Never lost my life without nvd, yet.

I've seen nvg10's go for as cheap as $110 used on ebay. Seems like they went down in price now that the nvg30 are the supreme budget digital night vision.

Slow 30fps but its the best NVG for the money for night walks.

I mean $100. Even cheapo laptops are $300 these days. Even restaurants cost to eat out like $70 nowadays. Even used xbox's cost $350.
Anything around $100 is a steal in 2025 for good tech.

Salutations all, I'm in need of some basic pointers. I had considered abandoning this place after the gr8 crash, but I realized that I still have not delivered on some promised things like the crew-served, dedicated nvg beretta 92fs, and such. Very soon, very nice, and I will make good on those, but I'm wrapping up an ACH helmet build right now. Here's where we're at:
>Suspension system
I'm thinking TW cam fit. I don't know if there are basic suspension systems that are good enough or if there is better in general out there now. If anyone knows anything better/cheaper, I'm all ears.
>Pads
4DT. I'm still early into my reading on these so idk what constitutes .5" vs .75" outside of one being more padded therefore slightly more comfy. Same thing applies. If know better or have suggestion, here for it.
>Cover/Paint
Would yall suggest modifying an ach cover, or should I just spray it down with rattlecan and call it a day? Most of my accessories will be going on arc rails anyways. Mono setup, so at most I may throw some spare batteries on velrco in the back.

I guess digital night vision is better than nothing, but if you can't drop a few thousand on a decent analog single tube setup you almost certainly have more important and impactful ways you should be spending your money in general.

My NVGs were an entirely superfluous disposable income purchase and it still would have been smarter to put the money in an investment or home improvement as these will sit in my closet 300+ days a year and not gain value.

My point stands doe gear queers are just larpers living in suburbanite american homes, they aren't actually serious about prepping, survival with the people around you.

If they were they'd buy and start a rural offgrid property, RV, build a cheap septic leach system, get a 1500-2000 gallon tank, water catcher on the roof, solar, food storage etc all of this can be achieved for 40-50k USD

He's right, it gets you in the game with no debt. There's ten jokers on reddit who put 4k into nods, can't pay the bills, their "partner" ABANDONED them, and now they gotta sell at a loss. Only used their nods once or twice. Damn shame.
If you have the income for good analog, it's a no shit comparison. GEN-3 will trash any digital NV. There is no contest. For people that don't have disposable income, whether because of expenses, a lack of cash flow, or because they're pu$$y-whipped and have no discretionary income, digital is their only option.
Remember friends. Divorce costs more than quad-nods. Quad nods cause divorce. Divorce leads to selling quad nods. Selling quad nods is sadness. Digital is two dinners for two at Chili's instead of the steakhouse.

$300 to be able to see in low light is a lot different than $5000 binoc setup.

I'd say the performance is comparable for the price. For civilians even a cheapo $200 one using IR only is fine since nobody can see IR with your eye and 99% of people are not equipped with $5000 NVG.

At worst you are outgunned by some 0.1% autist in america who spent $6000 on NVG

At average you're going against the same person with a digital NV

At best you're literally ahead of 99% of normies since most don't care about NVG and they have much bigger expenses to worry about.

For most people just getting $5000 NVG does not make sense.

Why are you mad? I consider myself poor but, I do own multiple gen 3 devices including binos. I don't hate all richfags. The ones that bother me are the subset who are noshoots or act like they are set for the boog simply through owning gucci gear without having done anything else. Having personally known people sort of like that hasn't helped. I'd much rather hang out with the poorfags in this general than them. As long you're not letting your gear get to your head or turn you into a Dunning Krueger then I have no problem.

These guys are too damn common. Fitness and training beat having marginally or even moderately better gear.
I think the guy with gen 2 binos who can run a 6:00 mile will trash the fatbody with quad nods who gets tired after a brisk walk down the street every time.

Even better to prepare for the "collapse" if it even happens, living somewhere that has good neighbors and truly offgrid. This should be the default because its a matter of principle. Utility jews and rent jews dont deserve my labor in the form of money.

I'd rather spend it on ammo, food or silver.

I can't take anyone seriously that lives on the east coast or west coast, and I can't take anyone seriously that still pays property tax or lives in a town on grid. You have to be offgrid or else you're just larping.

What will you do then when you dont have a 2500 gallon water tank or rain catcher? Rely on the utility companies to come save you? What will you do when your toilet doesn't flush, what will you do then? What will you do when your electric goes out and you cant heat anything up or cook a fire pit. What will you do then city boys?

I can't take someone who looks like this seriously.

Reddit has been a scourge for the preparedness movement. Defeatist "guess I'll just die!" attitudes and stealing activity away from the older traditional forums hurts newbies and drives away old heads. That's where influencers tend to gain ground. You didn't see this shit in the early 00s and late 90s. At most gunwriters and the occasional online personality, but nothing e-celeb tier.
If the "collapse" ever happens, how do you plan on hiding your off grid commune from opponents with drones? It is much easier to hide from thermals in the city, although the level and nature of human interaction in a post-collapse major city would be a stratospherically ugly urban combat catastrophe just waiting to happen.

1. Live offgrid and have sustainment systems in place
2. Get your own drones
3. Thermal surveillance and counter-surveillance methods
4. Work with neighbors to set up substantial perimeter defenses and ease logistical issues
5. Anyone that's underprepped needs loaner gear in exchange for work
6. Figure out protection against the full four-flavor spectrum. NIR (NV), LWIR (thermal), SWIR, and MWIR.
7. Everybody needs armor of some kind.
8. MEDICAL.

If we are talking about mad max shit, like no electricity, all services shut down for more than a year and not just regular civil unrest, full collapse of society

Well most people wont be traveling, all the gas stations are shut down and most normies do not save gas and they do not have solar. You'll probably be stuck where you're at. Cars will be pretty much useless.

For the average person in america if they arent dead already in the cities after the government blocks it off and the highways are jammed from everyone trying to leave "somewhere", it would take like 70 days(optimistic) to 100 days to walk on foot 500 miles with all the rest stops, water searching, sleeping, eating food, etc.

Valid points. I think what a lot of people miss about the drone scare is that drones need electricity. Large use of them requires an electrical footprint. If services are shut down for more than a year as you propose, it will be very, very difficult for anyone but ex-government actors to maintain electricity for that long.
Solar is one way, massive propane / diesel reserves are another, but both are ripe for sabotage.
My opinion is that the first few weeks of any "collapse" are going to be an absolute shitshow of biblical proportions, things will level out a few months in and by year 2 clear powers will emerge that will set the state of play.
Humans are social animals and warlords will eventually take control of herds. That's why it helps to have neighbors. You have to sleep at some point, need someone to watch your shit. Watch your ass. Watch and man the farm, patrol the treelines, handle the drones.

Realistically you need at least thirty men to defend any serious "compound" from a guerilla infantry siege unless there's a severe training / gear disparity in your favor (solid thermals + NV and opfor is trying to bum rush you at night with nothing).

It would be a good time to invest in hesco walling in storage containers on your homestead property. They just werk for fortification if you have a family you could easily setup a secure base. Not even 50 cal would penetrate it. To get a 500sqft perimiter it wouldnt even cost that much

You'd need a tractor to fill them, and your fucking house would look a god damn military base, but it would be secure. Just have someone patrol at night with thermal binocs with a ladder at each 4 corners with a combat rifle and plenty of ammo. You could realistically get away with 3 people in the apocalypse.

The reason for the price difference is that the sensor is 0.0001 lux vs 0.001 and the unit is also higher resolution. It's lighter and more compact than the NVG30 too.

For only $330 less than a 640x512 60hz Oneleaf with a ballistic calculator and rangefinder.
There's a reason why that X vision is half off. 25hz is ass cheese in a rusty blender. This is also too big for a pistol.
If you're talking about the Holosun DPS-TH, however, as a pistol sight, it's still packing the weak sensor of the DRS-TH and it's an even smaller mailbox. However, the overlay is at least better than a face-backlighting full thermal screen

Surely so. Most modern filter systems will suffice for everything, but viruses. Including pharmaceuticals waste. Fallout could be sketchy. Your filters will become contaminated, a spring is the best source. Portable, I like the Platypus Gravity Works. Stationary, I like the Big Burky. There are many beta tier copies of both. I also keep Aqua Pure tablets, unscented Dollar Tree bleach, an MSR Mini Worx and Geopress. I would be willing to drink dead dog water from any of these. Not sure what you mean by pharmaceutical waste, but molecular contaminants are usually much harder to remove than particulates, even viruses. Some very large macromolecules like monoclonal antibodies might get caught in reverse osmosis membrane filters, but most will go right through. Activated carbon filters are fairly effective against drugs and other chemical contaminants, but have a very finite lifespan when used for that purpose.

Fallout, on the other hand, is basically dust. It's very easy to remove. If there's enough fallout with high enough activity that your filter gets contaminated enough to pose a danger, then you're already fucked just from being in the environment.

One leaf doesn't seem very interested in doing anything like that. They will offer a QD mount for their mars thermal if you ask them though - which doesn't really do much.

why are thermal scopes seemingly so underused in the military?
i understand that for most encounters you want something that can have a wider point of view and is good for close range encounters, but for something like a squad automatic weapon, all kinds of machine guns, and soldiers who know they're going to be engaging at long range in the open, it almost even seems stupid not to use it
is it mainly an issue of durability?

Ive only used the peq 2, peq 15, and one of the dazzlers. Makes sense theres some more specialized stuff for longer range but the shear amount is wild, and you almost never see or hear about them.

Think of the lens like an eyeball. When it's focused on things far away things up close are blurry. If thin enough they can disappear from view entirely.
>>63886850
It's really meant to show the field as most of the new infographs do. I can slap some stars like I did on the radio infographic for preferred options.
>>63886857
Typical thermal runtime is 4-8 hours. Three weeks in the field always on requires 63 charges or battery swaps per man. That's a lot of 18650s for a squad. How do you plan on recharging?
Also factor in cost of germanium.
>>63887276
You just missed an LA-12 Glizzy sell on fleabay for $450. Talk about an eye fryer.
Laser eyepro is 100% a necessity as dazzlers and ebay blinding lasers gain prominence. Goes double for anything IR. That 1500mW VSLIM is both an eye and a skin hazard!

Its stronger than anything remotely practical by like 20x. Im never going to need to point a laser at something nearly 10km away but it would be cool to be able to.
Im for sure not treating these with the respect they deserve but theyre so far out of reach its not worth considering the real world complexities.

The VSLIM is more a focusable illuminator. It has a crappy spill but was intended to illuminate out to 2km for NV optics.
The LA-12 is lawsuit bait of the highest caliber but would be hypothetically useful in certain situations as a standoff deterrent device. Still LAWSUIT BAIT.

That's probably by design. Imagine some chucklefuck taking up position above a concert with two VSLIMs in his pockets, fifty yards away from the crowd. Waves them around towards the crowd the whole time. Hundreds of people will wake up the next morning needing (much) stronger glasses, and with higher risks of skin cancer, and nobody would ever know why. Your eyes do not react to IR like they do visible light. This will likely and hopefully never happen, since the VSLIM sells "second hand" for 8k a pop and is super rare.
Scary shit still. Now there are even stronger IRs out there in the multi-watt range, but they're not obtainable in the slightest.
