For anyone who has played New Vegas, what is the varmint rifle based on?
Anonymous No.63861993 [Report] >>63862151 >>63863578 >>63864273
Some .22 plinker, but then they figured a .22 wouldn't be relevant past the early game so they made it the more flexible 5.56.

It makes sense that they'd do it for ammo variety in the early game, since the Silenced 22lr Pistol is also available in Chet's shop and you start with a 9mm pistol. There's only two 22lr weapons in FNV, though: the Silenced .22 pistol and Silenced .22 SMG. Conversely there's 9 weapons chambered in 5.56mm. Making the Ratslayer a .22lr weapon would round out the roster well, IMO.

The issue is that due to how .22lr works mechanically the damage output was so low no used it.

From the wiki page it's based on a ruger 10/22 with a 25rnd mag, though I don't see the resemblence.

If you wanted to make a clone of it, I'd go with a cz 527.

Yeah, .22lr is pretty much worthless in New Vegas and has no real reason to exist, you already start out with a pistol that does twice as much damage and the .22lr pistol and if the Varmint Rifle was in .22lr it'd be thrown out as soon as you can get the cowboy repeaters, which is like 5 minutes after you start the game.
I guess you could argue it exists to be a holdout weapon but that whole mechanic is basically irrelevant.

Never played New Vegas but looking pictures on the wiki it looks like a Marlin XT-22 fitted with a very uncomfortable looking thumbhole stock.

Some generic and cheap .22

Also this.

>>63863883
It looks nothing like a 10/22.
Wouldn't be the first time someone put retarded info like that on a Wiki, I remember when the game was first shown off, legions and legions of 12 year old COD fanboys were swarming the page for the Hi-Power, angrily 'correcting' it to say that it's a heckin 1911. Not the dumbest editwarring I've seen on a wiki, unfortunately.

FO4 has the same issue that pipe guns are worthless since you start out with a 10mm and 10mm ammo is pretty easy to come by. What they should have done with .22lr is drop BBs from the game and fold their mechanics into .22lr while making the varmint rifle integrally silenced, which would give a place for early game sneaking builds and long-term viability for crit builds, particularly on hardcore mode.

The .22 pistol is a way to have a quiet weapon early in the game, but there's better stuff not far into it. The American 180 is alright against unarmored enemies.

Not sure why you'd call the holdout weapons a useless mechanic though.

The .22 SMG loaded with hollow points on a crit build is bonkers, but outside of that one use, yeah you're right.

The closest approximation I know of would be a Savage model 25. It was a mildly popular varmint rifle in small center-fire calibers such as 222 Remington that shares a lot of mechanical similarities to their smaller rim fire bolt actions rather than the larger model 10, 110 or Axis series.

They also did offer a thumbhole stock as a factory option.

Because there's only like two major areas in the game that holdout weapons ever become relevant in and pretty much all the quests in them will eventually give you back your weapons if any major combat is coming up, it makes the mechanic largely pointless.

>Played with mod to just swap ammo to .22lr
>Worked great
>Bulk .22lr fed it well
>Fell off when 5.56 and .308 scoped rifles became available not due to caliber but due to not having AP ammo, which actually was a good game feel
As a stealth archer the rat slayer with 5.56AP invalidates most of the rest of the weapon progression, being in .22 you feel the DT effecting your gameplay and actually have a reason to use more resources (higher value gun with more repair cost and valuable ammo) to keep up.

The most fun playthrough I've had, without mods, was playing a charismatic, well dressed, hitman type of dude. The silenced .22s with hollow points and crit centered builds is fun as shit, especially if you spend lots of time in New Vegas and other settlements.

real question is: what's the closest thing to a 22 kiddie rifle that you can buy thats chambered in 556

Mossberg Patriot or Ruger American.
Howa makes one too, but it's .223 only and doesn't use AR magazines.
