where should I start? I was considering joining border control and running with that for a while and seeing if that experience would get me into a PMC. I'd rather not be an outright boot like a cop or something if I can help it.

No "PMC" is going to take you without previous law enforcement or military background. 95% of these contractor jobs are you standing around doing nothing in some shithole. Plus the ones going around "shooting bad guys" are all former SOF with years of combat experience and security clearances doing contracts with the government. All Federal LEOs require you to have a bachelors degree and if you want to do Border Patrol you better learn Spanish as it is a requirement to graduate.

Just do security and get open carry certified. They can pay $35-$40 an hour someplaces which isn’t that bad. I’m going to get my permit in a few weeks so I can keep security as a back up option. It’s not that exciting but you get payed decent just to sit around with a gun which actual irl PMC’s basically do anyways.

Also I worked with a guy who was in the Iraq invasion and later went on to do some mercanary work in Lybia and other countries and he basically said you just sit in a barbwire outpost the whole time with m4s and m249s while lifting weights and watching tv for the slight chance that shit goes wrong so its really not all that. For a world so overwhelmed and enveloped by armed conflict, there are places where you can go such as Myanmar, The Philippines, Ukraine, Mideast [Syria/Iraq] or South America and join a volunteer force.
