On a side note, I hear fuddlore about Mauser actions not being strong enough for .308 Win, any truth to this?
Personally I have a Swede Mauser in .308 that’s never had a problem

We were talking a lot about 7.62 Hispano mausers last thread.
The issue is mainly due to some poorly conceived caliber conversions becoming unsafe over time
Although nato is also inherently higher pressure in less chamber mass. 308 win being even more so, with higher grain commercial loads. It can batter the rifle into unusable or unsafe conditions over time too, with bolt and chamber lugs stretching.

Got my AG-42 today and had an insane case head failure (Never gonna buy CBC ammo again but I think I’ll finish off the rounds I have left)
Guns fine but it’s dirty from shooting like 150 blanks
I might get a popsicle stick and some wood glue that can take some heat so I can fix a loose barrel band spring

I love my fr8 you wouldn't believe.
Paid 400 euro bucks for it with a bayo and some extra shitty german x51 surp
With half decent ammo (ggg, fiocci, ppu and norma tac308) you could expect 2moa accuracy
But the flameball, handiness and recoil coupled with the "g3 we have at home" sights mzkes it unbelievably cool for initiating newbies to slung shooting standing, kneeling and prone .

if you don't know how to properly shoulder a rifle, you'll learn quickly;)

98 bolt is PERFECTLY ABLE to withstand 308, I have a g98 that had its receiver reamed open to accept fucking 375 Holland and Holland Magnum by mauser themselves in the 60s...
The 94/96 bolt is a tad bit less strong but it should be fine just buy a set of headspace gauges if you're doubtful on your gun.

Don't expect to shoot anything but m80 like (147-155gr @2750ish fps) ammo in most mauser rebarreled in 7,62, they aren't really chambered for 168-180gr modern 308

Every gun I own is taken to the range at least once. Even my numbers matching G98/40 has had ~100 (non-corrosive) rds put through it. I understand people who go for museum-quality items, but I enjoy my collection of surp because it all looks like it was carried through an entire war or three and cleaned in the field.

Thats retarted. The Mauser is an unnecessarily strong action.

Spicy surp 7.92x57 mogs 308 in its potential to kill the user, and mauser enjoyers are still fine.

Probably comes from the same fuds the loaded arisaka rounds into smoothbore elementary school rifles and lost fingers. Haven’t stopped seething an spreading misinformation since

It’s small ring mausers like the 94 and 95 we’re usually talking about tho. Ones where chambers had to be shortened and bores widened if not a new barrel. And also usually not the German made or converted rifles …

Also 8mm is still less psi/MPa than Nato. I wouldn’t hammer my lugs with overpressure loads a lot.

IMO if you want a representative example of the M1911 as used in WW1 and unless the sights can be easily reversed then “no”. Original M1911s can have a relatively short lifespan due to the total lack of hardening to either frame or slide and so they aren’t great for shooters unless you handload some reduced power loads. Which might be called for anyway if you want to maximize accuracy potential. So if that’s already your jam, then go for it. I bought a repro specifically because I wanted to shoot full power .45ACP without worrying about damaging my original.

Wait I’m confused. This still means full fun “c&r”s require a stamp i.e. “controls”. An 03 FFL can’t just buy an Armalite 601 and put it in the little book, right?

Thing almost came out on its own all I had to do was just drop the mag and pick it out like it a stove pipe
MS paint is shit so I cant draw it but imagine a double feed but the round that failed to eject is the top 25% of the case and the round that failed to chamber slams into the case smashing it (like you see in the pic)
I think the broken case was actually out of the chamber fully but it was wedged between the bolt, the round after it and the entrance to the chamber. I really wish I would've taken a picture but thats the first time anything like that has ever happened to me so adrenaline was going. hopefully I find the other halve of the case eventually so I can get a better idea of wtf happened. I will say though that round left a bunch of yellow shit on the bolt face and firing pin

I did an experiment a few hours ago to see what was going on and ended up running more of that CBC ammo through the ljungman and my M96 and came to the conclusion that its dirty af since it was leaving several full pellets of unburnt powder in my barrel and in the Ljungman it was spraying carbon all over the cases while the PPU ammo wasn't getting dirty so I'm probably gonna sell all that ammo and just get S&B and PPU (although I did have 2 shells of S&B get really dirty and lock up my bolt in my m96 once)

Does anyone here know any good sources for P14 stamps, like this one for Austro-Hungarians https://thinlineweapons.com/Hungariae/Markings.htm? All the research I did came up with questions about specific markings on forums, and a general reference page would be cool

Gunsmithing nowadays is as simple as Lego and do not require adultering 130 year old designs.
Even back in the early repeating weapons era, Retrofitting old stores of muzzleloaders into single shot breechloaders was a net cost instead of just scrapping and surplusing them and moving forward with entirely new designs.

I think the most I got was 8 rounds before I was nearly pushed over lmao
The most fun I had I think was either the Suomi or the MG-42. I think I’m going to try and save about $2,000 to get a semi auto Suomi but when I go back in September I might just bring $200 and go ham on the MG-42 and M14
The guy that ran it was super chill and let me get 50 rounds of 8mm, 60 rounds of 7.62 NATO and 30 rounds of 7.62x39 for like $140
Rip to him though since he has to clean that corrosive 8mm out of that MG-42. Also the thing isn’t even a parts kit it’s complete import which was awesome

Not "easy" but if I can get my medical paperwork with the FAA sorted out I can get an associates degree in aviation which gets me up to a commercial license (need one of those to get a job flying) after that its just working from ~250 flight hours up to 1,000-1,500 and trying to get a bachelors degree in literally anything so airlines will be more likely to hire me
Probably won't end up exactly like that but as long as it goes in that direction I might own one at before 35, if I'm lucky before I'm 30 and if I'm SUPER lucky and I could have one at 25 years old (granted I'd probably need to get a loan for it but I could pay it off on a Pilot's salary)
I have the money to get the degree without debt (or at least barely any), I just need to get accepted and do good in college
>factor in what these things might cost 15 years from now.
True but as long as it only follows inflation your salary will probably be trailing it

They can go for less if they aren't all original, like $60k-$80k. Would probably be easier to buy a semi and figure out how to make a supersafety or FRT trigger.

Given the choice between not owning an MG-42 and owning one I’d for sure take the parts kit one but man the one I shot was all original, no parts kit shittery just a beautiful piece of history that had never been mangled or cut up
I will say as much as I’d want an original idk if paying an extra 20 grand is worth it

>super safety or FRT
MG-42 trigger is atleast 12 pounds so I doubt it would work
Also good luck explaining to the fed boy who just killed your dog that it’s actually a FRT and not just an unregistered full auto lol

Is there any significant price difference between a Bulgarian refurb M95 long rifle and an original Austro-Hungarian M95 long rifle? I'm debating between choosing 8x50R or 8x56R for my first M95. I know 8x50 will be more reload your own than finding some PPU 8x56 but I already reload so it's down to availability and price for the M95s for me.

Semi MG42 uses an AR15 trigger. Because it still uses a MG42 bolt, a super safety won't work. However, stuff like cassette triggers such as a binary trigger or rare breed FRT will work.

Considering the condition of most of the M.95s from RTI, I would strongly prefer one that didn't come from there. It seems RTI took a wire wheel to all of their M.95s, the examples I see posted are devoid of any finish left on them. Is your Hungarian M.95 in 8x50 or 8x56 and where did you find yours?

Just saying but blackout box or other picture/object overlay with 100% opacity is best as blur can be reversed pretty well since AFAIK it's a fixed algorithm (it will blur the same way every time assuming known settings, no randomness). We're just at the beginning of people realizing and tools for such a process being made but it's been reversed before. Swirl tools are even more reversible IIRC.

That's pretty sweet. I guess I got to join more Discord servers then, I haven't seen any M.95s at my LGS and gun show over the past 2 years now. I can't imagine very many M.95s were brought back from WWI given that no US troops were stationed near Austria-Hungary during the war and after.

The US 332nd Infantry Regiment served on the Piave Front. But since this rifle was in Czech service post-WW1 it would have to be a WW2 souvenir, not WW1. However the most likely path of this rifle from Czechoslovakia to the United States is as Czech aid to the Spanish Republicans during the Spanish Civil War and then bought by INTERARMS in the late 1950s.

"U.S. Army commission under Lt. Col. Sherman Miles surveyed the disputed region between river and mountains in January and February 1919 and made the crucial recommendation that the Karawanken frontier should be retained, thus opening the possibility of a plebiscite. Yugoslav representatives urged for a border on the Drava; American delegates however spoke in favour of preserving the unity of the Klagenfurt Basin and convinced the British and French delegations to support their plan of plebiscite for the entire Klagenfurt region."

Approximately 300,000 Mannlicher rifles "of all models" as per Manowar's site. I don't know how many Mauser rifles they already had, but Czechoslovakia purchased 70,000 Gew.98s from France and 66,000 from the Netherlands in 1919.

How would that even work? I looked around and apparently those triggers will fit into the ar-15 style trigger but wont actually work due to how the bolt carrier group is or something not being suited for it (FRT's need an M16 style one from what I was reading) I did see some people saying you could remove part of the BCG on the MG-42/M53 to make the clearance work but I've seen zero videos or pictures on how to do that

I have to stake a Mauser sight. Been putting it off because I’m not going to be satisfied setting it with the time constraints and inability to constantly check where the shots hit at a public range.

If I ever find some good close public land I’d probably spend nearly a day shooting it until I’m satisfied to set it.

I don't have any comparison with other light machineguns, but I like it a lot. I still have only two mags that were in the set. 30-06 Breda Bren mags are kinda unobtainable here.

HELP! I need /k/ advice since im not in the US:

Range buddy offered me a M1 Garand sniper. All original. I dont know which sniper but i guess the late one.
He wants 2500. Condition good.

Is a garand sniper worth it?
what to look for to avoid problems?
Can the optic be adjusted / zeroed easily or is it a special tool little setting range nightmare?
Can the optics be taken off / on easily or is it soldered / bolted in place ?

M1 is cool as fuck but 2500 is a lot if you have some mouths to feed, thx for any advice in advance.

pam for good feels.

Anyone have one of these MK2MOD1s?

I already own several M1 Garands and probably 2000-3000rds of 30-06 but I've thought about getting one of these. Especially since most of the Garands and ammo are back at my parents place and since I'm living in an apartment I'm trying to keep my overall gun footprint as low/consolidated as possible.

I think if you're going to get a 7.62NATO M1 for shooting it would be better to get the .308 Expert. Get the MOD1 if you want the USN history. I don't think you'd see much difference in performance of M2 vs M80, and if you already handload to maximize accuracy does the convenience of 7.62NATO availability matter?

I mainly want the NATO for the historic aspect. I don't really care for any "modern" / "reproduction" so to speak CMP M1 Garands that use modern commerical parts.

Because I also have an M1A and plan to get an FAL soon it would be nice to just only have to buy 7.62 NATO and I can start selling some of my 30-06 (at least the delinked stuff that isn't already on clips) to boomers.

i mean, look mat the trigger group. super simple.
front sight not attached to bore but its housing is another simple approach. muy bueno for accuracy too.

it was just mass produced and looks nice. so there are enough parts around to fix broken stuff. and thats about it.

It's just Browning's double hook trigger my man. It's simple enough to disassemble and reassemble with zero tools. AKs use the same trigger design.

The fuckiest part of the Garand's design is the op-rod, never heard or read anyone complaining about the trigger group or front sight lol.

I was a couple months back. British SMLE converted to .410 musket for Indian use. Still needs a safety. Still have like 3 whole .303 cases to choose from for fireforming. Too much other stuff going on to get to a point I can fix the safety and get ammo for it. Murphy's Oil Soap cleaned the wood up well and linseed to make it look less like dry sundamaged deck wood. They were really neglected AFAIK, like in stacks in a warehouse with a damaged roof neglected. Then they were deadstock in the US for at least 20 years lol.

I think it was Mattias Wandel who tested several wood glues and gorilla glue came out pretty good overall, maybe even over Titebond II. I still hate that fucking foaming glue though lol. I have a bottle, it has its uses, but I remember when it was new-ish and everything in my town suddenly became half-ass repaired with that stuff with a half inch wide foamy bead peeking out of the cracks with foamy drips lol. But it is pretty strong when used right. I just don't trust myself to not over-apply causing the need for cleanup work. Wonder if I should be using that for outdoor wood repairs instead of Titebond; should be more waterproof.

I’ll show you how it comes out tomorrow. I was pretty sparse with the glue. If it breaks I’ll use more or start sanding and filling. wiped the excess away with my little oily toothbrush.

>gorilla glue came out pretty good overall
It depends a lot on what you're expecting. Gorilla glue will bond to a lot of difference materials and is very strong, but it expands when it cures, so it can push joints apart and almost always requires a fair amount of cleanup work. Titebond doesn't do that, if used correctly and with adequate joint prep, it can be as strong as the original wood. Titebond is a good choice if appearance and joint tolerances are important. If you just need to stick stuff together, especially if there are gaps or other problems with joint prep, then gorilla glue is a better choice.

Also, titebond makes a waterproof version for outdoor use.

Probably, but we need some pictures to make a proper assessment. Assuming this is the Model 1891 it is not uncommon to find them with crests intact because they were surplussed at a later date than most of the 1891 infantry rifles. However factory-original matching carbines are less common because, since these carbines stayed in military service longer than the rifles, they were more likely to be refurbished and rebuilt and have replacement parts force-matched or not matched at all.

Not too bad; very hard to notice. Maybe shim under the ring shaped nuts with a piece of cardstock or a shimstock "washer"? Ditto under the screwheads opposite. Will make the screwhead and nut sit slightly proud but may fix it. Also if those are the original screws and nuts make sure you have them paired correctly and in the right holes; lots of wear does silly things when it comes to parts fitting.

Also, and/or shim under the wood grips. Can't do a ton but all combined may make up for wear and wood compression/rust damage under the screws and nuts, maybe. Easily tested and easily reversed too.

NTA(s) but I use the cheap ass $12 set of bits from Advance Auto and I never had a bit break on me. You can also custom grind bits to fit weird flatheads that are in-between standard sizes with no worry because another set is a whole $12 and a drive to Advance Auto. The ones at the counter in the yellow case, clear lid. Surprisingly good, especially for the price. And somehow still $12 all these years later. The clear lid likes to get cracks when thrown in a range bag but oh well.

Gorilla glue is also extremely caustic on metal components. When making scabbards for example, even the wood can rust steel if it has a high tanin content. Rule of thumb is the darker the wood the more tanin it has. Anyways yeah please be careful with gorilla glue near metal. Hide glue and fish/rabbit glue is a good historical adhesive that can be removed with applied heat but be very careful as that shit will get everywhere. The titebond hide glue in the brown bottles they sell at your local woodworking store is good.

I bought two really pretty blocks of wood cheap from a local guy who sells kiln dried wood for knife scales and pen blanks as well as handmade furniture. We talked a couple times over a few months and I was excited to make some replacement grips from them, but he was strangely absent from his normal setup for a while. Come to find out he died and now I'm too pussy to continue without working with shittier wood. Shame, too, because he offered services for kiln drying wood and using a kiln to disinfect/kill off bug infestations in antiques (beetles, etc). I think he underpriced his blanks, though they very well may just have been offcuts of furniture stock for him. I miss him and his business as he was the kind of guy that would talk and give advice on woodworking for as long as you needed; I think an older guy runs the business at other locations but it's very reduced compared to what that guy offered.

Have you never used a drill in your life or something? The barrel pin hole is literally a pilot hole, as long bit is straight and the barrel is set correctly, you'll be fine. Hell most "gunsmiths" these days are lego builders and know jack shit about actual gunsmithing.

I am fully aware of false confidence, I believe seating the barrel is easy but I could also be wrong and drill the barrel into Swiss cheese.
Then again its the top of it and might be low power enough that several notches wont hurt it?

>never been to a surplus store as i mostly buy online
>decide to go check one out maybe ill find some pouches for my magazines
>go in, two old geezers behind a counter mean mugging me (There was another person already there and they were doing the same to him)
>Ask a question to break the ice "Do you have any magazine pouches?" Geezers loosen up a bit
>"Yeah we should just look in this section and you should find some"
> Don't find the pouches I was looking for (AK pouches) Find mosin pouches instead and some mosin oil bottles and holsters
> old geezer asks what holster i was looking for, told him i was looking for a romanian tokarev holster
>he picks one out of the pile, has $50 price tag with string attached
>Geezer says "here's one, don't mind the price" as he walks back behind the counter
>Kind of a weird thing to say but okay, maybe the price tag is not the actual price?

Here is what i got: 4 mosin pouches, romanian tokarev holster, 2 mosin oil bottles; Mind you these were not in NOS immaculate condition, everything was pretty worn with torn seems, dented bottles etc.

>Go to check out
>Geezer tallies everything up
>"That'll be $115.42 cents."
>"I left my card in the car let me go grab it"
>Get in my car and leave

Are all surplus stores this shitty or did i have a bad experience? How are 4 mosin pouches, which go for $5 a piece all day and a shitty tokarev holster and 2 mosin oil bottles tally up to $115?

What are your surplus store stories i.e. fudd IKNOWWHATIGOT stories?

any surplus store, or gun store for that matter where the owners are visibly old as fuck and appear "grumpy" you have only 2 options. They are either based as fuck, or complete assholes. There is no middle. Roll the dice.

Factory. After the British weren't there to whip the Indians into doing things properly anymore, pretty much all of their guns have wound up having really shit finishes. I have a 2A Ishapore, one of the early ones before they switched the rear sight design over once they ran out of SMLE parts entirely, and it has a cheap, flaky black finish that is bubbled in some spots. Interestingly has a sort of gray undercoat to it though which I haven't seen on any other Ishapore Enfield.

I wonder if the T-20 would've been adopted as the standard infantry arm if the invasion of Japan took place.

A cool video idea would be comparing the T-20, BM-59, and M-14 and how they all tried to tackle the problem of giving the Garand a mag. Of course the only one who can make that is Ian but he's too busy shilling Finnish tactical pants despite having access to the Springfield Armory museum.

The days of $1 mixed surplus belt bins and $5 camo tops is over man.

I caught it at the very end at I. Goldbergs in Philly. That basement was a magical place in the early and late 00's.

Surplus as it was is over, man. It's for collectors and fashionistas now.

~$3300 after shipping, tax and other fee’s
Still $1000 cheaper than any you’ll find at a gun show

Probably not. The benefit of the magazine is hard to justify the cost of interrupting the garand production lines and then needing to retrain soldiers on the new weapon and deal with the logistics of correctly supplying blocs to soldiers with the old garand and magazines to soldiers with the new one.
If the T-20 was truly worth it, it would have been brought out for Korea
