for those who have shot both how do the ergonomics of the ak and m4 compare?
the ar seems to not "make use" of extra space above the bore that the ak does and this allows the thumb to go over the ar guard so that its held like a pipe but as a result of the low height over bore, optics risers are used. ive heard some complain they dislike having to peek so high over cover with the ar to shoot but this allows a modern grip
on the ak a bigger long stroke piston and spring is in place to use that space and the sights dont need to be elevated as much as a result of the added height over bore. would elevated ar15 style sights give any extra visibility or performance edge? its like the difference between an ar15 with a raised dot and an ak with a dot and no riser (to avoid chin-weld)
or im falsely attributing because there are both short stroke ars (hk416) and aks (vz58) and their form is mostly retained from the original gun

The AR, especially the modern AR, has probably the best ergonomics in a rifle, and it has literally three quarters of a century worth of mastery with regards to manual of arms.
The AK is cool but inferior in a lot of ways.
AK iron sights are also fucking dogshit. Basic carry handle sights are where it’s at. Additionally the rear of the stock being exactly in line with the bore on an AR makes zeroing optics way easier

With all that being said, it's a very easy day class where the instructors will do their best to make sure you understand and pass you however they can.
