Major airshow with new planes and things. Post planes. siae.fr
Anonymous No.63868681 [Report] >>63868710
Please help out with posting. Thread can't run for a month, more like a couple days.

I will focus on new aircraft and equipment. Discuss deals as much as you'd like but don't necessarily wait around for me to catalogue all of them.

▶Israel

Israeli booths were covered during the show. There was a lot of media about this, but it follows on (attempted) outright bans by the french at both Eurosatory and Euronaval:
https://desuarchive.org/k/thread/61886045/#q61957818

Since we literally can't see the products that were covered up, I won't be looking for recently announced israeli weapons. At least a few were going to premiere at this show.

Checking whether products from Israel's major companies (Elbit, Rafael, IAI, etc.) are rebadges or relaunches of existing products is always annoying, so this is fine.

▶Thales × KNDS unveil RAPIDFire Land

A land-based variant of the 40mm RAPIDFire Naval defense system, in two configurations:

1. Semi-mobile for site protection, with a 20-foot platform set up on the ground that can be readily moved and re-deployed to other locations.

2. Mobile, with the 20-foot platform mounted on a vehicle to protect high-value assets in the theatre of operations.

The french procurement agency DGA has ordered 48 × RAPIDFire Land.

>A KNDS representative told Janes, "The turret is more compact than for example the Skyranger 35 mm turret. We originally put this on the CAESAR [self-propelled howitzer], which is a 6x6. The CAESAR gun module weighs seven tonnes, [while RapidFire weighs] just three, so it can go on a VBCI [véhicule Blindé de Combat d'Infanterie] 8x8, or Patria's AMV [Armoured Modular Vehicle] 8x8."

The super tuc would slaughter this boi in every matchup. They're not the same class of aircraft. The shark is an ultralight: you can cut most supertuc specs in half or ¼ here. It's a hobby aircraft now in the process of being armed.

Compare:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embraer_EMB_314_Super_Tucano#Specifications_(EMB_314_Super_Tucano)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shark.Aero_Shark#Specifications_(UL)

Upside?

The advantage of using the shark for short-range cUAS air patrol is that it's extremely cheap and plentiful. You need mass in the sky more than you need combat prowess when swatting down a swarm attack. Adaptation of the lightest available aircraft for anti-drone duties has been a good idea so far in Ukraine.

Biggest downside?

Eh. Having seen some of those builds in the flesh, with a couple work-related ridealongs and second-hand experience of the typical shootdowns, my worry has always been unpredictable targets. One day soon, a shahed-like, flying a preprogrammed course, behaving like we've seen a thousand times in the past, will simply use a 20 cent sensor to detect an uncomfortably close aircraft and detonate.

Ukraine has already lost manned aircraft in drone chases, though none so far to reactive behavior from the drones. sUAS already demonstrate evasion in A2A combat with interceptors, ex. vidrel >>63776555 and >>62786928. Sometimes autonomous, sometimes by the pilots.

But the tactical difference in a manned chase is that you don't have to avoid: all you have to do is collide. As a drone, knowing that you're the target of a manned system usually makes your pursuer the highest-value thing you can hit.

It's because of gaza. They tried to shut out the Israelis for eurosatory and euronaval too, like I mentioned. This time, they went with a ban on displays of "offensive weapons." So a few stands without hardware displays were left to their own devices. Everyone else was covered.

https://reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/organisers-shut-four-main-israeli-company-stands-paris-airshow-israel-says-2025-06-16

The changelog so far:

● Across france's major tradeshows, joint israeli-european ventures have been left up. Example: Euro-Trophy.

● As of last euronaval (Nov 2024), some companies without any participation in the gaza war managed to showcase their goods – and they didn't have to remove weapons from their display models or anything like that. Example: Israeli Shipyards. https://desuarchive.org/k/thread/62820683/#q62873528

● This time, you're shit out of luck if your booth has hardware.

IMO the real reason is that they want to avoid protests and heightened risk of terror attacks. The germans get memed for needing alles in Ordnung, but ime the french are consistently more draconian whenever there's a perceived threat to social order. Hell, it's even illegal to perform genetic testing for paternity results in france. Social order above all.

The European aerospace company ArianeGroup is showcasing two models of long-range tactical ballistic missiles, potentially suitable for use as "Deep Precision Strike" weapons, at the Paris Air Show currently taking place in France. According to well-informed sources, the models, known as Missile Balistique Tactique (MBT), are conceptual designs developed for and offered to the French armed forces.

Almost certainly related to the european ELSA initiative.

Nah, there's just no desire for a more expensive middle ground. Faster than a helicopter and more expensive, slower than an airplane and less versatile (the fwd propulsion and lift generating parts are extra weight to carry when using VTOL, low useful load). It inherently limits itself to extremely niche applications.
Anonymous No.63884767 [Report] >>63884940
>>63884585
The racer layout trades a single tail rotor driven by a long driveshaft for two smaller driveshafts driving smaller propellers, but it's otherwise identical to a regular helicopter. It doesn't require the extra 4 electric motors and propellers dedicated to vertical flight alone like in most evtols with wings or the complex tilt rotor mechanism like you'd see on a v-22 osprey, which arguably are the more expensive middle ground you are talking about rather than the racer.

They're all vaporware because they're worse than helicopters and airplanes. I'm just not talking about them so your point is kind of whataboutism. I am refuting specifically the "no desire for improvement" point in saying this: It's not an improvement. It's better at something that doesn't really matter in helicopter use cases (speed) at the cost of something that does matter (expense and useful load). Powered lift (evtol) garbage is doomed because it has zero safety factor (cannot autorotate) and abysmal energy density (batteries). Tiltrotor is doomed for a similar reason to "racer" (extremely expensive but not solving a problem that is worth the expense)

This is the same reason we keep seeing Mooney fail. Speed is not important enough to sacrifice load and pay a massive premium for. Modern Mooneys are notorious for having shit tier capacity which really limits their practicality and limits them to a very small market.
Anonymous No.63885188 [Report] >>63885209
>>63884940
But it doesn't inherently sacrifice weight and useful load, it uses a main rotor just like a regular helicopter. At worst, you could argue the racer specifically reduced rotor size to optimize top speed vs load, yet compared to say the westland lynx, for a similar power to weight ratio it exceeds it in terms of speed and range. I haven't been able to find empty weight figures, so no idea of carrying capacity, but 10 passengers only seems low in the 8 ton gross weight class until you consider the quoted range; helicopters in the same weight class like the h175 and aw189 can only carry up to 12 people on board to reach those same 400 nautical miles...

And if carrying capacity is the decisive factor, then the most popular configuration should be the coaxial or intermeshing rotor, which outdoes the tailrotor configuration.
Anonymous No.63885209 [Report] >>63885666
>>63885188
>But it doesn't inherently sacrifice weight and useful load
Yes it does. Stopped reading here. Adding a bunch of framework, multiple gearboxes, at least one clutch, two propellers, is extra weight. Do you think this stuff is made of magic? It weighs nothing? It costs nothing? The helicopter has to lift it you goofball, and it isn't necessary since demonstrably almost nobody cares about making helicopters faster since nobody is spending money on multiple fast helicopter concepts over the past 50 years.

Isn't the selling point fuel economy by slowing the rotor during cruise due to lift from the box wing?

Anonymous No.63885733 [Report] >>63886448
>>63885666
Helicopters have absymal fuel efficiency so yes, it's a design criteria that it is more efficient during high speed flight than a conventional helicopter would be, though you will not see a conventional helicopter doing 400km/h cruise anyway. The problem with the design is that unless it's taking off using translational lift and its wings, it has to lift all of the extra weight like a conventional helicopter during the phases of flight in which having a helicopter is useful. There have been helicopter concepts with propellers and pseudo wings for decades, the reason they haven't caught on is because helicopters are already massively expensive and if all you get out of it is a faster, longer range helicopter, you run into an economic issue. To how many potential customers is it worth it to have a massively expensive specialized long range high speed helicopter instead of an ordinary turboprop airplane or a conventional helicopter that takes you to an airport to fly longer distances on an airplane.

As for control surfaces, they're mandatory. At higher speeds there are controllability issues inherent in using the rotor alone.

Thinking that I make the webms by hand is preposterous, like thinking I'm doing all these collages by hand. The only one I didn't make ITT is >>63872308 (the collage is the source media) and guess fucking what, it's shit rez and misaligned.

The problem with helicopter footage is fundamental to the size constraint and the limitations of encoders. Rotors always look like ass at low filesize in vp9. There's nothing to be done about it.

As always, you will quickly give up in this back-and-forth. (In saying this, I am encouraging you to reactively further bump the thread, yes. You cannot win. You could try cutting your losses with a quick moron reply like >tranny lmao.)

>racer
I don't particularly care if the racer is a commercial success. It's a demonstrator. More generally, caring about rotorcraft sale outcomes is setting yourself up for failure.

As ugly as the M-345 is I fear that it's going to steal sales from the M-346 simply due to its cost. It costs to operate is similar to an high end turboprop and poorer countries will be tempted to use it both for basic training and LIFT without buying a dedicated LIFT platform which is the 346.
