They get a percentage fee of the bail amount (10-20% apparently) from the bondsman. If a fugitive is out on a million dollars bail, that's $200,000. Of course that's rare as shit that they could post $100k to a bondsman and means you'd be going after a fugitive with substantial assets. That means a lot of assets to sue your ass.
This is only speculation, but bounty hunters probably make their bones working long hours going after much smaller fry guys with no assets to hire lawyers with and a poor understanding of the system. A little money here, little money there.

In short; no it's not. You're right it's a terrible job.
The reason bounty hunting is attractive is that it's 'cool', it's easy most of the time, and it has a low barrier to entry.
The big problem is that if you are doing it full time you need to chase down almost all the bounties in an area (or areas) that have enough to sustain you. This means you're taking the dangerous and hard ones too.
If you just do it part time (and especially if you have the right connections) you can make a quick buck for grabbing a guy every once in a while. But if you live in some suburban or rural county you're probably just not going to have enough people jumping bail to be equivalent to a full-time job, even assuming you catch them all.
Basically the way to do it is being a former cop/PI with connections that just goes and picks up people who are non-violent at their (trap)house when they don't show up to court. Anything else they just ignore and they keep a dayjob.

Generally not. The personal risk of injury or death is very high just to bring an accused to court so the bail bondsman doesn't lose the deposit.

Chasing retards down isnโ€™t whatโ€™s lucrative. Those guys make basic security guard money and a lot of the times itโ€™s just a side hustle for them. Itโ€™s getting criminals caught in essentially a cash out title loan on their home or car so they can get out of a cell.

From a friend who actually did it for a living for a while, it depends. You have retards that are kitted out LARPing like cops because they couldn't pass the police exam then you had actual bondsmen like him who simply just went after them wearing a suit. Turns out, people on bail that actually need to be hunted down are a lot more privy to working with you when you're not looking like a fake cop and threatening them with pepperball guns like a fucking moron

Probably one of the worst jobs.

Imagine being a cop without backup that pursues trouble.
All the liability and requirement to properly arrest, but no help when things get violent, or after things are violent and the District Attorney is deciding whether to pursue charges. Along with civil lawsuits whether you do things wrong or not since anyone can sue.

You must be poor with few assets to be willing to assume the risk for the reward, and will remain poor after dealing with lawsuits. With a high chance of catching criminal charges if people don't agree with how some of your arrests go.

The big money for Dog was the tv deal which I am sure allows him to afford a small team.

>>63869983

Great now you just made it more likely someone else recovers your bounty or they turn themselves in and you get no payout. If you are close enough to use that it isn't going to assist in the apprehension and most of the work tracking them down and getting close is done.

>The big money for Dog was the tv deal
Actually he was a bondsman first and foremost, which is where the money is. He just grabbed the guys who jumped bail himself rather than contracting a third party.
Bondsman take 10% of bond as payment then put up the bond themselves, and keep the payment. So if your bond was $10k, you'd pay Dog (or another bondsman) $1k, and then they pay the court $10k. Once you show up to court (willingly or dragged in) they get their $10k back and keep your $1k. It's a bit risky since they're out the $10k if they can't track you down, but there are other things in place as well, like a co-signer they can garnish wages from or collateral that was put up. Overall it's basically a riskier version of payday loans (extremely high interest short term loans) but with much higher capital requirements.

this, I was a probation officer for a while and we had to transition from business casual to tacti-cool over a few years. People where far more on edge when we would visit for a regular meeting wearing a vest and belt, before they'd offer us coffee and have us sit at the table for a conversation. Now they just stand at the door, a few inches open, hoping their neighbors don't see the two men in vests at their door. Like it makes sense, some of the neighborhoods we live in are YN filled, a lot of our offenders in the city are getting probation that would be a prison sentence in most sane courtrooms, and I'm not paid nearly enough to deal with a tweaker without a gun.

Yeah, my friend said that he's had it more than a few times that he'd simply know where who he's going after is and he'd just walk up to them and either ask to see them or outright just tapping on their shoulder and informing them to come with him. No issues and no scene to be made. I really wonder just how the fuck bounty hunters like the "pink pistols" of yore and outfits today even stick around with the inherent stigma of being kitted out being a "threat" to whoever they're trying to hunt down.
>I'm not paid nearly enough to deal with a tweaker without a gun.
And that's the thing. These guys aren't cops yet they're unironically risking getting shot when they're only legally able to be armed with a pepperball gun when doing their job as a bondsman. Why even do this? You'll need the police regardless

If it were conventional bounty hunting, I would focus more on information-gathering and then report the target to the authorities. Most bounty hunters can just give info to the authorities and collect bounties that way.
If I were in a somewhat "lawless" territory, I'd use my Beretta or perhaps carry a double-action-only snub nose revolver as well as heavy gloves for catching knife blades and punching.

Bounty hunting is just a way to keep low-class trash occupied with hunting low-class trash so that there's 2X less trash fucking up society. As a bonus, sometimes trash gets killed.

I bounty hunted exactly once. I used to work for a car repo company, and one of the guys I was partnered with was a licensed bounty hunter. Repos had been slow, and he offered me $200 to help him pick someone up. I said sure, he said cool, gave me an old cop surp vest and an 870 and told me to look mean and let him do the talking. I stood beside him and mean mugged a bunch of hoodrats while he convinced the dude it was better to come with us than wait for some trigger happy cop to come by. I got my $200, it was fun.

that was my first thought, but then I wondered why you'd want to look like that. I guess it does help strike fear into the people you're after though. that shit is uncanny.
