Navy RDC advice below. If anyone wants to add, feel free to share

>PACK LIGHT. A lot of people ask what they should pack. Use the little Navy drawstring bag they gave you & pack a few hygiene products in there. Save yourself the pain of having to carry a stuffed civilian backpack alongside all your military issued gear the day after graduation. It sucks.

Its really not so bad if you study. The thing with our advancement rate, in my opinion is that people see that our quotas are a bit tight, and then they don't bother studying at all. a few months later after the exam and they act like they have the right to be pissed off at the system when all they did is some half hearted study of a quizlet they found online that they didn't even make two weeks before the exam. If you study early when the advancement bibliographies are released, and you study frequently, as in an hour or two a day, you'll be fine. All you have to do is score better than the assholes who didn't bother. The people on reddit who complain about it are the types I've seen all too many times in the fleet. They do their job reasonably well, but also don't feel like they should have to study/be tested for subjects that are outside of their immediate scope (such as lab, dental, supply or medical programs) and then get mediocre scores. Speaking from experience, I picked up E-4 within my first year in the fleet (then you had to take advancement exams for HM3), E-5 when I hit my 6th year (I was really happy as an HM3 with the Marines, didn't want to advance and not get to be a line HM), and then E-6/HM1 when I hit 8 after being waived TIR requirement. All from the exam, never pursued MAP. Ironically, when advanced to HM1 the quotas were the easiest at around 11% (at that grade), when I picked up HM3 they were around 3%, and HM2 around 1-2% IIRC. HM is a very big rate, so don't let the quotas discourage you.

My information is outdated because I got out back in 2021, but I recall IC having a pretty abysmal advancement rate. GSM was pretty bad for a while. Any "popular" rate could have shitty advancement quotas. The easiest way to find out is to look up the most recent exam cycle results, and that'll break it down by rate and you can see what the quotas were for each rank, how many sailors were eligible, and how many of them actually got advanced.

I wouldn't say pick in it's truest sense, but basically. Going out of school, your preferences play a small part when weighed with your academic ranking. You first duty station could very well be a hospital or clinic, as the idea is that it's beneficial to send junior Corpsmen to these types of duty stations to gain some skills. Your first set of orders will be two years. Once you're a year out from when you are supposed to transfer/PCS, you will actually get to pick your next duty station based on what's available. My advice there would be to research which units interest you. Some common mistakes I see with this are junior corpsmen thinking greenside/FMF is all the same experience, so I'll see in their selections that they want very large organizations like a Marine Division, or Air wing, or CLB - doing this you could wind up anywhere from a field hospital, to an artillery unit, engineer unit or helicopter squadron. What I recommend is if you want to go to an infantry unit, find out what their names are (such as 2nd, 6th, and 8th Marine regiments on the east coast) and to be more selective from there.

If you told me four years ago I would heavily be considering joining the army now I would have said bullshit, no way.
I've been destitute for way too long now. No long term goals in life, only an associates because college drop out, 0 social life, family is confused why I'm not further along in life.
Even though I'm older than the average recruit I'm not unfit or lazy. I work out 6 days a week. I'm tolerant of having very little in life and barely if ever complain.
