The idea is that the spikes will separate the contact wires at the front of FPV drones. These wires need to touch to complete a circuit that sets off the payload.

Wrong.
Idea is that quad-copter propeller catches on spike fist and it turns it way before fuse acts.
Its better for heavy armor, as HEAT charge pointing away wouldn't do damage. Though on light armor you have some slim chances drone would been thrown away without detonation at all.

All of these attempts at logical explanations are cope. It's purpose is to convince the mobiks inside that they are safe enough that they become willing to drive this shit directly into the hottest front line the world has seen in decades.

I'm sure we'll have conclusive proof that it doesn't work soon enough once it makes it's way to the front and inevitably eats an FPV.
Anonymous No.63881171 [Report]

actually, the real purpose of these constructions is to keep the mobiks making them busy enough to not be assigned to the front lines.

From Wiki: The Buzzards are a tribe of Russian speaking bandits that roam the Wasteland. They are minor antagonists in both Mad Max: Fury Road and the Mad Max video game.

History
The Buzzards are a scavenger group comprised of Russian descents that live in underground burrows called the Sunken City. They have survived underground through cannabilism and salvaging what they can from destroyed vehicles.

Yes, that's what they _might be_ attempting, but as most said it wouldn't usually work. That's the whole idea about 2022 cope cages, which were installed expecting the need to protect the tank from a javelin missile. Like yeah, technically it's a sound idea, but it obviously wouldn't work.

the US did experiment with spikes to disrupt shaped charges
the idea was to "Catch" the projectile without detonating it
they were found to be ineffective against anything faster than the panzerfaust 30 which had enough energy to simply smash through the spikes

they were also used in the pacific, but they were only on the roof and engine deck of the tank, and the idea was to prevent the magnetic mines from touching the armor plate and making them more likely to slide off
they were also only used in prototypes because if the mine didnt slide off, it didnt provide enough standoff to prevent penetration
and obviously, any crew bailing out of the tank might get spiked

even back in WW2, it was admitted by basically every side that makeshift armor was one giant cope
nothing you could make in the field would ever help outside an extremely narrow, tiny situation

the US officially claimed they were useless and prohibited them, but turned a blind eye to all manner of sandbagged monstrosities because it helped crew morale
germans and japanese straight up banned the use of makeshift armor, though a few concrete-encased stugs have been photographed, the japanese threatened to beat crews that were caught modifying their tank in any way (including hanging their bags off the side)
the soviets were pretty indifferent to field modifications and would go so far as to make offiical versions of them, like bedspring armor made of actual expanded metal mesh instead of bed springs

Not really, various types of slat and spaced armor grating works if done right, it's just that it's not cruise control for invincibility.

It's more about the army wanting things to be uniform overall.

>various types of slat and spaced armor grating works if done right
spaced armor did work, but only against 14.5mm rounds and not against shaped charges
but schurzen was a specially designed, factory-installed, modification and not a field mod

>It's more about the army wanting things to be uniform overall.
after experimenting with sandbags, concrete, spiked armor, and mesh armor they found that none of them protected against shaped charges except in very unlikely scenarios or against the much earlier, almost totally replaced, panzerfaust 30
the reason they banned it, at least on an official level, was because sandbagging a sherman could add about 5 tons to its weight, which would result in more losses to mechanical breakdown than would be saved by deflecting any potential shot

the only makeshift armor that was known to actually work was literally welding the front armor of a sherman on to another sherman
which was intended to stop 75mm rounds and not shaped charges

It's not going to be very accurate in targeting but it does throw a lot of shit in the air with a fairly predictable zone of fire.
I mean more like covering alongside a trench or the side of a fortification line, only aimed slightly up rather than along the ground.

the thing about all these jalopniks is that, if we were talking about some third-world / poorly funded insurgency, i'd be impressed. if ukraine had fallen in three days (lmao) and these vehicles were thrown together by a partisan rebel group, i'd say "top stuff, very inventive, making the most of what you've got, like a modern polish kubuś"

but we're talking about the military that, for years, we were convinced was among the world's strongest, that could put fighter jets over i-95 (how the hell did they get through?), that could steamroll europe in weeks. we lived in genuine fear of THIS? HOW has putin not KILLED himself?

The more time you spend in the shop, the more time you have until they send you to get droned in Ukraine.

That's why I love Somaliland threads, you've got literal African niggers doing better than Russia with scraps and a handful of military hardware. The comparison to ziggers is just icing on the cake.
