I actually really do not give a shit about SBR's or SBS's. I'll stick to 16+ inch barrel rifles and 18.5"+ shotguns. Suppressors being unregulated though is REAL fuckin nice, hopefully we get standardized threaded barrels on pretty much every gun now

That's because it is arbitrary. The only reason SBR and SBS are regulated is because the NFA was going to include pistols and they didn't want people making sawed-offs get skirt around it.

they wanted the legal length to be shorter, but the carbines were shorter than the proposed length & commonly used at the time, so they left it at 16 instead of 20 or whatever

the M4A1 is a 16 inch barrel including the flash hider so in all honesty, it's not like we're crippled with a 16 inch restriction sans the tax. if it's good enough for the army, it's good enough for me

The actual USGI M4 is actually just shy of 16 inches with the flash hider. When people pin and weld a 14.5in they usually use an extended flash hider to get them just over 16. It's only a fraction of an inch longer but it's there
