That's badass. I always wanted one of those San Mai full tang Cold Steels. Couldn't justify spending $300 on a knife when I was barely 18. I have the Master Hunter VG-1 San Mai I got on sale for under $100.

Teach me about Karambits /kg/.
Are they just a meme?
Do they have utility or are they just "fighting knives"? I guess they could be useful to gather mushrooms at least.
Can you recommend any?

Unironically buy a regular linoleum knife instead.
Those have actual utility, unlike memebits.
By virtue of being plain utility tools, they also look a lot less incriminating than a "tactical karmbit", should there be some sort of incident.

The bayonets are real. Second from left is for my Mauser. The Fairbairn, and KABAR are new, but made by their original manufacturers. Getting the Fairbairn was a real bitch because it had to come from Sheffield, England, and US customs kept stealing them. I have to admit, their customer service was really nice to work with. That one is the third one they sent. The other two never made it out of New York. The hatchet is an Estwing. The M48 is a meme, but was a gift. The Case V42 is not authentic. I'd like a real one, but the only Case made ones you can get are insanely expensive since they're antiques now and Case stopped production in 1993.

Eh they are okay, their origin is as a pure tool, not a weapon. Curved blades have their uses.
But as the other anons said they were unfortunately established here mainly out of edgy mall ninja video game reasons.
Due to their public perception (reinforced by the childish designs knifemakers give them) you'd be stupid to carry one, that is just asking for trouble on multiple levels.

pleasu pleasu recommend a good knife.
A swichblade, for self defense, (local laws: no longer than 3.3 inches ,the width in the middle of the blade has to be more than 14% of its total length, the blade cant be double sided.) the budget is up to about 250~ euro

i carried an old probably illegal soviet swichblade from my dad for years but the spring broke and i dont have the tools to fix it now so i might as well get something thats both good quality and wont get me into trouble

For fidgeting, edc and generally looking sleek maybe. But since he wants it for defense, I'd rather recommend something thats less sleek and sinple, has a proper, big flippertab for ease of use when time is of the essence, and a grippy handle shape that prevents your hand from slipping onto the blade. Theres numerous examples, even from the same manufacturer.

They don't even have a how to video on that. It's marketed as a stabby knife, and say that keeping the point sharp is the only real thing you can do. It would be really impractical as a hack or slash.

That's because I have the Museum Collection Glamdring + the OG blue scabbard instead, but if we're getting into swords that's a whole separate issue. 1 Albion (Alpha Omega I poached when Canada got covid fucked), 3 Arms and Armors swords + 1 spear, 1 Darksword I got dirt cheap, 1 Valiant Armoury, a few odds and ends of other pieces, and about 150+ antique sabres and dueling swords lmao.

Can you be a bit more specific on what kind of outdoors? Do you plan on doing field craft? Stripping wood or cutting rope, foraging and cutting plants/etc? Stuff near/in water? Preparing game at all? If you deal with humidity and moisture stainless would be better but a 1060/1075/1080 type carbon blade would be solid.
>https://www.buckknives.com/product/105-pathfinder-knife/?sku=0105BKS-B is the little brother of the venerated 119 special. 420 steel but you dont seem like a snob. Leather sheath. A classic look that is going to be less aggressive looking in the eyes of park authorities or any police.
Honestly though, even with a pretty low budget you have so many options my only advice is to search through all the sellers. Check for sales, even check the blade forums for deals since you arent concerned with a NIB S2112v Microtech. Buck, Kershaw, Cold Steel (overbuilt but with a good, DAMN good warranty), Ka-Bar, CRKT, etc.
>https://www.bladehq.com/cat--Camping-Knives--3259#/filter:blade_length:4:5/filter:price:50:100 check the maker on here and god help me for saying this, but Reddit, just to make sure it isnt a drop ship Chinese POS, but pretty much anything in this category is G2G. If you are not in North America you'll maybe have other options as well.

It's like a hand sickle. Regardless of the size it's going to cut well due to the inwards curve meaning that it easily "snags" and draws more material into itself. If you want one for "fighting" or self-defense you should probably get some kind of hawkbill or linoleum like that other guy said but it heavily depends on carry/defense laws where you live. If the curve isn't so exaggerated they still stab pretty well. It's quite a lot easier to KILL someone using most other knives where you can just pull the sewing machine routine especially if you have no fighting or martial arts experience. However, you have some more options for less-lethal options with karambit-style blades and they're a bit harder to disarm if used properly. As for actual models I've only used the FX-599 and the Cold Steel Tiger Claw. Both use wave-style openings and deploy well. Make sure you get a metal/rubber practice version and actually do some drills and practice draws. Don't be silly and think that you only have to use them in a reverse grip, either.

Been wanting one for a while and finally got one of these in good condition, a Boker Superliner (not my photo). Several versions were produced in the late 90s and early 00s, but the late 90s model number 2063 with the 2000 in the titanium handles is the best of the bunch imo.
Just a really cool piece. representative of the style of customs from the time, (i believe this is a Michael Walker design actually), and also very fitting with the Y2K esthetic of the period.
Lockup and action are good (teflon washers are overhated if you ask me), ergonomics are ok but clearly take a backseat to style.

I am putting my own scales on it. My plan is to make some wood scales just to get the right shape and fit I want, then if I want to remove any metal from the tang I'll do that and re-fit the wood scales. Once the grip is exactly how I want it, I'll put on some canvas micarta scales and shape those.

I love this thing so much, punches well above its price. Smoothest, most reliable action ive ever owned. I just wish they'd make them in more blade shapes. Spear is really the only good option so that's what I got. Tanto and Reverse Tanto are such memes, and Dagger is the best for fighting but terrible for actually using it as a knife. I consider a knife a tool first and foremost and only a weapon as a last resort...

Id kill for a Bowie or a drop point version. Love a nice slicey belly. This belly is okay but it isn't the greatest, and the tip is essentially sewing needle thin which is magnificent for utility cuts or stabbing flesh but im scared to hard use it... I know magnacut is supposed to be pretty tough and all but it is ridiculously thin at the tip.

Reverse tanto is nice, basically gives you a wharncliffe profile. I got an exclusive orange handle blackened spear point. Sadly it suffers from Kershaw slippery aluminum. My Hogue Counterstrike has that nice chalky texture. I always wanted to get a drop point stonewash/satin orange handled Ultratech. Sadly they focused on Star Wars editions instead of plain models, and now they cost enough to shove them up their asses.

If you ever get a Halo V or VI or can tard wrangle Tony into making a 7 series I really really want a single action. Out of curiosity, if you made a SA OTF and put some rubber on the inside shoulders could you put a retard strong spring on it so firing it is powerful enough to penetrate on spring power alone? But yeah if you have a Halo V or VI I would trade for that + cash on my end outright.

>get a knife from the gun grabbers
I care less about the police asking them to destroy guns and more that Benchmade was producing a knife for Doug Ritter who used the profits from said knife to combat draconian knife laws throughout the US, told Ritter they were going to stop making said knife whose profits helped Benchmade sell more knives simply so they could make a similar knife instead and reap the extra profit.
>oh, you can't
Get back to me when you get to handle an Anthem. The coil spring Axis lock is so smooth that you can hold the knife perfectly horizontal, disengage the lock and the blade will close itself just from the inertia of the gravity swinging the blade closed and you letting go of the crossbar at the right time.

I went to Overland Expo PNW yesterday since it's local to my house and CRKT did a limited run of their Overland model (naturally) for the event, so I grabbed one. It has Mt. Bachelor on it, which is pretty cool. Otherwise just a pretty basic Chinese-made 8CR knife (booth guy said D2 and there WAS a D2 special done for one of the dealers but I think he was wrong about this one) but it wasn't too expensive and I thought it was a cooler souvenir than a T-shirt or something.

True enough, it's a shame they only have one variant in that shape though, and im not the biggest fan of it. There's lie 20 different Tantos though even though it's a genuine meme shape...

the only good thing about a Tanto is that it pretty much turns into a drop point after enough sharpenings

Fixed blade discussions usually involve what the knife has been used for or is intended to be used for. Fixed blades are tools and weapons.

Folder discussions are always about inane minutia about which lock a folder has and what new color just came out. Folders are pokemon and matchbox cars.

by the same logic an AR or AK thread should only be full of images of holes in targets and occasionally tactics discussion, but check and youll instead see loads of talk of individual parts, builds, attachments etcetera. mechanical function, history and design, that's whats interesting, and infact what I want MORE, more in-depth, of.
and while all of these apply to fixed blades in some degree (historical aspects and design certainly, mechanical aspects less so) there's more of that to talk about in folders.
if you want to talk what you last used your fixed blade for perhaps check out /ck/ and /out/ because I guarantee you weren't stabbing anybody just now. Or post in this here thread of what you use for hunting and why.

Honestly id assume a bugout scenario as mentioned by >>63919807 wouldn't be the best use, in such a setting tools and services arent available so I'd prefer knives that are less specialized and easy to sharpen on the bottom of a mug, both figuratively and literally, when they get dull.

How dumb are you going to get with it, retard? If you're going to be doing batonny chop-chop and using a fire starter and hacking trees and brush with it with it then your needs are going to be different from someone with a modicum of intelligence who wants to use their nice knife for knife things and use a hatchet for the bigger stuff.

After spending 3 hours in 95 burgerunit degree sun chopping these bullshit little bush/sapling things that are too thick to weed whack and not somewhere I can use a lawnmower I've decided I want a 40-48 inch long, (including handle), machete so I can chop things at ground level without needing to lean over. (I have a brush axe already but it's somewhere between "dogshit" and "totally useless").
Any recommendations? The only place that sells something like that is Cold Steel, which I've always heard is mall ninja prime but if all I need is a sharp long bit of steel would their shit be suitable? I don't plan to use it for battling ninjas or anything, but I also want it to not immediately fall apart since I'm sure I'll end up accidentally chopping some rock or dirt etc with it when I'm cutting shrubs at ground level.

Is China or Taiwan a better knifemaker?
If I had to ask /kg/ to list the best
>5 all purpose survival knives (fixed blade)
>3 fighting knives (fixed)
>3 urban carry/utility knives (folding)
>knife steel overall but especially in terms of toughness and durability
What would it be? Budget is in the range of 100-300 but could go up to 400 for the fixed blade knives. I like Magnacut, Niolox, Elmax and Sleipner steels personally.

>"self defense"
If you want "self defense," buy a gun. Nobody is using their Kershaw anus-tickler to fend off Dayquan. If you absolutely need to have "combat" knife, get an old Puma SGB with a jigged bone handle or maybe like one of those classic Scandi knives like Helle or Fรคllkniven. There's probably better options, but I like those. Seriously, no more polymer and powder-coat, we should get back to basics. Wood, bone, horn, just anything but polymer, please!

Hoboanon back to call you all sissy faggots. Let me recap a typical knife general

>vague criteria $150 what should I get
>pristine unscuffed blades
>Leo and zogbots showing off their pocket jewelry folders

None you pussys make knives let alone use them, ten years ago /k/ was filled with actual working men using their blades instead of you queers. None of you weak children can refute my point and will instead ignore or post your unused expensive toys to own the poors like every other thread on this dead board

Hey, so I want to get a decent classic style switchblade for my collection without going into the triple digits. As long as it's around that price point, not from China, and classic looking, (in descending order of importance) I'm willing to consider. Anybody got a suggestion that can fit?

Additionally, a question: what's the point of a nail nick for something that'll open automatically through a spring? I'm seeing them a bunch on older models on ebay.

Maintenance is the key issue. Optimally, the least maintenance, the better. As such, yes, stainless or semi stainless allows you to use a knife with less focus on keeping it clean. It's like corrosive primers. No one is going to say you can never shoot corrosive ammo in your gun because it won't work. But given the choice or rather all things being equal, would you WANT to use something that is more maintenance intensive for no perceived gain?

Why does /k/ in general get super mad if you spend 2-300 bucks on a knife? Niggers will argue until theyโ€™re blue in the face about buying a gun that costs twice as much for marginal improvements but if you dare want the same thing in a knife itโ€™s the worst thing on earth

Because steelnis steel and if it cuts it cuts. Knives are toys that don't replace a gun, fork, axe, or saw. Just get a knife from the gass station (or knife center) and be done. It's not even like a pistol you use to fight your way to your rifle.

I won't speak for the people who sperg out over it, but most knives in that price range are at best gucci gear, and at worst some art deco bullshit that looks kinda gay. It's kinda hard to justify those sort of prices with blade steel, heat treat, and QC alone, especially these days. Even chinese knives are getting kinda good, it's a little concerning honestly
Granted, all of this is coming from someone who's only spent over $100 before shipping on a knife once, and that was on a kabar, so higher end shit has just never interested me enough to warrant dropping half a check on one. To each their own though, you can judge me for collecting gay military knives like an autist, and I can judge you for spending $300 on something to open packages and blister packs with

Do yourself a favor and upgrade to atleast a slightly better knife than gas station quality. You don't need to spend a shitload of money on it, hell, you could probably get a decent one for under $50. Then, if you learn how to sharpen and don't break it or let it rust, you'll have a knife for life that you can give to your kid or grandkid. I have several knives from my great-grandfathers, cause those dudes had taste

To me, anyone that doesn't care about what steel their knife is made of probably doesn't use their knife much because if they did they'd find out that some blades dull quickly. I have a Benchmade Ambush made of AUS-8 that can't handle cardboard cutting for more than a few minutes and that's the knife that made me care about edge retention.
