So there is a slim possibility that there may be a Tomcat or two still hidden away somewhere in Iran. How would /k/ rescue her and bring her home?

If anything, them being destroyed allows the potential restoration to flight status of the very few ones in AMARG/in museums. That titanium wing spar ain't exactly the most complex part to reproduce.

Thatโ€™s what Iโ€™m hoping for.
That once itโ€™s confirmed that Iran is Tomcatless and/or regime change, that the museums โ€œcoincidentallyโ€ happen to stumble on a cache of spares to bring existing ones to life.

And then Northrop โ€œaccidentallyโ€ uncovers files and tooling to restart production and upgrade them to F-14E or whatever.

Shut up! It could totally happen! It WILL totally happen!

The AIM-174 is basically what the Phoenix wishes it was. Also, carrier air wings could use an actual strike aircraft since they got rid of the A-6. And no, Super Whorenets arenโ€™t good enough.

The only two confirmed destroyed had not moved from their spot on the tarmac in more than a year, there isn't any reports of others being splashed, and the hardened hangers that got hit supposedly held F-4s, not Tomcats. Probably a couple got wasted but very unlikely all or even most of them.

>>63887297
There is exactly 1 at AMARG that is in a possible return to flight status.

>>63887307
Yeah the Tomcat demonstration team fucking mogged the shit out of the Blue Angels at all the airshows I went to growing up. It was kind of amusing. They would wait till one of the proceeding acts was kind of wrapping up and then do this 200' AGL flyby from behind the stands at like 600 knots and full reheat. It was extremely based and loud.

>>63887329
It would be a lot more reasonable to just hope the FA-XX doesn't get canceled so we can give the Air Farce even more gibs and it turns out to be the correct choice, ie a Mach 3.5+ heavy interceptor with the RCS of the titanic but moving so fucking fast you kinematically cannot shoot it down. Son of Tomcat has the potential to be extremely badass and end this gay and retarded LO era.

The Navy and Grumman lobbied for it super hard. The Tomcat cost more than a quarter of a billion dollars per copy in today's money and was bankrupting NAVAIR to the point that they were going to have to shut the line down and greatly reduce the total buy. Iran's purchase lowered the overall cost and allowed the Tomcat to continue production and service for several decades. If you go to Oceana or Miramar there are zappers from Tomcat squadrons literally thanking the Shah lol.

It would be like if we had allowed Britain or Japan or somebody to buy the F-22 so we could keep making them. Same kind of situation, where the USG was nervous because the F-14 was so advanced but the USN argued if the Iranians didn't get them, we wouldn't have them much longer anyway. Which was a big fucking problem in the Reforger era.

Europe was more focused on lightweight fighters since they were very close to the line of contact and didn't really have the operational depth theoretically to use the F-14 in the way it was intended. It was really designed from the ground up to be a Tu-22 / Tu-95 killer before they got to missile release and that just wasn't a huge priority for them.

Japan also didn't really face a big threat from long range aviation and to the extent they did, they had F-14s based at Atsugi anyway so it was kind of a moot point.

Iraq had a pretty strong strategic bombers force so Iran opted for the F-14 as weirdly they had were facing the same kind of threat profile as CSGs. Iran at that time was also concerned about possible Soviet intervention and so faced Russian long range aviation as well, but not so much Russian tactical aviation. So just kind of a weird set of circumstances that coincidentally led to the F-14 being good for them and not really that useful given the cost for anyone else besides the USN.

There were no confirmed Tomcat kills during the war, the entire Iranian airforce fled to eastern mountain bunkers when the war kicked off. The planes Israel "destroyed" were desiccated airframes that had been sitting outside for years.

The only way you're getting those Tomcats back is as a gift for nuking Tel Aviv.

>>63887297
Tomcat was an expensive hanger queen when it was still in service and imagine how difficult it would be to restore one to flying condition after we shredded our stockpile to appease God's Chosen. Everyone who worked on it is either dead or senile.

The only way you're restoring a Tomcat is to unironically ask the Iranians how they keep em flying and buy parts from them.

The real reason was AWG-9 radar. Due to Iran's mountainous geography ground radar wasn't going to work very well for them. So they opted for an airborne radar system with a powerful radar and the fact that the F-14 could not only do that but also defend itself and carry out offensive missions sealed the deal.
