ITT you take a plane that is at least 50 years old and imagine an upgrade package for it to make it relevant as possible.

My beloved twin mustang will receive turboprop engines and an AESA radar in a giant pod between the fuselages. Below each fuselage, a single AMRAAM. The loyal citizens of my despotic regime may die by the hundreds piloting these contraptions but they will still be semi dangerous.

put radar in nose that can angle in any direction frontally, link the turret guns to it to shoot down shasneed drones.

Here we have a rather rare picture of what appears to be a Po-2 air ambulance with a hard skin and shell over the transport compartment, i suspect it is some form of Bakelite ¶As part of the Po-2M project the cargo area would be modular to allow for multi mission field configuration ¶In this case the primary modernization would be a widened passenger section to accommodate access by the medic via a catwalk equipped with modern life support and strip lighting for a pair of patients ¶The body of the module would be fiberglass while the rest of the airframe would be modern shrink wrapped skin preferably Oratex ¶The Po-2M itself would receive other modernizations which are beyond the scope of this particular post

Modern 'fabrics' approach early aluminum skins for strength in low speed applications, it's weight could be dramatically reduced and range increased if you could find one that would serve: https://betteraircraftfabric.com/

Serious question, other than Muh Stealth, what actually keeps cold war era jets from just being upgraded with modern avionics and loaded as low-cost missile trucks or converted into drone fighters? They have kinematic performance that is still very much relevant. In fact a lot of 4th gens are comparatively underpowered and wouldn't be able to catch them.

Anyway I would like an unmanned cruise missile in the form of an English electric lightning loaded to the gills with bombs, fuel tanks, and an automatic guidance system.

I was talking about the twin Mustang, Oratex or carbon fiber could possibly replace the skin.

And hell yes a Po-2 needs a better skin, bakelite is an improvement in how flammable their skins are. 'Flying comet' was a nickname and not in a good way.

Besides modernizing materials and some modest avionics upgrades the big change for the Po-2M would be making everything rear of the pilot modular so it could be reconfigured for various roles, they had several dozen variants including 5 person enclosed passenger versions.

>>63891540
Absolutely nothing, as i've pointed out a Il-28/H-5 could function perfectly well a a carrier for something like a Kinzal.

>drone fighters

One of the reasons the DPRK has so many early cold war fighters functioning is they can make the engines, the same engines were used for early cruise missiles and drones. They use freaking VK1s in their global hawk knock off. What you suggest, turning old frames into drones is entirely possible and has been done.
