This is now a Crimson Skies thread.

Being serious for a moment, there are so many issues with Zeppelins it's not even fun: an effective lifting gas is either dangerous (ammonia, hydrogen, etc) or obscenely expensive, not to mention no material can effectively stop the lightest gasses from escaping. In theory airship would be amazing for ASW, but due to size and the required lightness they're vulnerable to bad weather, not to mention they're a fuckhuge target waiting to get shot down.

there's hydrogen cars and refueling stations in cali, but the tech's a little bit in it's infancy. the cars seem to work, relatively cheap fuel wise, clean, but refueling infrastructure is basically west coast only afaik. until there's a military contract behind one i don't expect we'll see much of it anywhere. But as usual with the US as soon as commies began to die, and even more with Carter, a lot of Latino american (dictatorial) governments were sanctioned and forced to cooperate with other shitholes like the the Soviet Union, China and the Middle East that were the only regions actually buying our exports.

>Which is a great thing since we might actually get back big engines but now they produce "zero" pollution.
hydrogen is actually more like a chemical battery, since its used to produce electricity to generate power rather than burned
its energy density is greater than normal batteries because it can use atmospheric oxygen as its oxidizer rather than carrying its own
the main downside is that its a one-way process, so any hydrogen that is produced has to be produced with clean energy itself

>>63892741
the thing is that if your powerplant can be nuclear, solar, wind, or hydro
a combustion engine can only ever be petrol

but even if your power comes from coal, the dirtiest energy supply, you still come out a net benefit compared to burning oil, it takes longer to payback the pollution incurred when producing the battery, but you still get there eventually
the simple answer is simply economy of scale, 1000 small engines all burning fuel is less efficient than 1 big engine (a power plant) that then transfers that power to batteries
electric motors themselves compound on that efficiency because they themselves are more efficient at converting power to work than combustion

This isn't entirely a bad thing and it's been proposed that places with bountiful solar power such as Australia could use hydrogen for baseload power. Some states such as South Australia have such a high number of domestic solar installations that they for most of the year the state produces more power than it needs during daylight hours, switching over at night to natural gas generation and electricity imports from other states. It's been suggested that the excess daytime power could be used for powering an industrial-scale electrolysis plant that would build up a huge reserve of hydrogen (enough to power the entire state 24/7 for 3 months) that can then be used as fuel for a hydrogen power plant that would maintain baseload supply at night and during winter.

No fagggot
External combustion engines only care about receiving sufficient heat for their working fluid, they don't care how the heat is obtained

And internal combustion engine can work on ethanol or methanol and other biofuels. Common ethanol contains 30% gasoline, but that's just for practicality, it would work with pure ethanol about the same.

"western culture" and "western coutries" are usually just countries that display a prominent amount of culture as derived from the Greeks/Romans, usually in the forms of ideals and political structures relating to the roman republic. Nuclear, wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal, etc. sure some of those are unreliable, but that's why you don't use only one type of power. I'm sorry to break it to you Brazilbro but western carries with the implication of being white. Its sort of a fuzzy concept, and I would definitely say latin america is an outgrowth of the west and very culturally close to it, but its also a bit of a grey area because of the mixing with native americans and african slaves.

The idea of what constitutes Europe is also a bit like that, its a layered concept of geography, genetics and religion. Turkey has a bit of land in Europe but no one really considers Turkey European because brown and muslim, but Muslim Bosnians are firmly part of Europe because they're Slavs, christian Armenians often consider themselves to be part of greater Europe but a lot of western europeans wouldn't.

To expand on this a bit, the cultural traits you mentioned are pretty surface level, most of the west had other political structures for very long periods of time, and before Christianity practiced various forms of indo-european paganism, and some western nations like the nordic countries have comparatively little influence from greco-roman culture.

A country inhabited by germans with an absolute monarch that had a germanic pagan religion would still be more western than an african country perfectly larping as the roman republic and speaking french.

im not brazillian but "white" has no real definition and is kind of a moot point. People would say that Italy is obviosuly a western country but im sure you ask the average /pol/ mongrel and they'll tell you wops aren't white.
>and before Christianity practiced various forms of indo-european paganism, and some western nations like the nordic countries have comparatively little influence from greco-roman culture.
I would argue against that on the basis of christianity and social democracies being very prevalent in the nordic countries. I think christianity plays a very large role in being westernized and people would simply not count those countries as being western at that point.

White can be defined genetically, european ethnicities form a distinct cluster that can be seperated from middle eastern ethnic groups.

But my argument about being western doesn't just hinge on genetics, its genetics plus a deep cultural continuity with europe.

>>63896881
Well yes, when anglo americans lose culutral hegemony completely and are just one minority ethnic group among many the US will probably have changed in character to be less western, but that will take decades to play out.

>>63896842
Thats actually kind of an interesting question. The charcater of a country is strongly shaped by the ruling class, anglo south africans are quintessentially western but the afrikaner culture developed in south africa from a mix of european groups while cut off from the original colonial power. So its a bit like other new world cultures in the americas that developed to be their own thing in situ. Afrikaners are mostly (~95%) white and mostly protestant christians, but I'm on the fence about whether to consider them western.

>not western
Saying shit like this is one of those litmus tests that define if you're a smoothbrain with a worldview based solely on vibes.
By definition Brazil is more western than some Euro countries like Hungary
It follows Roman Law, material and cultural heritage is Iberian/Med, has a liberal transparent economy, is capable of holding democratic elections on all levels of federal government and has Western-aligned if pragmatic foreign policy instead of some gunpowder empire coping mechanism like Russia, India and Turkey.

>using Hungary as a benchmark
idiot
>It follows Roman Law
it doesn't follow any law, not even its own
>material and cultural heritage is Iberian/Med
in surface matters like food but not in values e.g. work ethic and honesty
>has a liberal
lol
>transparent
lmao even
>economy
average GDP per capita HALF that of the lowest European (Greece)
>is capable of holding democratic elections
but doesn't have an impartial judiciary or uphold freedom of speech of similar standard in practice, which are necessary to ensure those elections are fair
>has Western-aligned
lol no
>if pragmatic
cope word used by quislings and chamberlainist appeasers

in addition to the above, the facts are that Brazil chose to join the Chinese alliance instead of the Western alliance

you're a smoothbrain with a worldview based solely on vibes

Airships are too slow and a bitch in high winds. They do have a niche, but it isn't cargo.

I remember even before the war they were already in deep shit and couldn't deliver the few orders they had.

The A400M is a midsize cargo with some rough field capability. It's one weight class above the J. Its range at max payload is the same as the Super Herc at regular.

The age of gunships with autocannons and howitzers is coming to an end. The AC-130 is already horrendously expensive and viable only in a fight against sand people with just some rusty AKs and Dushkas, without manpads and with total air supremacy. The Air Force is already experimenting heavily with employing more stand-off weapons from their AC-130s
