Business insider did an hour long documentary on some Army war exercise in Hawaii and there was a OEF/OIF vet SFC like that. At the end of the documentary he talked about trying to get knocked down to E-4 so he was in a better position to be closer to the action if a war with China happened. I feel like a lot guys who went through the surge are like that but they are a dying breed.

How can you get through this whole movie and not pick up on this being pure irony, and that Joker is in now way a supporter of the war and in fact he's making fun of the entire thing and the military establishment the whole time. It shows him growing increasingly jaded and worn down by the reality and horror of the situation, punctuated by his mercy killing of the female vietcong sniper which is the death of his carefully protected idealism and detachment.
