Here's a super rare Japanese weapon, the type IV flare gun made by the Imperial Navy during WWII. It was a last-ditch weapon, being useful as a flare gun and also designed to fire ordinary buckshot shells as a defensive weapon. Technically Asian, and I hate to say anything nice about jeets, but the Indian JVPC is a really neat gun. It’s like an mp7 with a 12” barrel chambered in something almost identical to a 5.56 MARS. The chambering is called 5.56 MINSAS and IIRC it’s a 5.56 with a shorter case and ~1.7” COAL. I’ve heard the reliability of the gun is not so good, but it is damn cool and I wish we had more developement in this field of mag-in-grip guns. It is easily the coolest firearm genus.

Do you know about the Surefire/Armwest MGX? If Sullivan is Browning, and the mag-fed constant recoil LMG/assault rifle is the pistol, then this is Sullivan’s 1911 or Hi-power. It's not a critical dimension/mating surface so for production it makes sense to leave a gap there so that variations in the tolerance range don't cause an interference fit. The two receiver pins are the critical dimensions/mating location.

It'd be interesting to see how it worked out in it's weird caliber versus standard 9mm.

There's no problem with Colt ARs, as rifles or SBR/PDWs at least. The problem here is that the Colt IAR is trying to be a squad automatic rifle but it's completely unmodified AR action with no changes to make it more suited for sustained automatic fire other than the heat sink and big fat handguard. In that regard it's technically better for this role than the M27 IAR it competed against that actually got adopted by the USMC, but my opinion is that the concept as a whole is half baked (again, not entirely Colt's fault) and it hardly constitutes a replacement for the Ultimax which was purpose built as an MG and has an open bolt, QC barrel, and a constant recoil action and probably some other stuff I'm blanking out on that make it better for that purpose.

Maybe something like the Russian SR-2M Veresk? Gas-operated, in a proprietary 9x25mm cartridge - a bit heavier than Tokarev, and with comparable or slightly slower muzzle velocity (depending on the specific Tokarev loading).
The Russians, unlike FN & HK, didn't go for the small-caliber PDW cartridge and just decided to make overpressure 9mm with penetrator cores (they also have such loadings for regular 9x19mm)

But overall, this is indeed an underexplored area - submachine guns in calibers spicier than the typical pistol calibers. SMGs on the whole are held back by pistols - people don't want to be introduce a whole new caliber into their arsenal, so SMGs are developed for the same caliber pistols are, but the larger form factor of SMGs allows you to use other operating system (like gas operation, or various forms of delayed blowback) and handle way more power than a pistol could.
There were some attempts at making 10mm Auto SMGs, like the MP5/10, but those didn't go anywhere. There's also the M2 Carbine, I guess (although some argue for .30 Carbine being considered a proto-intermediate cartridge), but that's not very controllable - one could probably design a modern .30 Carbine SMG that's a lot nicer to shoot.

But with .300BLK SBRs being popular these days, I guess this is an area of development that just doesn't attract much interest.

You have to be ignorant, lying, or both to assert South India and its various ethnicities aren't also genetically distinct from the rest of the Asian continent. There is a lot of ar18 influence in most piston guns after it, hardly even just western ones.

The Daewoo K2 uses an AR15 style rotating bolt and an AKM/FNC style long-stroke piston.
You could argue that it's more AR18 since it's the same kind of bolt head, but again, long-stroke, and also the South Koreans were very much inspired by the M16 (which they had made and used under license before the K2), the fire controls are VERY similar to the AR15.

I'm really glad that they're starting up production again, the K2 is a very cool rifle.
