Good news! Import restrictions on barrels have changed, no more will the barrels on parts kits be variously mangled! Will this drive ak kit prices to unheard of highs? Has my maddi kit become effectively worthless? What reformed foreign machine gun barrels do you hope to acquire /k/?

I don't expect this to affect prices by very much. Russia isn't importing anything anymore and the good quality thirdie surplus from everywhere else all but dried up a long time ago. Let me know when they start to get more lenient about stuff like "Articles of the former Soviet Union" and we can get that one anon to finally follow through on importing a million bakelite mags from Georgia.

Unless I'm mistaken I believe this to be in reference to the ATF policy of "once a machine gun barrel, always a machine gun barrel." They required the destruction of them along with the receiver to allow importation. But that other anon has a point, there probably aren't the caches of surplus guns available like there used to be. On the other hand this opens up any guns countries want to phase out, and there are always more arms squirreled away, if not always in the best conditions and greatest quantities. This does make it more economically viable, a barreled kit is worth more, which means importers can bid more against other countries or agencies that might be looking for surplus arms.

If you built guns from foreign parts kits you may have noticed the barrels came cut up for the last 20 years, before that you could get every part except the receivers. Then again, that probably happened before you were born. They were pretty cheap at the time too, $99 for a Romanian ak kit, $20 for a sumoi. That is unlikely to happen again as there has been a tremendous increase in interest for relatively modern foreign guns since then, with very few ways to get them. The benefit now is build guns will be more clone correct (barring 922r compliance,) we'll probably see more and different guns imported as parts kits, and no more barrels will be senselessly destroyed.

Heard this was going though a little while ago. Good thing I waited for an M16 parts kit. Fuck me that I didn't wait on several others. Wonder when the first parts kits with intact barrels will appear and what effect it has on pricing, if any.

Anecdotal, but I feel like the common and uncommon AK kits' prices have held steady (maybe dropping a little) since their high water mark during the coof. Once redd*tors found out building an AK isn't as simple as assembling AR uppers to lowers, then finding out AK builder fees start at $400, they became far less interested.
If so then good, fuck 'em.

It's nice for AKs and the like but it's too little, too late for a lot of guns like FALs. A whole shitload of nice, useable barrels that will never be made again were trashed over the last 20 years.

True but what this could mean is the importation of warehouses of rifles earmarked for other places that can now be used for the more lucrative American market. Other countries don't have the same onerous import reqs we do.

Telling the BATFE to cut the barrels on imported kits was one of the more retarded shitbird ideas that spilled out of Shrubs' pea sized brain.
Every kit I had the displeasure of de-milling, the majority of which had brand new unfired barrels, made me sick.
This ruling is 20 years too late. But better late than never... I guess.

From what I've read it was a Clinton era ban that importers managed to push off until Senior's presidency. I don't think I'd be able to do that job, better to get something rather than have the whole gun lost, but still.

>Every kit I had the displeasure of de-milling, the majority of which had brand new unfired barrels, made me sick.
What's the deal with the different demil methods? Some cut the barrel in half (>>63897861), some torch cut into the bottom of the barrels (recent PPS43 and UZI?), and yet others just cut the chamber end out or the middle section (APEX Galils). I don't get how leaving everything but the chamber passed but I'm not complaining, though what I can do with a 10" section of probably shot out Galil barrel, I don't know. Other guns, fuck you we torched the belly of the barrel. With parts kits it seems like every importer demills to a different spec they feel they need to hit. Rambling here but I guess some don't want to have the fun run-in with ATF going "nuh-uh you did it wrong, fix it or scrap 'em."

I think it was a mix of demillers working on their own recognizance and evolving demill requirements. Enough people made guide rod pistols out of barrel stubs and they started requiring chamber cross cuts like when people were having too much luck rewelding single cut receivers so they updated cutting requirements. That's just a guess based on 25 years of buying parts kits though, I'm interested to hear what someone who actually did the cutting has to say.

The kits are cut up before they enter the US.
The ATF has changed their requirements for demilitarizing kits over the years. In the end, the firearm becomes chunks of metal that pass the sniff test for import.

Spoonfeeding, I know, but is that with kit purchase only or can they be bought separate? Looking at some kits I bought previously here and it'd help. $75 for a "good" barrel, though, phew. When a new one is only about double plus any finishing costs away, not to mention having spent several hundred on a kit, $$$ to build it, money spent for a new receiver, it certainly doesn't sound like much more for the new barrel if you want accuracy (shooting) over minor lack of accuracy (markings/parts sources/parts matching).

That's a shame but understandable especially right now. I'm curious to see how the prices of kit barrels go maybe a few months or a year or two into this. If it gets low enough or it just becomes included, I wouldn't be opposed to taking a gamble on barrel quality (or paying to hand select a kit with a good barrel). It does put thousands of kits in the US in an awkward situation, though, which double sucks for things like UZIs where not only did the last of them end up recently (?) scrapped rather than cut into kits but also one of the main guys for UZI parts (including receivers) died a couple years back, not to mention the weird shortage of sears (to the point most grip/magwell assemblies come without sears, even many complete ones). This wouldn't be a problem but no one seems to have stepped up and had a gunsmith make a huge batch, which sucks because you need original sears to modify for semi-auto.

I'm waiting for one to pop up at auction (w/o online bidding) but my hopes are low. I just want it for the wall, but the prices are insane for what is essentially wall decour for a fucking gun room, made by the millions, especially considering I'm sure a lot of these are old tubes used for training that would otherwise be considered trash, being single use. Not to mention from what I can gather, gun sales are in the shitter ATM according to local stores which makes the pricing situation even more confusing.

I'm delighted the culture has moved in this direction, I was always looked at askance whenever I bought goofy surp but the market keeps proving me right. The only problem is it's a little harder to collect with all the competition.

Keep an eye out, you might also want to watch local estate sales online, that's where I've gotten some of my best stuff.
Numrich also has Czech launchers for $250, might be of interest.

Since then I've seen it mentioned a couple times, hopefully importers/exporters will get the memo, barrels might still be getting destroyed at this very moment.
