The infamous "trench rambo" video from 2023 is apparently defending against a unit of russian GRU spetsnaz, comparable to an FBI combat squad or something. Not meant for wartime use at all, much less frontal assaults on trenches, but pretty much everyone with any amount of training has been thrown into meatwaves at this point.

"Trench rambo" is a random 19 year old TDF conscript who died like 2 months later, and is serving with a guy who is frozen with fear and incapable of shooting back. Yet the "spetsnaz" get wiped out. That should tell you enough about their combat effectiveness.

Seem to be pretty much wiped out. Most got consolidated into 1 battalion after heavy casualties at the start of the war, the "Sparta" battalion if I remember right. They were around for a bit but haven't heard of them in over a year. Russia basically just genocided the native Donbabwean population he had invaded to "save".

The National Guard have been in Ukraine since the first day. However the actual equivalent of the NKVD/SS are of course the FSB. They're in Ukraine too and were heavily involved in all the hits and purges of Ukrainians who were involved i nationalist political activities or were former Ukraine military veterans in places like Bucha and such. The National Guard are just Gendarmerie, just military police for internal and national security.

People, particularly in American scholar contexts, misinterpret the FSB/KGB/NKVD/SS very often because they aren't familiar with the structure of European political parties and their equivalents in other places, especially revolutionary parties like with Nazi Germany and the USSR.

The SS/NKVD/KGB were meant to be the armed militant wing of their respective ruling political revolutionary parties. This is why so much of what they did was political in nature. Their job was to enforce the politics of the party. The NKVD/KGB wasn't in charge of both the gulags, the USSR borders and spreading communism around the globe just because it was convenient.

This is also why the SS were declared simple criminals in a criminal organization after WWII. They weren't military, they weren't soldiers, they were armed political militants of a political party.

The biggest contemporary equivalent is the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Chinese shit.

I believe he's talking about OMON - they are civilian riot police and were indeed present in the column headed to Kyiv. One can assume that Russia expected the city would fall quickly and policing action would be necessary to deal with civilian unrest

i remember when they started their assault in ukraine seeing dude wearing all black uniforms, i think they were OMON or MVD units.
there was also a lot GRU that took part in the conflict even earlier when it was just DNR/LNR, they were mostly doing recon or sniping.
i had no words about Alfa being present or OMON (riot control) doing anything either.

The survivors gave a press conference in Kyiv during the first few weeks of the war. I assume they've been stacking pallets ever since. Or got exchanged but they might not want to go back after what they said..

He took shrapnel into his left shoulder and into his...rump. He did an interview shooting his full auto black burger gun (he was amazed that it was full auto) but this was 2 summers ago. Haven't followed up on him.
