I just wish they would've planned better. These guys didn't have to die, it wasn't worth it for this mission. And it just added to the "SEALs are incapable of acting intelligently" stereotype.

But hey, we got a cool meme crossfit workout out of it. Wouldn't it be better to still have those guys here?

Murphy was also responsible for a friendly fire incident during a training build up in Hawaii that nearly got him decommissioned, that has since been scrubbed from the internet.
He also had to repeat BUD/s twice according to Dick Couch's book on Warrior Elite or the forge, can't remember which.
Either way, he was a turd flushed to the SDV units in Hawaii because he was not seen as competent to be in the continental teams.
Used to be an article on Navy Times, it is completely non-existent now.

Instead, they have taken someone who should have never been in a leadership position and turned him into a hero that retards celebrate every year by doing a bunch of push ups.

This might be a silly question, but were the uniforms at matter of personal preference? Seems kinda odd that two are decked out in all DCUs and the other two are wearing a mix.

Also I've noticed that from pics around 2005-2006, you started seeing conventional troops wearing BDUs in Afghanistan just before they were phased out, but they still wear DCU-patterned helmets and and body armor, which kinda defeats the purpose (pic related).

Wasent Luittrell basically used by the navy and Admiral Joseph Maguire(who also had a subordinate commit suicide after some gay hazing shit in the 70s). Hell the book wasent even written by Lutrel and they even got the name of the Op wrong on the cover(redwing and not redwings).
And also didnt Murphy's team failed their final training exercise before being shipped out ?

Special operations probably has a lot of personal choice but back in 2003-2006 there wasn't a huge commercial market for gear like there is now. The market was either surplus stuff or mall ninja gear.

The picture of conventional soldiers you posted were probably issued DCU gear for deployment and brought both their desert and woodland BDUs which they could swap out whenever the environment called for it. 173rd Airborne first deployed to RC-South so it makes sense they would have desert colored gear but like the photo you posted parts of that region had a lot of green vegetation so it makes sense they came prepared with at least woodland base uniform also. Mixing and matching woodland and desert still can be useful at breaking up the human silhouette and providing camouflage. What's funny is they deployed to Iraq with the infamous tan uniform and green body armor but that's the military for you, you wear the gear you get.

Units operating in RC-S deployed with both desert and woodland stuff. Some even patrolled with both and changed as they came and went between the dasht and green zone. Multicam wasn't an answer to having different uniforms for different theatres, it was an answer to shit like that.

Just off the shelf multicam privately bought or bought off the shelf by his company through deployment funds.
In the mid 00s commercial multicam stuff was the height off cool shit to buy for deployment.
Multicam stuff would be officially issued in Afghanistan 2010ish. OCP stuff wouldn't be available to the common soldier until years later.

SEALs were part of the military with freedom to kind of wear whatever.
With conventional units, a lot of the mix'n'match came from whatever you've got. If your unit issued you tan tactical gear, you're wearing tan gear. Uniforms dictated officially on the company level for what pattern. Reality is you'll just start wearing what you have. If you have two sets of woodland and two sets of desert uniforms and you're on some buttfuck border post without big FOB amenities, eventually you'll start wearing whatever isn't totally fucking gross. I have seen guys wearing civilian tshirts either under their tops or just straight up under their armor with no camo tops. I've seen guys wearing whatever color civilian hoodies on guard duty, or camo colored hoodies or civilian hunting gear on patrols. No pics to prove it because when guys started doing this stuff they'd not take photos of it, and if somebody important were doing some dumb tour of the place they'd put it all away. I myself wore a Czech combat top for a while because it was comfy.

one of my go to rules of thumb (as a civvie with no military experience whatsoever and therefore no idea what he's talking about) for deciding whether I think an SF group is competent is how much I hear about them directly, obviously there are other considerations but generally if the group has a tendency to keep a low public profile and shut the fuck up then I'm immediately assuming some degree of professionalism. this is also why i think seals are full of shit whilst the SAS remain the best

I can't prove it, but I know in my bones that the mysterious radio problems were that the team didn't update the crypto on the radios they brought with them and when it rolled over to the next week that's why they weren't able to talk to anyone, until presumably whoever they were talking to on the other end realized it and plugged the old crypto codes into a TOC radio.

Based on the recording he was still near enough to his mates 10 minutes after the engagement began for one of them to be shouting at him. Contrary to most posts it's not really a "Marcus where the fuck are you going?!" type yell, more just the kind of call outs you'd expect. Most likely scenario is that he was in the fight until shit really started to go south and then he bolted to save his own ass. Not trying to absolve him of any later tall tales, but the "he heard gunshots and fled immediately without firing a shot" is just as fanciful a narrative as the movie when we have footage that implies otherwise.

It was a massive clusterfuck by the navy, and in the fine tradition of massive military clusterfucks, everyone involved with it collectively decided to save their careers by making up a fake story about how the dead guys ended up dead and and giving them all medals.

had an officer in the S3 shop in my battalion that was a platoon leader for the battalion that the SEALs took that mission from. In our workup for afghanistan each company and platoon once a week would do what we called a "why they deserved to die" class where we would break down failures and medals(if you had to do something to earn a high valor award then you failed somewhere in planning/execution) in the GWOT. The officer in S3 gave the "why they deserved to die" class to the whole battalion on this mission and we were all so blown away because at the time the book was popular and the movie was about to be made.

it turns out when you are fighting guys trained by the CIA, even if it was 30 years prior, and are on their home turf with crew served weapons and RPG's you can easily beat 4 guys with rifles who gave their position away 12 hours prior. Whodathunkit?

the "grunt retards" plan that you called it was to walk in from 11 miles away from their FOB, with a recon platoon reinforced by infantry company for support, set up an inner and outer cordone, and just drop ass on the guy if he showed up. Unlike the super duper SEALs who did 2 fake helo insertions, and left their fast-rope rope at the LZ and made tracks all the way to their position, while only bringing an embitter radio and a satalite phone, no crew served weapons, and only one of them having had any sort of combat experience albeit in a different combat zone altogether.

>To be fair, the average person doesn't know anything about that
Nah, most people already equate seals as THE spec ops. Hollyjew shit like american sniper, tears of the sun, zero dark thirty, 13 hours, the rock, under siege, etc feature a navy seal or former navy seal as the main protagonist and cement navy seals as the archetypal spec op group. Don't forget about those ex-navy seals book that boomers use to vicariously live through them while posting some lame shit defending Israel on Facebook.
Meanwhile the only time people ever heard of delta force was from black hawk down 30 years ago

I can't believe that 20 years later we are still talking about how a bunch of retarded NSW officers got 19 people killed in a single day in a relatively low intensity conflict. None of this happens without the ego of the JSOC commander not allowing 3rd Marines to utilize 160th airlift without SEAL Team 10 involved.

These retards went into a contested area with hand drawn maps and no commo, not even a SAW with 4 guys. Their QRF was playing frisbee without anyone on radio watch. The QRF commander ordered the pilots to outrun their gunship cover and did not prep the LZ with fires, probably because he felt a need to make up for the massive delay they caused.

The local militia who killed them weren't likely affiliated with central Taliban leadership at all.

they were, that was the whole point. Its common sense, but people have to be told, if you had to do something to get a medal, things went horribly wrong. As infantrymen, if you do your job right, no one will ever hear about it or care.

It makes a lot of sense that when the boats arrive somewhere new you're going to have to build fortifications, roads, bridges, etc when you get there. The Navy has a higher ASVAP score to enter and imo is better suited "culturally" to producing good engineers than the Marine Corps who make an excellent fighting unit but not so smart mmmkay

It's not so surprising that after going into full damage control mode the military managed to psyop the American public into believing an abject failure and embarrassment of an op was actually a heroic moment. I promise you the average Americans understanding of redwings is that which was portrayed in the film. In fact I'm willing to believe the avg American thinks the scene with the radio operator dying heroically happened exactly the way it did in the movie, that the entire firefight happened exactly the way it was portrayed in the movie. Hell, most people don't even know that the whole "decision" to let the guys who discovered them go is a total fabrication.

Americans desperately crave that sweet sweet feeling of WW2 where everyone's a hero and there's an object "good guy". They're so thirsty for it they'll slurp up any slop that's dumped Infront of them.
