What are the best guns for long range precision shooting?
In current year, at various price points.

I need Atleast one additional constraint, otherwise there is no solution. Proof: find the best long range rifle and cartridge, and scale it up. You now have something even better. Repeat ad infinitum.

What you want to maximize, cartridge wise, are 3 things:
1) sectional energy
2) provisions for a VLD bullet
3) shot-to-shot consistency.

These are really the 3 factors that determine a cartridge’s external ballistics. BC, velocity (combining to form “time of flight”) and accurate knowledge of the bullet’s BC and velocity right as it exits the muzzle. This last one becomes hugely important as the range increases.

I honestly don’t know what you’d look for in a rifle, specifically, other than the very general “mechanical accuracy.”

>and scale it up. You now have something even better
That isn't necessarily better at all. A gun that's too heavy to carry effectively is useless. And making things bigger also harms accuracy. For example, WWII era Naval guns had impressive accuracy, but Schwerer Gustav's accuracy was abysmal.
You correctly identified consistency being extremely important, yet failed to realize that the bigger one makes things the more difficult this becomes.

>>63908526
>guns become too heavy

Correct, that’s why I said that OP needs to impose an additional constraint. Otherwise a >100lb rifle firing some 20mm wildcat is an excellent long range gun. But purely ballistically speaking, yes, scaling up always improves external ballistics because everything stays the same except sectional density goes up.

What do you have against a Remington 700?

Its a weird question considering I've never seen anyone here post a group at even 100 that would suggested they could wring out even what a Rem 700 with factory ammo in 308 has to offer.
Long range? 300m? 1000? Doesn't really matter. You are going to get a bunch of answers. Barrett, AI...
I recommend Cheytac. About 10,000. .357 or 408CT. Both are great.

why does no one in these threads ever talk about custom actions even though basically everyone at the top level of precision shooting sports is using one? the fags in /arg/ will drop $6000 on a clone build just because deltacom ranger force uses it, but /prs/ doesn't even acknowledge that these things exist, let alone that basically every range record is being set with them.
Anonymous No.63915396 [Report] >>63915634

Because people who ask "wut gun r best" don't want to be told to buy a Kelbly action, Criterion barrel, Macmillan stock, Brownell's bottom metal, and then take it all to a gunsmith to have it assembled. They want to swipe once and then take it to a range to get outshot by a kid with a 10/22.

Its harder, longer, and more expensive to gain the value of full custom builds. They aren't recommended because there are less of them, less people who shoot them, and they're much more expensive.
Anonymous No.63915634 [Report]
>>63915367
>>63915396
Because this is a question that beginners ask, not seasoned pros. Even if you have the funds for a custom build I would not recommend one as your first rifle. You have no idea what you want or like, so having a gun that’s tailored to your needs is meaningless. Get something generic, then determine what you do and don’t like.
Anonymous No.63915681 [Report] >>63916316 >>63917322

yeah but op said "the best" not "the best I can get from cabelas." a custom build isn't even that much more expensive looking at the big picture.
Anonymous No.63916165 [Report]

Now you're being deliberately pedantic, anon. If someone asks "what's the best car for the track days at my local course," he is not expecting, and most anons would not offer, advice that he build a car from the ground up based on the particular conditions at his local track. This is, from an objective standpoint, the best answer. But that's not what he's actually asking for, and normal people recognize that.

Is it sloppy English? Yes. But we do that shit all the time to speed communication and society has yet to descend into irrecoverable anarchy.
Anonymous No.63916588 [Report] >>63916823
>>63916316
the op even said "at various price points" and at the >$2k level you're basically stupid to not be considering custom builds.even if you want to compare it to cars the people driving volkswagen golfs have probably put a bunch of aftermarket parts in them.

I'm probably a bit out of date but Im confident these will work. Also a suppressor is almost mandatory. Not writing in range finders, slings, kestrel, spares, drag bags, random small attachments, or paper back ups expect 400$ for range finder + paper up to 2500$ for higher end things.

Destitute poor 1300$ (stick to 6.5 creed)
>savage 110 tactical or bergara ridge
>swfa fixed 12x
>seekins rings are THE BEST and lowest price point aluminum rings to consider.
>magpul bipod

Budget 2500$ area stick to 6.5 creed
>Ruger's RPR, savage 110 tactical with KRG Bravo chassis or Bell and Carlson aluminum bedding block stock or factory chasis savage
>swfa fixed 12x or their 3-15x, primary arms/Arken/Athelon series higher grade optics
>seekins rings
>magpul bipod, Harris bipod

Mid 4300$ area stick to 6.5 creed or 300wm
>bergara b14 hmr with krg x-ray chasis (this combo despite pricier has value due to weight), savage and ruger chassis rifles still viable but heavy, consider DD ar10.
>leupold Mk4 series, low end nightforce ffp, higher grade vortex razors,
>arca rails + something like slik tripod 15lb+ class
>seekins rings or find steel rings.
>atlas, magpul, or Harris bipod

Good 7000-13000$ 6.5 creed, 300wm, 338lm
>military rifles like Sako, Mcmillan, AI, consider good AR10s ie: Seekins, LMT, and even DD (light and good barrels just can't handle high volume shooting).
>mk5 leupolds, tactical nightforce
>hopefully find steel rings
>Some of the heavy more robust tripods seen in PRS (many brands) + atlas bipod

Wild cards are if you have time, tools, money.
>building off custom actions
Can get you excellent weight to performance ratios down to 2300$ amd the sky is the limit
>handloading
Can get greater accuracy with superior range. 300prc range surpassing military 338lm etc.
>>63915367
It's a lot to explain to someone new but better to someone who can handle a little bit of detail. With prefit barrels now it's not even hard.
Anonymous No.63917322 [Report]

They're not too bad now. Examples of ones that accept prefits even
>Weatherby 307 action $500 from pacific gauge and tool or aero solus is something like 650$ from northland
>Bell and Carlson stock $350
>your preferred highest quality barrel ~1000$ (some offer good down to ~600$)
>your preferred bottom metal ~150-250$

The highest end custom things will likely outperform most military equipment for the weight especially if handloading. BAT actions are only $2k for example and they make some of the most suitable XL magnum platforms.

>arc coup de grace action $1199.99
>bartlein barrel $465
>triggertech diamond $279.99
>krg xray chassis $557.99
>leupold mkv $2199.99
>mdt scope rings $129.95
>gunsmithing $400

this comes to $5232.91 and would be way better than your mid tier and even your good tier

That's just rifle setup m8. Also was trying to do factory ready.
>bergara hmr 300wm 1400$
>seekins rings 130$
>mk4 1500$
>krg x-ray 600$
>magpul bipod 130$
>slik tripod setup ~$500
4260$ for instantly sourceable parts that'll likely get you ~1 moa magnum rifle that isn't too heavy, can wear a suppressor, and can fire in multiple positions.
I'm in a gun state but funny enough it's challenging to find gun smiths that can do barrels so with custom actions I'm looking at 650$-$1100 prefit barrels.

1 moa is child's play the build I posted will shoot 1/4" at 100 yards. $4k for 1 moa is a fucking rip since you can get sub moa with a $600 remington 700 and $20 worth of devcon.
