Why no clubs, spears, warhammers or swords? I understand longbows, as you can make more arrows as needed, but they seriously need more than a swiss knife. Small village can certainly make steel weapons too.

The rage virus per the lore is super contagious. In the first movie a main character got infected by a single drop of blood landing in his eye.

Idk if you've ever seen crime scene photos but blades and clubs create a shitload of splatter and spray.

Also movie has lots of English symbolism and long bow is about as English as it gets.

If you are caught in CQC with zombies, I'd expect you to have at least some visor to protect your face, full clothing, and ideally something as thick as a fashion magazine wrapped around the arms under the clothes to use in case of you have to push a zombie away with your hands.
Blunt weapons can cause splatter but not generally towards the wielder. If you are so turbofucked as to need them, this is a nice compromise. A warhammer with a flat end would be pretty effective.

>First 1/4 is fantasticly filmed, high paced, absolute thriller that made me so anxious that I was at times genuinely uncomfortable
>Next 2/4 is a random road-trip/coming of age story
>Last 1/4 was some weird esoteric shit that only works cuz Ralph Fiennes carries so insanely hard but then you get a gut punch with the Saville kung-fu club.

The whole "just wear full body protection all the time" keyboard advice really shows that some people just don't fucking go outside. Hiking around in all that shit is going to exhaust you and lower you ability to watch your surroundings.
>Oh so just put that stuff on when encountering infected!
The rage infected sprint at you. You ain't putting all that shit on. And if you did, it's not like it would help, they attack in mobs. If you've ever wrestled IRL (and that's just 1v1, not 1vMob) you'll understand how useless any of that gear will be in hand to hand because it is just going to get ripped right the fuck off.
The smart move is to do exactly what the father son pair did and run, while occasionally leapfrogging to fire back at the infected.

Historical slings that are rotated are wildly inaccurate and only work in large scale battles where you have high volume of fire trying to hit a wall of people, modern slings are also wildly inaccurate if you're not using actual balls they're meant to shoot.

Great movie btw. At the end of the movie, they used melee weapons, but it was a little wacky. In terms of spears and stuff, im assuming its because the zombies are running and theres dozens of them at a time. I think spears would work in the context of the movie but only when the defenders are numerous and their spears are extra long. They would still be using bows though.
What I dont get about the movie though, is that why didnt they make guns. Im sure they explained it in the previous movies, but I havent watched them. If you had 28 years to scavenge for stuff, you'd probably be able to make basic guns. There are plenty of metals and stuff like old ping pong balls to make a few guns and a few cartridges. Not enough to make a difference, but a black powder shotgun would be more than doable with the island's tech.

Mate, every action movie with group fights does that. Once you see it you csn't unsee it. The worst are 1 vs many fights where if, instead of looking at the main character and whichever mook he's fighting like you're meant to, you look at the mooks the MC isn't fighting and you literally see them standing around or shuffling goofily. Look for it. I'm not kidding. It's fucking terrible and it's everywhere.

He views them as just doing their thing, not something that needs to be killed in sight. That's why he has a nickname for that alpha and knows how long it's been in the area- he's been around it for a long time.

Second third is eh?
Last third is just retarded nonsense

When the Swedes appear is when the film really takes a dramatic dip in quality and there are is so much unresolved shit that it was clear they were planning for it all to be dealt with in a sequel, a sequel getting made by a diversity hire. It honestly felt like this was 4-5 different films chopped apart then mashed together into one. There is also some downright retarded shit like how the city of Newcastle is apparently now on the West coast of England.

That's harsh, yeah the different parts of the movie are quite different from one another on some aspects, but they all have their own qualities
Even tho I prefered the first part, the coming of age stuff, the relation with the doctor and the death of the mother were still pretty touching and emotional imo. The short time the protagonists spend with the Swede soldier was pretty funny (until the poor guy gets his head ripped off)
The ending with the gang of saville's lookalikes is weird but not catastrophically bad

Making this more /k/, man the red dots on those rifle bugged the shit out of me. It always triggers my tism in movies when they put microdots straight onto the rail of ARs like that.
A lot of the other gear issues I can chalk up to the fact the soldiers were basically just conscripts/inexperienced guys who weren't super hardcore soldiers and who probably grabbed whatever they could before making landfall. Stuff like the vests having shotgun shells but nobody with a shotgun and the droplegs hanging on their knees can all be waved away as the guys just raiding the gear room as fast as possible and grabbing whatever. But those red dots are something that would have been set up already. I scratch my head at movie armorers letting this happen. Like, did the movie armorer not have either risers or full sized optics to put on there?
That said, I kind of liked how the Swede soldier was a total goober. When he and the mom & kid were walking through the woods and the soldier was making small talk at the top of his lungs it really cemented that he was just a total retard.

Its schizo as fuck. Interesting and weird. Doesn't all work, but I'll take that over some cookie cutter product of a movie.
I really dug the random inserts of old movie footage and wish the movie had done more of that.

There is a difference between being holed up in a stationary location, and having to hike all over the place.
How far do you think that guy would get before heatstroking or taking that shit off?
Also heavy gear like that only works if there is one direction where he's being attacked from. If he is just out and about he'll get tackled.

Right, but we are talking about the third movie. And how people in that should have dressed like the guy in the first movie.
So, let us imagine the people in the third movie are dressed like this guy according to these suggestions.
How does this help against an alpha? How does this help when being attacked at the same time from multiple directions?

>And how people in that should have dressed like the guy in the first movie

presumably, over the course of 28 years, this type of equipment or gear is either gone, destroyed or on an infected person

I cant imagine the UK (being the total size of the state of alabama) has infinite quantities of riot gear on hand, especially with no 'self-defense' culture like the US..shit like that would have been ONLY found at police/military locations which would have been first looted and lost

and in the 2nd movie, london is literally fire-bombed to ash, so the preponderance of it was lost there
but yah, if you could find the last riot suit in town, its probably one of the better outfits you can wear to tank infecteds in a confined space

"it doesnt"

its not like any other 'regular infected' couldnt get into a wrestling match with you and rip it off anyway
the entire take away of that scene was to show he was an armored hulk with a shield, in a confined space exactly the size of his armor, making him an 'impassable wall'

I know, I'm just engaging with the idea while ignoring the logistics. Pretty much every piece of zombie fiction has people online constantly suggesting stacking a ton of armor and gear as the best solution, while ignoring that if you're traveling on foot it's impractical. In 28 movies it's even worse because if you're out in the open the armor won't help against a mob anyway.
Dude in the first movie was in a static position and defending from one direction. Very situational but people are too low IQ to understand different situations exist

Since into full spoilers mode the Swedes were the biggest plot hole of the movie. They were supposed to be a bunch of sailors shipwrecked that drifted ashore but they had time to fully load up with tactical gear and function like soldiers? Yeah I don't buy it. They look like a commando team but fight and act absolutely incompetent as fuck that they made Liberian Cannibals seem competent with a gun. Just didn't work the way they were implemented into the film. There was a great story potentially there about some young sailors being washed up in a hostile foreign land full of monsters with very limited supplies and equipment and having to learn from locals how to survive but the writers just didn't fucking see it. Hell that could have been the whole premise of the movie and it would have stuck the landing a lot better. Imagine them trying to figure out are they dealing with some mutated infected or just your average Briton?

People are so concerned with blood splatter they forget that wearing armor means preparing to go hand to hand with essentially a bunch of murderous methheads that are running at you in a pack. I dunno man I don't think that out in the open I could hand to hand fight 20 insane people who don't feel pain and win. The move is to run away and kill them from a distance when possible. Any piece of gear that slows me down is a problem.

They said their ship hit a rock. It is possible it was slowly but inevitably sinking and stuck on the rock. Certainly such things have happened where a ship sinks over the course of an hour or so.
I figured they were the equivalent of a VBSS or whatever, but they were not the elite. I've seen this IRL in peacekeeping bases where there is a perimeter guard who look scary at a glance, but they've never actually seen any action and don't expect to, and when an emergency happens they have no idea what to do.

I'm going to see this tonight with my heckin wiferino. The idea of the military incursion is interesting, because there are valid reasons for jaunting into Zombie Island, such as for the recovery of nuclear weapons. I'm fully prepared to have a good time at the movies regardless but I am betting that I (a former sailor) could give the bong writers some notes. I will say that I'm glad the sailors are Other NATO (apparently Sweden joined NATO in this alternate universe as well). Even though I was in the US military I am kinda tired of seeing it on screen.

OK just watched it and tbf they explained that it was pushed in by the current. And in the US cut they definitely showed the RHIB. I think that it would have worked a lot better to have maybe 1-2 guns between the sailors and a few of them be badly injured. There aren't a lot of guns on a warship and they are basically all locked up. But really having outsiders didn't help the plot at all. I loved the first 1/3 of the film but it fell down in the middle and the Jimmy Saville ending was bewildering.

They hit the beach like a raiding party and charged into like 20 tweakers, which should have been easy to dispatch with the eight machine guns at their disposal. They should have been covered in oil and had like two pistols and one long gun, their RHIB torn to shit, etc. I could believe them getting overrun if they looked like actual shipwrecked sailors.

Yeah that was annoying too. But desu the actual biggest issue is that the plot did not require them at all. They served no purpose in the story. The one survivor guy did rescue the kid and mom but he did it in a way that would have definitely killed them IRL.

I actually would like to see a movie about a military expedition into the quarantined zone though. Maybe they can make a 28 Months Later flick about NATO trying to recover British nuclear warheads or something like that. That's the only reason I can think of to send people into the maelstrom that would actually be worth it.

I think nearly everyone with a zombie & gun fetish has played Left 4 Dead 1 or 2 at least once. Probably been 21 foot ruled countless times in those games.

Why couldn't the outside world supply drop stuff to them as well. In 28 weeks the infected had burnt itself out enough to start rebuilding and it only appeared that a single woman was asymptomatic and kick started the infection again via retardation. If they can remove the infection from Europe and declare it safe, how is the UK still full of infected.
And how the fuck do infected give birth to non infected children and raise them

It spread so quickly that organising the military to be effective enough to stop it would be next to impossible. 28 weeks show how quickly things go to shit and they knew what they were dealing with.

Implied reared by 'alphas' who are shown more developed and intelligent. It also appeared the zombies were washing themselves when they were splashing in the river, unless I missed something obvious.
I think they are going with the zombies becoming evolved or advancing.
The overall introduction of the dark haired hairy alphas is lending itself to the prehistory Britain currents in the movie, it also meshes with the folk nationalism the movie seems to appeal to

Well that was the old canon. The new canon has the videogame classes of zombies and they're able to survive naked in Britain all year round, without food stores. They're able to outfight squads of soldiers with machine guns.

I dreamt up a better plot in which the soldier has scenes where he's the last survivor of the fight. He's taking stock of the situation, emptying all the weapon optics of their batteries, packing as much ammo into his vest as he can, etc. He'd have a sat phone and be in contact with some unseen command ship. They'd have difficult conversations where they explain that they aren't coming for him, but they still give him info on where to go and not go. Maybe they task him to look into stuff for them, and provide drone overwatch or supply drops.

When he sees the zombie baby being born, he's like "this is my ticket out of here", and tries to get command to exfil him and the baby to study it.

>millenial
Both the screenwriter and director are 50+. It's three coming of age stories in a planned trilogy written by someone raised by a single parent and directed by a "spiritual atheist" with all the baggage both of those backgrounds entail. It forgets and barely mentions the other movies. All things considered there is no reason it needed to be a "28 [X] later" movie beyond name recognition and modern producer's seemingly being allergic to new IP's.

OK I looked into it and apparently yes, the British air dropped nukes were gone in 2002 HOWEVER the USAF had over 100 B61 gravity nukes at Lakenheath in 2002. Lakenheath is very close to Cambridge, which is ground zero for the outbreak. The infected would be at Lakenheath in under eight hours and I could totally buy a missing nuke plot based on that.

Fuck that would be an interesting plot though problem is 28 weeks later, don't see the US not leaving any of those behind before trying to recolonise the UK. In a 28 years later scenario it would have to be some nuke they lost that is on the UK or some mercs going trying to go for one huge payday.

Thanks. I did some rough calcs. Assuming the infection spreads at 5 km/hr (average walking speed) you'd be looking at Lakenheath breached in eight hours and I think it would be literally impossible to get the nukes out in that context. North London would be swarmed in 12 hours, North Scotland in a week. Hack screenwriters aside Britain getting overrun doesn't feel far fetched.

As far as 28 Weeks Later goes, regardless of the (kinda dumb) recolonization plot it is highly probable that several warheads would be straight up lost. We still haven't found all of the ones we lost during the cold war; weapons grade U is barely above background radiation so if something falls off a plane you may not find it for years.

the scenes with firearms were done in a kinda hurried manner, but what the movie attempted to depict was a light picket force consisting inexperienced kids who weren't supposed to be there breaking and panicking, I think that in itself would've had content for entire movie in itself

nato cant even contain and suppress a mild zegroid outbreak in real life. containing britain beyond two under gunned and manned cruisers "patrolling" the entire perimeter of UK and ireland is already stretching it.

if anything pirates and scavengers entering the islands to loot for valuables should be a big theme in these x years later depictions

You wouldn't be fighting the infected in melee without protection unless something has gone very wrong. So if you do have protection, blood splatter isn't an issue. Anything will do if you're efficient with it. Unless you're fighting an Alpha, in which case your head will be pulled off regardless.

Imo a spike with a satellite dish at the end to prevent splatter. I guess if you make it into a fork and add a handle guard you could use it to make them trip and fall to the ground. If you're outnumbered good luck.
