if they don't immediately scramble for the door, probably. its dark and you can whip out a gun and fire pretty quickly, any hesitation on my part is basically courtesy and a desire to NOT have to be interrogated by cops.

I have a two-story house. I sleep upstairs. I would record audio with my phone and clearly state that I am armed and tell them to GTFO. If not compliant I would fire a warning shot, it still not compliant or the intruder starts to climb the stairs I'd shoot him.

I almost shot an intruder who forced his way into my house. He was drunk and lost, and thankfully he understood what the business end of an AR-15 looked like and broke the fuck out or otherwise I would have had to tell the cops I shot an intruder.

Even on the battlefield we wouldn't shoot someone unless there was a compelling reason.
Had some pretty funny negotiations with criminals and terrorists, very few are anti social, mostly just drug effected, bitter, unreasonable, selfish, wouldn't make the ten deadly sins list, and where they're dangerous it's usually in the context of their own stupid behaviour.
The way I'd put it, many would kill you by accident, almost none would kill you on purpose. Sometimes you have to do their thinking for them.

If we just went around blasting them, they'd just go around blasting us. In my county it's not uncommon that armed criminals will still surrender, if they're carrying a gun it's generally for their own self defence, not really to commit crimes, and if they're caught they will just run away, try to sort things out before they get arrested.

Anyway, as a result of being white, reasonable, and not blasting at one another we have a very, very low rate of violent crime, a very low homicide rate, very low incarceration rate. Steal a TV and someone will yell at you, do that a few times and get caught, go to prison for a year, get out, claim unemployment benefits, smoke weed, no longer a criminal. Just a bum.

Last couple times I’ve heard discussions on home invasions, a “reasonable” take is that…you should just let the home invader take your TV or cash, clearly they’re desperate and need the money and why risk a violent confrontation, you know?

Having any sort of thought that a potential home invader is anything other than a rational, logical human being who just fell on hard times is racist wrongthink not to be engaged in.

Would I shoot a home invader? Yes. I hope it never happens though, because immediately afterwards (assuming I have a dead body in the house now) I’ll be deciding whether or not to call 911. I love in a purple area and self defense shootings that 20 years ago wouldn’t have been taken to court, will probably get taken to court even if it’s a weak case against the homeowner. Prison or potential life-ruining legal bills are real possibilities where I live and many other places in the US unfortunately, where there is no castle doctrine or stand-your-ground type of legislation in place.

I'm not willing to forfeit my life on whether or not I can correctly discern that they are indeed unarmed. I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6. I don't want to hurt anyone, but intruding into my home is a threat against my family that forces my hand.
