SBRs have a valid point that its silly to restrict them in a world where semi auto pistols are legal in all 50 states. the whole argument in 1934 for SBRs was that they were too powerful and concealable. Back then pistols were mainly .38 special revolvers , today you can conceal carry a 10mm glock with a 17 round magazine. Things have changed a lot, so there is a good argument for SBRs/SBS.

Machine guns are by definition weapons of war, I just do not see a way in which you could ever get these taken off the NFA.

The 1934 NFA levied a $200 or $5 tax on the transfer/ownership of certain firearms/accessories which was originally meant to be impossible to pay (basically de facto ban as a "tax" without actually "banning" the guns in question in order to pay lip service to the 2nd amendment).
Suppressors were only regulated because they wanted to reduce poaching, which was a slight problem during the great depression because people were trying to not starve. The only reason we have any regulations on rifles/shotguns with barrels under a certain length is because the NFA originally meant to ban pistols too, and they threw in SBR/SBS language to block an obvious workaround. The pistol ban got dropped, but the workaround was left in place as an oversight.
Besides the tax itself, attempting to buy one of these regulated items involves additional background checks, paperwork and permanent registration with the ATF. You also have to report in advance if you plan on crossing state lines with one. It's a hassle. Dropping the tax to $0 is something, but the real headache is not being able to buy and use an NFA item like a normal gun.

It's looking like we aren't going to get that, which is a huge disappointment.

This is a fair point. The actual tax prices on the NFA items haven't been adjusted since 1934, mostly out of benign neglect. Congress has the power to do it at any time they want, to any extent they want. One of the risks taken by HPA/SHORT was making the NFA a political issue again which risks Dems getting ideas like updating all the prices to adjust for inflation (almost $4800 today, or $120 for AOWs) or adding new items under that umbrella. The NFA has been tweaked in the past (rifle barrels being allowed down to 16" from 18" so that surplus M1 carbines could be sold for instance), but there's real risk of it being aggressively weaponized in the future.

What we really need is a partial or complete repeal and/or a strong supreme court ruling but even with everything stacked in favor the odds aren't great.
