Milsurp has gone up even more since then, especially following a huge spike in 2020. A person who owns a gun can butcher it if they want, but there are only so many original German Mauser 98s in circulation and always more people who would like to have one, so not being a good custodian of history is going to be frowned upon.

Yes.
It has just now occurred to me that you can take the blue paint off with light sandpaper, and then refinish the wood underneath and make it look brand new or better. The original oil coat that the wood was soaked in from the factory is probably not at the top of a collectors list. As long as you used the same kind of oil no one will know it was ever painted blue.
