It would have been more palatable if they hadn't gone through such theatrics to merely give Wick a basic competition AR and glock. If you gonna have a guy like that, use him to sell the audience on a really unique set of weapons.

From what Wick asked for, basically anything could have been suggested. What was the criteria again? Something about a big party. Bold, precise, etc. Wick really wasn't steering the selection process there. The guy could have offered an explosive FPV drone and it would have fit the criteria.

John Wick was basically created by stuntmen and stunt coordinators trying to push back against the cheap trend of filming bad guys appearing from wherever and a countershot of the protagonist firing a few rounds, then showing the bad guys falling.
They committed to the nonsense of having the bad lines line up to wait for their turn to get merc'd, but if anything John Wick did something different. It may have overstayed its welcome with FOUR fucking entries and a spin off, but at least it wasn't Hollywood slop.

The sequels threw away everything that made the first movie good and that's part of it. The first movie used more confined environments for the big action scenes so there was a good reason for baddies to be so close, and even then John gets shot in the club by a guy he didn't see. Then every subsequent movie has wide open sets that make it obvious that goons are running 30 yards up to John for their turn to die. It's like they gave up on trying to do anything but string together a few over the top actions sequences, and 3 and 4 don't even have any memorable guns.

The worst part being that that's not realistic at all, but nobody points that out. Because it would be stupid. It's a movie after all right? If you watch Commando and point out how unrealistic it is for Schwazenigger to just stand still shooting from the hip while queues of enemies jump backwards is "nothing like real life" everybody will think you're a cretin.
But whenever a movie decides to put effort into making crazy stunts and precisely coreographed fights, then it's acceptable for people to start crying about how none of that is realistic or practical.

Yeah it's weird, none of the movies really feel as visceral as the first. It's a lot of different things as well. The first's fights feel grungier, real, like a street brawl, the second's feel choreographed, but without the knowing nod of something like Equilibrium.

Surprised noone mentioned the bulletproof suits yet
First one didn't have them, Wick wore a bulletproof vest under his shirt and still got knocked down when he got shot.
Second movie he gets a magical suit that deflects bullets, but he's seemingly still hurt be the impact.
Third movie onwards the suit just makes him invulnerable. He literally just holds the cloth over his face and it acts as a force field.

I think a big part of it is because John wasn't a superhero yet and it actually felt like he was in danger. The throw-away hit squad in his house wasn't even an easy fight, and the music cutting away to just the sounds of two men fighting to the death made it feel more real. There was also the strong starting point that the events were taking place in a fictional criminal underground of NYC and not a fantasy global network of assassins that makes up 1/4 of the planet's population.

No, Morpheus giving him the Viper 2011 in the 4th movie was worse, he gives this huge sales pitch about the pistol and then Wick goes "wow how did you get it, it's not even on stores yet!"

Obviously 1 is on top, since it's the best as an actual film telling a story. The plot goes completely off the rails as the series goes on until 4 basically says fuck it and makes it all action scenes with occasional character moments.

A lot of people seem to have one scene that they don't like. For some, it's the subway suppressers scene. For me it was when Morpheus told Wick that a 1911 holds 7 rounds and Wick was like, "7 rounds? As a master assassin who specialises in pistols, I am surprised to learn that a 1911 holds only 7 rounds".

The idea of wick was that he can kill you with anything, even a pencil. He does not need to know how many rounds a pistol hold to kill you with it.
There's plenty of scenes in the movie where he's out and just adapts.
Add to that that he wasn't born in WW2 and used modern, effective pistols, not some ancient garbage.
A professional who gets an effective tool for the job and doesn't autistically sperg out about it.
So the exact polar opposite of /k/.

You're right that it's a rehash of 3 but it's the superior version of it.
3 was just action no plot, but the action was tired. It was mostly just the same things we'd already seen on the first 2.
4 went crazy and threw a bunch of random stuff like the japanese chapter of the assassin underworld, the blind chinkman, pyro rounds with hotline miami camera work, plus they pushed Wick to (further) points of absurdity with the roundabout and stair fight. Not all of it was great, but at least it wasn't just John Wick 2 without the plot
Also since we're talking plot, 4 still had more plot than 3 since the 3rd movie is just Wick trying to rectify his excommunication just to throw it out the window right after he gets it, setting him back to the same spot he was at the end of 2. I'm willing to bet you could watch 1 2 and 4 and not notice there was a movie missing in there.
Also those are some weird dubs you got

I haven't seen the movie in a while but I assume Wick's surprise wasn't that the 1911 only held 7 rounds, but that Morpheus was ONLY allowing him 7 rounds
But to add to what you're said about everybody having a scene they don't like, mine is right after that. Morpheus gave Wick 7 bullets so I thought "Wow now we're gonna a different shootout from the other because Wick will have to come up with different tactics to make those 7 rounds last!"
No. He immediatly magdumps it and grabs one of the goons' gun.

I'm kind of using "slop" as in the original sense, not as a synonym for RedLetterMedia's "shlock" as in movie nonsense that can look cool if you turn off your brain.
Slop is something that's served to you and is indistinguishable from what was served before, it's a muddy mass that you eat because it fills you up but there's little to no care for the ingredients inside or the texture. Therefore if you make an action movie you can record just shots of actors firing off blank guns, and bad guys getting hit. Nobody gives a shit as long as muzzle flashes are going off and the squibs are sending off blood splatter. Now it's worse because blanks still carry some danger so everyone's starting to use CGI flashes and blood and the product is cheapened - not because "CGI bad" but now you don't even have to plan for using the squibs as the set and clothes get stained, you can just do everything in post.
John Wick is stylized violence, it's not realistic and there's stupid movie logic involved so you kind of have to sit back and turn your brain off. But Keanu had to drill the moves and the choreographers had to sequence the bad guys entering the scene. That's a labor of love that doesn't deserve to be called "slop". Even if the end result makes you say "yeah this is a movie lol nobody would line up in real life".

>OP is an idiot that believes assassins want strange and exotic weapons
John Wick takes place in a universe where assassins and the parallel society they move within are strange and exotic, and their choice of gimmick is as well.
The problem is that Butler "show me the Precious" Taran managed to leverage his training of Keanu Reeves into a movie-tie-in promotion for his competition products. In the John Wick world the Sommelier would pick exotic stuff to double-down on the movie logic of the world of assassination, but there's a real life advertising imposed over it.

actually, its entire schtick is being a sidearm for cops and crewers who don't want or need a big heavy rifle constantly, that is still able to hit accurately out to pdw/pcc ranges AND still defeat body armour. WHILE just being a large pistol.

It wasn't surprise, it was disgust.
Wick is kind of a glock guy and rolls with something like 22+1.
There was more than a little irritation at the kind of pettiness of helping him but giving him a shit gun.

Maybe it was TT again, the movie was practically a rant about how you can't survive without high-cap doublestack polymer pistols.
The movie could be seen as a propaganda campaign by big gun to reject classic favourites because they're obsolete and buy the new things because... 7 rounds isn't enough anymore and don't you want to be like Keanu?

I'm saying that the Wick franchise is marketing for guns manufacturers and gunsmiths who are releasing new designs.
The enemy of gun manufacturers is the resale market, they want everyone to only buy new guns, to want the new shiny gun from the latest movie or influencer vid and to keep on buying.
It's about selling guns like they're iphones.

I thought it was funny.
Humour often comes from subverting expectations, the build up was a set up for a joke.
Whether it was a well executed joke is a matter of artistic judgement but I gave an amused snort at it.

I know this is thinking too deep into it, but with how many no-name peons get killed, where is the new blood coming from? Hundreds of people are dead, from nobody assassins, to well known assassins, to High Table personnel, so who is filling these vacancies? There's no way this organization can keep replenishing assassins when hundreds die and entire security teams are killed every few months.

Members of the society recruit the assassins basically from ordinary criminal classes, the Continental series goes into it.

I think Wick events are rare, possibly unprecedented in magnitude though there are wars between member groups which probably leave a vacuum but like JW1, the victors absorb the remnants and grow new operations to replace the old.
