Did the game ever give an explanation why fungicide/antifungal meds don't work?

If I recall correctly, the disease came very suddenly from out of nowhere and fucked the world into oblivion before any countermeasures could be employed.
Anti-fungal meds might work, but the world collapsed and billions died before anyone had the chance to try them.
As for why the post-collapse society doesn't use such meds...
