>>63942909I legit cannot understand how someone can feel that they were scammed into joining the military. You have access to the internet where you can ask any number of active duty military guys if you should join and what the pros and cons are. The average enlisted guy isn't gonna try and convince you to join, if anything they'll (perhaps inadvertently) do the complete opposite.
When i went to the recruiter for the first time it was AFTER doing a ton of research on my own. I'm about 2 years in now and it's going just about as well as I figured it would, which means it has a lot of shitty aspects that I knew about prior to enlisting, but underestimated how bad it can be to deal with these issues 24/7 for 5 years. There's also plenty of good, like (in my case) living in a foreign country and unironically the comradery you always hear about is real.
Some of the things that suck:
>Shared rooms (even as an NCO if your base sucks)>Being treated like a liability since I'm lower enlisted despite being in my mid 20s>Not allowed instant access to a car due to being overseas>Was stuck in the training pipeline for about 14 months from the start of bootcamp to when i finally left MOS school>Shaving daily and haircuts weekly gets old>Truly shitty living accommodations that make me want to get married asap>Extremely reduced privacy at all times (this has actually made me much more extroverted)>Chowhalls are often badTyping these out made me realize I coulda just joined the AF instead of the the Marine Corps and avoided most of these issues, but I didn't wanna end up in a situation like

You probably aren't gonna get very much, you'll get your standard first aid courses and if you deploy you'll do CATM and youe gas mask course again, but don't expect that to happen very much. Ypu aren't gonna get any tactical stuff in most likely unless you work really damn hard as well as get super lucky and deploy with JSOC or something but I never did nor knew anyone else who did, so... yeah.

I'm enlisting in the Marine Corps soon, probably infantry or something else probably combat related to earn the title and get experience. After that, Iโm planning to use tuition assistance and the GI Bill to go to college, commission through OCS, and try to become a fighter jet pilot.
Yeah I know itโs a long shot and super competitive, but thatโs the goal. Worst case I still serve, get discipline, benefits, and a degree. Best case I end up flying Hornets or the F-35 Lightning II.
What about you guys? Anyone else going officer route or aiming for a specific MOS or pipeline?
Do I need a driverโs license to enlist?
Iโve heard mixed things. Some say itโs required, others say it only matters for certain MOSes. Is it going to hold me back if I donโt have one yet? Should I rush to get it before I ship or can I deal with it later?
>>63950290No but you should get it ASAP anyway. Driving = freedom as junior enlisted.
>>63950290>Do I need a driverโs license to enlist? Not that I know of, but
>Should I rush to get it before I ship Yes. The biggest horror story I've personally witnessed was this dude at Ramstein:
>Driving home (to the dorms) after work (night shift) >See fellow junior enlistoid walking, presumably to work >"ay yo you want a ride blah blah blah" >He hops in >Directs me to part of base I have never been to before >It's probably like a mile and a half from the dorms >"Damn bro, you walk this twice a day? You should buy a car." >Turns out he doesn't have a driver's license >Can't get his driver's license outside of his home state >Can't go to back to the US because of COVID restrictions >He's just totally fucked until international travel opens back up (and even then he has to burn some leave and could still fail the test) >"Damn bro that sucks real bad" With that said, I didn't get my driver's license until I was almost 19 because my parents kinda sucked, and my friends were even bigger losers than I was. So I can see how someone could be stuck in a shitty situation and be unable to get their license before joining, after which they should be able to find some bros to help them learn to drive. Probably get stuck as the designated driver for a few months as a form of payment lol
>>63950554I enlisted shortly after getting my driver's license with minimal proficiency. I really first learned to drive well in Ramstein. They had me on trucks, deicers and forklifts. Then I got my first car for a good price from a guy that was strapped for cash. I took that thing up to Prague. Two life lessons for cars: never buy something that has had aftermarket work done to it, it's going to be done like shit. And never buy a Nissan they have the worst transmissions around. Its a miracle mine didn't die on me and it had overheating problems which was normal for a Nissan.
I also made that walk at least for a year before I got my car but it wasn't bad.
>>63949819None. They shoved me into operational ELINT rather than tech ELINT which is where the money is made, but I was fine with that because I was gonna be doing what I wanted to do. Help protect our assets rather than look at the same data packet for a month and change to figure out what new mode the Russians added to their radar. Instead what happened was them shuffling me into 6 different positions, overworking and stretching me and my coworkers 4 different ways, 12+ hour night shifts, not being able to do what I picked that AFSC to do because they decided to move over to fusion cells where everyone does everything and I got shoved on a team where my AFSC was borderline useless and had to figure something else out to contribute because i went from live missions with sensors to a goddamn webpage on a mission-set where there was no goddamn ELINT, and depression so bad I nearly blew my brains out enough times to be forced by my commander to go to Mental health and get 100% P&T retirement without trying or fighting for it. Gonna be real, can't recommend it. It's a 50/50 you get shoved into 1N2C school instead and dont do shit with ELINT but instead do COMINT, and once you get through tech school and you learn your duty station you're fucked if you get shoved into an OP-ELINT role like a DCGS. No dreamsheet pick is gonna save you from being stuck in that system, ans they tend to burn through motivated airmen like they're nothing. But who knows, maybe things have changed in the year and a half since I've been inside of one. Not likely, but a man can hope.
I live in Oregon and am looking into joining a couple Reserve/Guard units. The goal is to do something mildly cool and have access to opportunities i wouldn't as a civilian. There is a Coast Guard reserve PSU in Washington and a 19th SF Support unit in Utah that both have jobs Id be interested in. (ME in the CG, or 35N or other 35 series in SF support).
Oregon does have some somewhat interesting units for the Army/Air guard, and CG, but those two above in particular seem cool
1. Will I grow to hate having to travel that far for drill? I don't mind driving much but wonder if other anons have experience here. Utah Guard SF reimburses travel for 35 series
2. Opinions on CG Reserve vs Guard SF support?
3. USERRA covers enlistment if I understand it correctly yes?
4. Should I abandon all of this and Larp instead
>>63950932You already have more brain cells and critical thinking than any servicemember you will encounter. So any decision you make will turn out well. Good luck.
Food for thought, consider the blue guard ie non-PSU cg reserves if you want to train but also do a real mission while drilling. If you are a reserve BM/MK instead of an ME you can still do all the boarding team LE quals but also general boat driving or fixing and thus fill in any reserve billet or orders anywhere in the country that has a small boat station. Whereas PSUs train but don't "do" anything since it is peacetime so you would still be larping.
Wat is your current job. Userra covers up to 5 years initial service period so another option is, you could do an entire enlistment or commissioned tour (t. did) to get all the trainings and travel itch out of your system while your job is protected. Especially if you see a path that doesn't exist in the reserves/NG.
>4. Should I abandon all of this and Larp insteadRationally, yes, except you will paralyze yourself with what-if's so better to rip the bandaid off sooner. t. did and did

Holy shit is it true that I actually get my own room after boot camp or is this just a meme? I thought I was going to be sharing space with like 25 smelly retards?
Also how much college credit can I get in the air force? I really have no social life so I was planning to take as much shit as humanly possible so I only have to do like a year of college after I get out and then re-enlist with my degree. Google makes it seem like I just take actual classes in my off time but I heard from a guy there's certain stuff in the AF itself that counts as a college credit.
>>63955413>my own room after boot campAfter BMT you go to tech school and will have a dorm with a roommate. Well actually I only had a roommate for two days out of my six months there lol that shit was awesome, but that's not typical, I got lucky. Also I heard DLI does things differently but I don't know how that works.
When you finish your training pipeline and get to your operational base you will find several different housing situations, mostly dorms, with little way to influence which one you get (cross your fingers). Here are the categories I can think of at the moment:
>THE FUCKING JACKPOT: The dorms are totally full and your first sergeant thinks you look responsible so they immediately give you BAH and two weeks to find an apartment or something.
>Lucky: Your own decently-sized room with a walk-in closet and your own bathroom. (https://www.reddit.com/r/malelivingspace/comments/1gzc3xo)
(I've heard rumors that these sometimes come with their own kitchen, but I have never seen proof of this)
>Based: The quads. Your own small room with a small closet and your own small bathroom. Four of these small rooms are connected to a small (cozy) central shared living area with a kitchen and laundry and shit. You and the boys will get drunk in this living area many times.
>Pretty cool: Your own room connected to a bathroom and kitchen you share with another room.
>Average: Same as the above but without the kitchen.
>Bad: Same as the above but the rooms are small.
>Very unlucky: Two Airmen to a room (there was some clusterfuck at Cannon AFB that resulted in a few months of this, but that's very much not typical).
>The anti-jackpot: You get stationed on an Army base and have to share your BARRACKS room with another dude until you're like E-5. You have my sympathy.
>>63955687>After BMT you go to tech school and will have a dorm with a roommateI figured tech school was part of what most people considered boot camp except it sucks marginally less.
>>63955687>>THE FUCKING JACKPOT: >The dorms are totally full and your first sergeant thinks you look responsible so they immediately give you BAH and two weeks to find an apartment or something. >Graduate BMT (which gives 4 college credits for physical education lol) >Graduate tech school (which also gives college credits) >Get to your operational base >Upgrade to 5-level in your AFSC >Go to the education center and ask them a million questions (TAKE NOTES) >Look at your CCAF degree requirements >Determine what CLEPs and DSSTs (see info in OP) you need to take to complete your CCAF degree >(Also I heard Sophia and study.com are good but I've never used them) >This is also a good resource: http://www.free-clep-prep.com/index.html >Go to your local community college or on-base testing center or fire up your webcam to CLEP and DSST your way through your CCAF degree >Once you get all the credits you need, ask the education office to make sure CCAF actually submits you for graduation >Look into the AU-ABC program (https://www.airuniversity.af.edu/CCAF/Article-Display/Article/1819887), the gist of it being these schools will accept all 60 credits (UoA goes up to 75) from your CCAF degree >Sign up for Pell Grant >Use tuition assistance to pay for whatever school you picked >Pocket the Pell Grant (though you may have to use it for the next semester) >You are now being paid (pic related) to do school and you haven't even touched your GI Bill Finishing a bachelor's degree in a four-year contract is realistic but also highly situational.

I've been working toward joining the Marine Corps but my case is complicated as fuck. Dropped out of high school two years ago, finishing my GED right now, planning to knock out 15 college credits so I can qualify as Tier 1. Also working on my fitness every day. So far, so good.
But here's the problem:
I've got a suicide by cop attempt from a few years back, and I hospitalized, spent a little time in the psych ward. I've also taken antidepressants (stopped years ago), and I may or may not got a autism diagnosis.
Despite all that, my recruiter hasn't dropped me. He said he'd help me write the personal statement for the waiver and told me to just keep working.
I'm doing everything I can, getting fit, staying clean, getting my GED, getting college credits, lining up my documents. But I'm starting to wonder, is this even worth it? Like is there even a real chance I get through MEPS and get a waiver approved with THIS kind of history? Or am I just grinding for a wall?
Would appreciate honest answers from anyone who's seen waiver cases like this go through (or get denied).

Im 1C8X3 in the air force half way through training. From what I hear there are a few paths for me to take
-do my 4 years and work for the faa or any other company
-get very lucky get chosen to go officer and do 20 years
-do 20 years as enlisted and make half as much with more work
-transfer into the army as a warrent officer and retire after 20
