We closed down two mountain OPs, and spent almost the entire deployment patrolling up and down highway 1 finding weapons caches and training ANA/ANP. Nothing ever happened to us except for a few IEDs an EFP and later, a green on blue attack. But none of that qualified for a CIB.

I was never there. I found the plaque in my grandpas stuff. I’ll ask my dad if he knows any more about it. My Grandpa talked about it once when I was little. Just about the cold and how your body makes heat and you have to trap it. He said he kept one of the Navy jackets with the fur. When I was little he would also talk to the people at the station in Antarctica on HF radio. He had a big antenna you’d have to crank up in the sky first. He was out of the Navy by then. This was M.A.R.S. radio personal traffic for the people there. In 1970 he was still in the Navy though so I’ll ask if we know any more about it.

And if that's enough to keep you away then yeah you should keep away. It really is what you decide to make of it though, at least in my career.

And obviously I can't speak to the chairforce but my expirience with them is that I spent 4 months in Spain and my childhood best friend who went AF while I went navy happened to be stationed there two weeks before I pulled in and I spent a lot of time with him on the air side of the base. It was almost entirely airmen crying that their life was hard because they had to stay on base for one 12 hour shift a month and play pool, vidya, and grill steaks. My friend actually had his hair grown out and a beard because they only called him in once a month, and that dude was active duty/forward deployed.

Turned an ass-chewing from a Corporal into a shouting match on a Friday. Platoon commander was on OOD on Saturday, caught me smoking on the catwalk and drinking underage. Saying "yup" instead of "yes sir" didn't help. Live and learn, rah.

Yeah, I was kind of a retard back then. Lost count of the Page 11s I got. I'd rather have been caught doing that than the immediately OTH/BCD tier shit, though.
I didn't really grow up until I was almost out.

Because its fun and looks cool. I was 5 years in a euro force and left with no cool colourfull stuff on my uniform except my rank. Just military hospital stuff I guess, not much “action”. Did meet a lot of exchange officers though.
