Realistically, most any .30 cal cartridge and above would be pretty effective in either getting it to fuck off or cause serious wounds. Any African big game calibers could probably drop it in one or two shots, especially if you hit the head, the chest cavity, or the pelvis.

WM Bell was able to drop hundreds of elephants right where they stood with military surplus 6mm and 7mm rifles using standard ammunition.
Obviously he was an incredible marksman and world class autist, but still, he made the brain shot with normal rifles.

Could a very large male African bush elephant hold its own against a T-Rex? The dinosaur is actually heavier but the elephant has such a neat tank built compared to the more limber bipedal frame. If the elephant can ram the rex he might be able to crush its ribs or topple him and then it's stomping time.

A very large bull elephant might stand a chance, but honestly my money would be on the Tyrannosaurus. Average sizes for adult Tyrannosaurs seem to be pretty well in-excess for the average sizes of elephants. Elephant tusks aren't really in a good position for use as weapons, and an elephant would have no experience with a predator larger and stronger than it while a Tyrannosaur habitually went after prey as large as itself. I think given some of the bite force calculations, if a Tyrannosaur got a bite in, it would be all over.

NTA. I read a bit about WM Bell. He did make some impressive headshots on elephants in motion, from being their shoulders. Even if the brain is as large as the skull, a shot like this is impressive.

If you put a bullet anywhere close to a T Rex's brain the bone fragments will kill it instantly.
Bell with a simple .275 against the thick skull of an elephant was able to penetrate the bone and kill the animal where it stood. He shot the thinnest part of the skull usually, but still, penetration depth with a caliber most hunters wouldn't consider was more than sufficient.

A more powerful single shot rifle, or an automatic rifle, loaded with appropriate ammunition, is going to rip straight through a T Rex skull and stop it before it reaches the hunter at any reasonable distance.

Bull elephant vs T Rex massively favors the elephant because the made for charging herbivore would crumple the narrow, long carnivore with the first charge, and would be able to turn faster.

The T Rex's tail mass isn't adding combat strength.

I think you're seriously overestimating the willingness of a bull elephant to charge a carnivore significantly larger than it and also significantly underestimating the strength and agility of a Tyrannosaur's legs. There have been studies on this topic, their legs were massive and powerful, but also easy for it to turn on. Yes a full on charge with a lot of space to build up would potentially be devastating, but I think the elephant is just as likely to turn and run, and if it's a bluff charge, it's not going to get another chance. Tyrannosaurs hunted prey that was larger than elephants for a living, but there's no elephant ever that has fought something the size of a large adult Tyrannosaurus.

A .50 BMG rifle, with a round designed for penetrating heavily armored targets, is likely the smallest caliber that could reliably take down a T-Rex with a single shot, assuming good shot placement. Stronger rounds like the .577 Tyrannosaur would also be effective.

T. rex feeding impressions have been found on many of these btw. Im sure occasionally an elephant would come out on top if you ran it a bunch of times but the idea that a T. rex wouldn't be able to handle a maneuverable charging horned prey animal is just silly on its head.

a couple other anons have mentioned this, but T. rex killed and ate Triceratops, Edmontosaurus, and possibly Alamosaurus, which were all substantially larger than a bull elephant. Elephants have also never encountered a predatory animal larger than them. A bull elephant would have no idea what it was looking at with a T. rex, while it would be just another day for the Tyrannosaur.

are there really retards who believe stuff like this? 9mm is a great round, but it absolutely wont kill anything living, not with ease at least. larger animals like bears and moose have dense bones, large amounts of muscle and fat, and thick skin, all of these factors lead to a these animals being able to absorb most shots with smaller calibers. now sure if you hit it in its vitals you can probably kill it but A: if your close enough to make that shot your probably already dead and B: I doubt your very knowledgeable about dino anatomy. I'd recommend a .44 mag minimum and even than I think your a tard if you think anything short of a rifle round would be appropriate.

it's so fascinating looking at how different, massive beasts evolved throughout the history of the earth. Even if you were to only find a herbivore with huge defensive horns, it makes one wonder what kinds of beasts those horns evolved to combat.

No, I'm simply saying we need to be realistic about shot placement. the margin of error to kill a T-Rex with 9mm is unacceptably small. you don't need to vaporize it but Id want around that could probably do enough truma in a head or chest shot to slow down and kill it without having to get the perfect shot that your not gonna hit while getting charged by a T-Rex.
