/k/ art thread
greetings anons, I know there was at least a few of you posting in the last one of these
posting progress I've made so far on the finalised drawing before I get lost in the Tarkov wipe in a few hours
have to say there's something very soothing about filling in all the detail via shading on something like a gun, less worried about getting an accurate form like with a human body, lot easier to grasp the proportions and limits of motion with an inanimate object

Anyone know where I can find reference art/settei for this tank?

You have drawn the ejection port too high. Note that the bolt needs to line up with the barrel and the stock tube.

There was a time in the late 90s, early 00s that Dick Kramer had a stranglehold on the gun art market.
> want to introduce a new rifle
> or pistol
> or knife
> or flashlight
> or whatever
You went to Dick Kramer and for the right price he'd pencil your gear into the art you wanted.
This was a dark time for gun art. It was the era of flames and diamond plate.

If it helps any, I've heard from some people who specialize in gun art that it's actually fairly common practice to pose a gun in 3d modeling software, trace it, and then draw the person around the gun

Yeah. Surefire, back in the P60 days, right before they got LED religion, had a bunch of Dick Kramer art. It would be a PD entry team with MP5's and Surefire fore ends.

NTA(s) but I absolutely do that, either with my own gun for reference or a very good reasonable res pic for reference. It doesn't need to be 100% the same setup you want, just close enough. I'd say you should do the same for things like cars, textured items (ie. woven basket), and animals, too. Just too much detail and distance ratios/realistic placements to remember if you're going for near-realism otherwise. It doesn't have to be a 100% match, but using perspective tool and creative editing to get your desired reference helps a lot just having something close.

Ideally you'd do it with pencil and be able to erase and fix before finalizing/moving on from the sketch. You could "redo" it by tracing the original using a backlit tracing box on a new sheet. Hopefully your paper is thin enough for the light to come through.
Anonymous No.63968439 >>63970093
>>63968415
Oh, for reference tracing? I thought you meant fixing a fuckup. You'd do what the rest of us did at some point; either trace physical photo w/ tracing box or buy a really crap $15 monitor used and abuse it by tracing whatever pic you display on it right on the screen (careful with pressure!). Or use an overhead projector with thin printed pages. Or camera obscura if you can make it work (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camera_obscura). Or there's that fancy hologram projector thing that kinda works (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uBpMtURTfs).

Anonymous No.63971205
>>63970093
Thrift stores used to be the shit for that but goodwill sucks cock now, so try small local ones. Maybe re-store; they used to have monitors rarely. Or a college surplus store (often on campus; have to google search your local ones). With 1440p monitors being like $120 these days, though, that's also an option. Though that also means they're available secondhand if you look hard enough. Also be aware of tracing paper which you can get at Michaels (RIP AC Moore).

Technique question: say you have a digitally generated camo pattern and you want to "wrap" it to the fabric and perspective of a scene (also digital). Is there a less retarded way to go about this than PS warp tool? Is redrawing by hand the usual way that illustrators do complex fabric patterns?

it was an actual technique in the '70s-80s to wrap your finger around the front of the trigger guard, so I assume that's where the GitS concept artists got their inspiration, there's a bunch of S&W pistols with trigger guards designed to accommodate that
